  49. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
  50. to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to 
  51. the operating system how the chipset components will be 
  52. configured.  This is needed for the proper functioning of
  53. the following features:
  54.  
  55.    - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
  56.    - AGP Support
  57.    - IDE/ATA33/ATA66 Storage Support
  58.    - USB Support
  59.    - Identification of Intel Chipset Components in 
  60.      Device Manager
  61.

  63. * 2.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 
  64. ************************************************************
  65. 1.  The software included with this distribution package is 
  66.     designed to operate with the following chipset 
  67.     configurations:
  68.  
  69.           Intel(R) 810  Chipset

  99. To verify which operating system has been installed onto 
  100. the target system, follow the steps below:
  101.  
  102.     a.  Click on Start.
  103.     b.  Select Settings.
  104.     c.  Select Control Panel.
  105.     d.  Double-click on the System icon.
  106.     e.  Click on the General system properties tab.
  107.     f.  Verify which OS has been installed by reading
  108.         the System information.
  109.                               
  110. 3.  The software should be installed on systems with at
  111.     least 32 MB of system memory.
  112.  
  113. 4.  There should be sufficient hard disk space in the <TEMP>
  114.     directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) of the system on
  115.     which this software is installed.
  116.  
  117. Please check with your system provider to determine which 
  118. operating system and Intel chipset are used in your system.  
  119.

  121. * 3.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE 
  122. ************************************************************
  123. This software can be installed in two modes: Interactive or 
  124. Silent.  The Interactive Mode requires user input during
  125. installation; the Silent Mode does not.
  126.  
  127. Additionally, this software offers a set of command line
  128. flag options that enable extended installation functionality.
  129. The command line flags are not case-sensitive.  See Section 
  130. 3C for detailed descriptions of these flags.
  131.  
  132. Important Note:
  133. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is 
  134. distributed in two formats -- self extracting .EXE files
  135. (INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed .ZIP files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP).  
  136. Depending on which distribution format is being executed, 
  137. the command-line syntax may differ.  See Section 3C for more
  138. details.
  139.  
  140.  
  141. ************************************************************
  142. * 3A.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN INTERACTIVE MODE
  143. ************************************************************
  144. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  The operating system 
  145.     must be fully installed and running on the system before
  146.     running this software.
  147.  
  148. 2.  Close any running applications.  Otherwise, you may
  149.     experience difficulties.
  150.  
  151. 3.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  152.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE
  153.        Compressed .ZIP distribution     : SETUP.EXE
  154.  
  155. 4.  You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement.  
  156.     If you do not agree, the Installer will exit before 
  157.     extracting any files.
  158.     
  159. 5.  Follow the on-screen instructions and use the default
  160.     settings to complete the setup, once the operating
  161.     system has rebooted.
  162.  
  163. 6.  This completes the installation of the Intel(R) Chipset 
  164.     Software Installation Utility.

  168. * 3B.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN SILENT MODE
  169. ************************************************************
  170. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  The operating system 
  171.     must be fully installed and running on the system before 
  172.     running this software.
  173.  
  174. 2.  Close any running applications.  Otherwise, you may 
  175.     experience difficulties.
  176.  
  177. 3.  Run the InstallShield installation program:
  178.     For silent install with auto-reboot:
  179.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -b -s
  180.        Compressed .ZIP distribution     : SETUP.EXE -b -s
  181.     - OR -
  182.     For silent install without auto-reboot:
  183.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -s
  184.        Compressed .ZIP distribution     : SETUP.EXE -s

  186. 4.  The utility will perform the necessary updates and record
  187.     the installation status in the following system registry 
  188.     key:
  189.         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\INFInst
  190.  
  191. 5.  If the utility was invoked with the "-b" flag, the 
  192.     system will automatically reboot if the update was
  193.     successful.
  194.  
  195.     NOTE:  The system MUST be rebooted for all device updates
  196.            to take effect.
  197.  
  198. 6.  To determine whether the install was successful, verify 
  199.     the 'install' value in the registry key specified in Step 5.
  200.  
  201.     The following table describes the various parameter values:

  221. * 3C.  LIST OF AVAILABLE COMMAND LINE FLAG OPTIONS
  222. ************************************************************
  223. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility supports  
  224. several command line flags for various installation options. 
  225. All command line flags and parameters must be separated by a 
  226. space, except for the language code after the '-L' flag.
  227.  
  228. Due to the different distribution formats available for the
  229. Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility, the command
  230. line flag syntax may vary:
  231.  
  232. 1. Self-Extracting .EXE Distribution:
  233.       When installing this software using the .EXE distribution,
  234.       an extra '-A' must be appended to the INFINST_xxx.EXE 
  235.       program call (i.e. INFINST_ENU.EXE -A) in order to 
  236.       successfully pass command line parameters.  The extra 
  237.       '-A' flag for the self-extracting .EXE package
  238.       is DIFFERENT from the '-A' command line flag option 
  239.       described below.  
  240.  
  241.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  242.                described below, the installation program 
  243.                should be invoked as follows:  
  244.           
  245.                INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A (optional -P)
  246.  
  247. 2. Compressed .ZIP Distribution:
  248.       When installing this software using the .ZIP distribution,
  249.       there is no need to append any extra flags to the SETUP.EXE 
  250.       program call in order to pass command line flags.
  251.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  252.                described below, the installation program 
  253.                should be invoked as follows:  
  254.                         
  255.                SETUP.EXE -A (optional -P)
  256.  
  257. Below is a list of all the available command line flags that
  258. may be used with the program call.  Note that the '-L' and 
  259. the '-S' flags MUST be specified at the end of the command line 
  260. flag list.
  261.  
  262. Flag            Description
  263. ----            -----------
  264. -?              Help flag.  Displays the list of available command line
  265.                 flags.  This parameter works in the Interactive mode only.  
  266. -A              Extracts INF files, README.TXT, RELNOTES.TXT, and 
  267.                 instructions for OEM preload (PRELOAD.TXT) to either 
  268.                 "C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst" or the <Installation Path> directory 
  269.                 specified using the '-P' flag.  The software will NOT
  270.                 install these INF files to the system.  This flag can 
  271.                 be combined only with the '-P' flag option.  All other 
  272.                 options will be ignored if the '-A' flag is specified. 
  273.                 This parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive 
  274.                 mode.
  275.  
  276. -B              Automatically reboots the system after installation.  
  277.                 This flag is ignored if '-A' flag is specified.  This 
  278.                 parameter works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode.
  279.  
  280. -L<LangCode>    Forces the InstallShield user interface to 
  281.                 display the specified language during setup.  
  282.                 Note that there should be NO spaces between '-L' 
  283.                 and the 4-digit language code (see below).  This 
  284.                 flag and the '-S' flag must be placed at the end 
  285.                 of the command line flag list.  This parameter works 
  286.                 in Interactive mode only.
  287.  
  288. -P <Installation Path>   
  289.                 Specifies the HDD location to which the INF program
  290.                 files are copied.  If this flag is not specified 
  291.                 at the command line, the <Installation Path> 
  292.                 directory is by default assumed to be:
  293.                 
  294.                    C:\Program Files\Intel\INFInst
  295.                 
  296.                 If this flag is used without the
  297.                 '-A' option, only README.TXT and RELNOTES.TXT will
  298.                 be copied to <Installation Path>.  The directory name can 
  299.                 include spaces.  In this case, however, a pair of double
  300.                 quotes (") must enclose the directory name.  This parameter 
  301.                 works in either Silent mode or Interactive mode.
  302.  
  303. -S              Runs the Installer in silent mode.  No user interface
  304.                 is displayed.   This flag and the '-L' flag
  305.                 must be placed at the end of the command line
  306.                 flag list.

  338. Run Device Manager to verify the correct installation and
  339. usage of the INF files.

  343.    1.  Click on Start.
  344.    2.  Select Settings.
  345.    3.  Select Control Panel.
  346.    4.  Double-click on System icon.
  347.    5.  Click on Device Manager tab.
  348.    6.  Click on View Devices by Connection button.
  349.    7.  Click on Plug and Play BIOS, or 
  350.        Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS.
  351.    8.  Click on PCI bus.

  353. For Windows 2000:

  355.    1.  Click on Start.

  576. * 7.  TROUBLESHOOTING
  577. ************************************************************
  578. It is assumed that the system requirements in Section 2 
  579. above have been satisfied.
  580.  
  581. Issue:      System locks up during Device Manager Remove or 
  582.             during restart.
  583.  
  584. Solution:   System lockup can occur during Restart as a 
  585.             result of several possible system issues.  In 
  586.             the event of system lockup, restart the machine 
  587.             and view Device Manager.  If devices are listed 
  588.             properly and the system experiences no further 
  589.             problems, then the .INF file restore process was
