1997 PPG Cart World Series - Debuted the all-new, American-made Swift chassis in his seventh season with Newman Haas Racing driving the No. 6 Kmart/Texaco/ Havoline Swift 007.i-Ford/Cosworth XD. He had a fantastic start to the season by winning at Homestead scoring podium finishes at Detroit (2nd), Nazareth (2nd), Milwaukee (2nd) and Australia (3rd). Unfortunately, he closed the season by not scoring any points in four consecutive events. He finished eighth in the PPG Cup championship with 108 points. This marked only the second time since 1986 that he has finished lower than fourth.
1996 PPG Indy Car World Series (Sixth season at N/H) - Became the greatest winning,active Indy car driver after the second win (of five total) during the season. Scored a season-high five victories en route to his fifth runner-up finish in the PPG Cup race. Was only 14 points behind series leader Jimmy Vasser heading into the season final despite only finishing 10 of the 16 races after various problems took him out of six events. Races wins during his sixth season with Newman/Haas Racing included Nazareth, Milwaukee, Detroit, Road America and Vancouver. Was second in most laps led category in '96 with 281. Remained the highest ranking current Indy car driver in "Poles Won" category with 30 (second place Rahal has 18) as well as the "Most Laps Led" category with 5219 laps (second place Rahal has 2968 laps). Season highest qualifying position was an outside pole position in Vancouver. Voted Second Quarter Driver of the Year.
1995 PPG Indy Car World Series (Fifth season at N/H) - Returned to Newman/Haas Racing. Won the Toronto event for the fifth time and led more races (12) than any other driver. Was ranked first in most laps led category with 478, 198 more laps that PPG Cup Champion Jacques Villeneuve. Scored three pole positions (Miami, Surfers Paradise and Long Beach). Scored 7 top-5 finishes and 10 top-10 finishes. Scored a top-10 finish in every race that he completed. Finished fourth in the PPG Cup with 123 points.
1994 PPG Indy Car World Series - Drove for Chip Ganassi Racing in his last season to compete against his father, Mario. Reclaimed his dominance in the series by winning in Australia, his first race back in an Indy car following his Formula One stint. The Australia win also marked the first win for the Reynard chassis and Chip Ganassi. Finished sixth at Indy. Won at Toronto. Scored five other top-five finishes and finished fourth in the standings behind the three season-dominating Penske's.
1993 Formula One World Championship - Drove for the McLaren Formula One Team as a teammate of the late Ayrton Senna. Faced the challenge of learning a new chassis, new race tracks and new qualifying format with little test time. Scored seven points in 13 starts. Highlight of the season was a third place finish in the Italian Grand Prix. Also collected a fifth place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix and a sixth at the French Grand Prix. Announced his return to Indy Car racing at his hometown race at Nazareth in September.
1992 PPG Indy Car World Series (Fourth season at N/H) - Team switched to Ford/Cosworth engines from the dominant Chevrolet engine. Finished runner-up in PPG Cup to Bobby Rahal in the second-closest margin in Indy Car history, a mere four points (196-192). Won five races and scored seven poles. Led 1136 of 2110 laps, nearly 54 percent of all laps raced. Announced in August that he would be driving for the McLaren Team in Formula One in 1993. Voted a member of the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association 1992 All American Team.
1991 Champion - PPG Indy Car World Series (Third season at N/H) - Won Indy car-record eight races, eight poles and special event Marlboro Challenge to score first PPG Cup. Earned record number of points under modern (1983) system. First driver to win the Marlboro Challenge twice, first to win from the pole and first to win the PPG Cup in the same season. Topped Indy Car racing's first ever all-Andretti victory podium ahead of cousin, John, and father, Mario, at Milwaukee. Won championship in same year as younger brother Jeff, won Rookie of the Year title. Won eight poles and finished on the podium 11 times. Named Driver of the Year by a national panel of journalists. Set an Indy car earnings record of $2,400,000 in a single season.
Formula One World Championship - Signed testing agreement with McLaren International Ltd. Had first test in a Formula One (F1) car in Portugal. Was only able to complete four laps due to rained out test. Had another F1 test later in the year at Magny-Cours which was also in the rain. Did approximately 25 laps.
1990 PPG Indy Car World Series (Second season at N/H) - Five-time winner, scoring four poles to finish runner-up in PPG Cup. With Detroit win, his first of the season, Andretti became the first driver since father, Mario, (August'87) to lead every lap of a race. Finished one-two with father in Mid-Ohio. Led more than 25 percent of all laps raced. When brother Jeff made his Indy car debut in Milwaukee, it marked the first time a father competed against two sons in an event. Made 11 top-10 finishes and led more times (31) than any other driver.
1989 PPG Indy Car World Series (First season at N/H) - First year as part of history-making father-son team and first year at Newman/Haas. Won at Toronto and the Michigan 500. Scored poles at Detroit and Cleveland. Finished third in PPG Cup standings.
International Motor Sports Association - Competed in the GTP-class of the 24 Hours of Daytona in a "Family Feud" when Mario, Michael and brother Jeff, competed against the Unsers (Al Sr. Al Jr. And Robby) in the endurance event. Started ninth and did not finish (16th) due to brake failure.
1988 PPG Indy Car World Series - In final season with Kraco, produced seven top-five finishes and a victory (the only one for a Cosworth engine) at the second Marlboro Challenge of Miami. With Cosworth engine, was the only driver besides Bobby Rahal (Judd) to break Chevy domination. Won sole non-Chevrolet pole of the season at Milwaukee. In November, announced agreement to race with father at Newman/Haas for 1989, first father-son combo in racing, gaining dominant Chevrolet engine in deal. 24 HOURS OF LEMANS - Competed in the endurance event with father, Mario, and cousin, John, in a factory Porsche. Qualified third, lost a cylinder while in the lead and finished sixth.
1987 PPG Indy Car World Series - Repeated as PPG Cup runner-up to Bobby Rahal despite winning series-high four races and two poles. Earned first 500-mile victory at Michigan and won the inaugural event in hometown of Nazareth, Pa., both from the pole. Totalled nine top-five finishes in sixth season with Kraco. INTERNATIONAL RACE OF CHAMPIONS (iroc) - Invited to participate in the invitational event against 11 other elite drivers, including his father. Finished seventh in the series. INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SPORTS ASSOCIATION - Competed in the Mid-Ohio race with cousin John in a Corvette GTP for Hendrick Racing. Started third and finished sixth. Also competed at Miami with Jim Crawford in a Conti racing-prepared March Hawk-Buick GTP. Qualified second but finished 17th due to mechanical problems. GROUP A - Drove an Alfa in the Monza, Italy event.
1986 PPG Indy Car World Series - Won his first three Indy car races and finished second in the PPG Cup standings while driving for Kraco. Championship wasn't decided until the last race when ultimate champion Rahal finished 10 places in front of Andretti. Won first three pole positions of his career and topped all drivers with 699 laps led (of 2434). First career win was at Long Beach, first career pole at Milwaukee. Lost by 0.07 seconds to father, Mario, on Father's Day in Portland, then the closest margin of PPG Cup victory to date. Scored the first father/son front row in Indy car racing at Phoenix.
