I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but are there any
on-line sources for tracking programs? Specifically, I enjoy using RS-12,
and would like to have a program on my PC that would allow me to track the
bird. ANY help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Scott
N7LRA.

I am using the A&A NOAA wefax decoder feeding the printer port with
JVFAX 7.0. The A&A has 8bits of output, but I have never been able to
get a standard printer port to accept data on the I/O pins. I have had
great succes using the 5 status inputs(for 2^5=32grey scale)on several
different pc/printer card combos (I have modifed an early "real IBM"
so that I get the full 8bits. and it is nice but it was a real pain to
do the mod).
To use an data output pin as an input pin is a bit tricky. Some older or
cheaper cards just do not handle incoming data very well. There are
about 3 different "style" cards, and each requires a slightly different
method to enable reading data. A friend has an add-on 8bit A>D converter
and he just about had to write a different IO for every different pc or
card. I have never been 100% sure that the JVFAX program can actually
read data using any and all cards. I have suspected that it works great
with some cards but not with any that I have tried.
In the early stages of "debuging" the A&A card I used a DB25 with LEDs
(for each data bit) to show that the "demodulator" was working properly.
Good luck and good viewing.

One cannot get the data from them so why wonder on their locations?

We are searching for a module or small board to provide real-time telemtry
transmissions from high-powered model rockets.
This unit would need to be:
a) Licensed or legitimately usable unlicensed in several countries,
b) Interfaceable to an altimeter/accelerometer CPU,
c) capable of transmissions to a range of 50K feet.
Any leads will be greatly appreciated.
BTW, we are not 'radio-knowledgeable' people, so if there is a more suitable
newsgroup to target, please let us know.
Thanks,

The Remote Image Group (RIG) do a pcb as well. Ask Peter Wakelin about it.

Actually, STSPlus does track multiple satellites (up to 32 at a time).
From the main menu, press [F10] [F3] then [F2] repeatedly until it shows
the "Both" or "Sats" setting for "Display TDRS and real time satellites."
Took me about 2 months until I found out about it. BTW, current ver is 9607.

Try SkyChart 2000. It will import nasa files and track zillions of
satellites. It will do track in realtime and plot the course. It comes
with a demo file that tracks all of the GPS's. It's shareware and findable
on line.

OK, and greetings. Trying to put together an automated SAT sattion.
Have had the DSP-93 for about 9 months now and trying to get things
going. Have the PACCOMM TNC and thought loading PSK and FSP modems
would be a lot easier than it seems to be.
Also, at least on my DX cluster @ 9600 - I seem to be getting much
better throughput on my MFJ/G3RUH combo then on the DSP-93 using the
FSK18 modem. I have the thing tuned for 1Vpp input so I think it is
tuned as well as possible. Using an ICOM 820H BTW.
Here's my question(s):
Should I get a DSP2232?
Will the TAPR TNC do a better job of Swapping modems and loading OBJs.
How does the 2232 compare to the DSP-93 or MFJ-G3RUH interms of
performance - don't want to shell out a grand and go backwards.
Thanks in advance for any advice or ideas you may have.

I found Traksat 2.8 very good. I think the AMSAT-NA site still has it. 2.8 is
the last version that works with an XT. A co-processor (about $10 at swap meet

makes it run pretty smooth. In fact I'll send him/her this co-processor I have
, I doubt
I'll be setting up any XTs soon.

I have set up a web page that links to verious areas on the internet. My
home page will allow you to print out a petition to send to your senators.
At this time I do not have the House of Representatives listed ... but we
can start withthe senate.
To give you a breif overview ... A study of Near Earth Objects was
proposed by several top NASA astronmers that would cost a mere $50 million
of NASA's $7 Billion dollar budget. This study would withint 10 years
track with relative assurance 95% of all the object that pose a threat to
Earth. With operating expenses of $10million per year after the initial
setup. This would also give us enough time to do something about a
potential threat. This project was rejected due to budget constraints.
You can help by writing and calling your congressional representatives and
telling them you want this funded. Please consider doing so as this would
be in all our best interests.

Me and a few of the local hams are putting together an Amateur Balloon
We are in the fist stages of equipment design and I'm the lucky (or is
that unlucky) one who gets to build the instrument package. For the
first flight we are going to use a Basic Stamp (I or II not sure yet)
to send telemetry and collect data from onboard sensors.
I have completed the temperature sensors and i am looking for a way to
determine the altitude of the balloon (low cost needed) I have heard
of a few chips or rather modules by motorola that do this. If anyone
can help we would be most greatful.

Yesterday (Saturday 07 APR) I tried to receive the AO-27 downlink
on 436.800 MHz, but didn't hear anything. I listened from 0900
local time to 1800 using a Radio Shack PRO-2006 scanner in FM
narrow mode. The receiver was programmed to search from
436.750-436.850 MHz in 5 KHz increments. The antenna was an
outdoor sloping dipole for 35 MHz (it works from 30-950 MHz).
Also, my squelch was set very low so a weak signal would break
squelch.
Any idea what the problem is?

This seems to be as good a place as any to ask this:
My brother gave me a three foot dish (just for the heck of it). Is anyone
receiving any shortwave stations broadcasting via satellite? If so, what
would I need, in addition to the dish, to receive these signals? I suppose
I'm limited to Ku-band, but that's fine.
I've been doing ham/shortwave for about 25 years, but this is new to me.
Thanks!

Shannon Lucid was on the radio Friday morning.
KD7MW in Shoreline, Wa. made a brief voice contact at 08:36 UTC April 12th.
There was more activity Sat morning around 07:38 UTC and 09:17 UTC on the
13th. There seemed to be problems with the MIR radio. Was transmitting
a continuous carrier with periodic packet bursts. Shannon finally came
on voice at 9:17 utc and was talking to N6LH about cables and resetting.

Sir,
It's still available. The IBM/DOS Broadcasting Radio Station Database
Program for Longwave, Mediumwave, and Shortwave. Over 4,000 records
included already. The program is completely read and write. Records
can be added or changed. Sorts in many different formats both on your
screen and printing.
If you would like a copy of the program, send your request to
"chuck@flinet.com". Please include your MAILING ADDRESS. For example,
your street number, city, state and zipcode. Also include your Email
address.
The program will be sent to you via Email probably within 24 hours if
not sooner. If you request the program and haven't received it in that
period, check back with me..
Remember to send your address. Requests without a mail address will no
longer be acknowledge to save time on the internet. In the past,
requests without an address were reminded with a message. Usually, the
reminder went unanswered anyway. If it was, the reply was sometimes
very rude.
This program is free! Everything works. It has many features and they
all work, not like shareware where some of the features work and others
don't.
You address will be kept confidential. I will be sending you a first
class letter later explaining another full featured Database program
available. It's very big!

Greetings,
The last version of Traksat that works on an XT is 3.03, I have it running
on an old XT i have.
The fastest satellite traking program I have seen on an XT is called
QUIKTRAK, but you have to enter all the Keps manually in the program.
Good listening!

Oh no, there's a function to import nasa-2Line elements!
Or use Instanttrack, buy it legally and you support AMSAT. It's nice, runs OK
on an XT.

It has been reported here earlier that the Mir operates on Moscow time.
They knock off about 2100z and get up about 0500z...

When selecting a satellite with WISP, I keep getting the next satellite
in the list that's programed in the Trackbox.
I have heard other instances of this, and I did not have the problem
until I upgraded my computer.
Anyone remember what causes this?

Hi Frank!
I don't know of a solution to your problem, I don't even know the
Trackbox!!! Thats why I'll ask you some qustions! ...hihi
I wonder if it's possible to get the trackbox in kit form, or is it sold
as a complete unit? If its possible with a kit, is also the circuit
diagram and the pcb layout known 'stuff'? I think I have seen an update
of the software on the net. I would like to build a trackbox (I like
building systems - not buing the complete), so any info from you would be
nice!

I presently use a homebrew 5/8 wave groundplane (featured in Radio Fun a
couple of years ago) at 30' for the uplink to RS-10, and a 10 meter
dipole at about 16' for the downlink. My rig is the Yaesu FT-290R Mk II,
a great inexpensive rig for a beginner satellite operator. The only
problems I have working the RS-10 bird, MIR and SAREX is that my schedule
never seems to coincide with theirs! However, I do have two verified
RS-10 contacts, an STS-57 SAREX QSL, and have been able to connect to
R0MIR on packet several times (unfortunately could not complete the QSO's
due to QRM - - darn the bad luck!). So, I would say all the elements of
my station are suitable for beginning satellite operation just like the
Handbook said.

The side window antenna was designed by Andy Bachler N9AB of the Motorola
Amateur Radio Club. While it's well suited for the shuttle application,
I wouldn't recommend it for anybody on the ground. Electrically it's
the equvialent of a quarter-wave whip sticking out of the shuttle's
window, but it's got about a zero db gain.
From the ground your better choices would be a beam antenna of some kind
(Yagi or Quad), with a J-Pole, Eggbeater, or other omni ground plane as a
backup.

Not exactly low cost, but certainly the jazziest method ....
Use a GPS receiver. It will give you an extremely accurate altitude,
latitude, and longitude. In fact you can purchase a combination mini
packet modem with a built-in GPS receiver which seems rather suited to
your application. As a bonus the packet capability will let you transmit
all of your telemetry while the balloon's in flight in a format which
anybody can read.

Joe,
I bought the Ic-820H to use for Satellite work and had a lot of problems with
the interfaces to control the radio's freq., mode, etc. The support from Icom
was not any help. I worked with it for 60 days and finally traded it in on a
new TS-790. I was up and running with full computer control of the radio,
antenna tracking, and Packet TNC in less than a day. I looked at the
FT-736R
but never tried it out. The TS-790 is the oldest of the group, but it does th
e
job as advertised.

The TNC was shut down w/ the xceiver 2/28/96 in preperation for the STS
docking. As reported elsewhere in this group, the xceiver has been fired
up, by one of the Yuris, and M/S Lucid given the MIC. Heard some OM's in
RR on the 143.625 Nite before last around 2:00am (edt), but nothing on
145.550.
BTW; My STS-76 MET clock is still ticking here, and it sez 27d:10h:42m:30s
as I type, so it's still early in Shannon's stay, Don't forget, Dr. Norm
admitted to being sowhat BORED after awhile......
Once the "honeymoon" is over, She'll be a regular...........stay tuned.

The TS-790A has some horrible defects that make it unsuitable for
satellite operation. The most brain dead feature is that the narrow
filters don't work in the sub-band receiver, but that's the one
you have to use when operating satellite because only the main
band unit transmits. Thus your SNR suffers severely unless all
you operate is SSB.
And like all other Kenwood VHF+ gear, it has absolutely horrible
thermal design. The PA modules get very hot. The 70cm module in
mine cooked out after only 30 days of operation (and Kenwood
took months to fix it). The replacement PA module was worse.
Instead of 18 amps current draw for 27 watts output (yeah it
didn't meet power output specs from the factory), the replacement
PA drew 22 amps for only 22 watts output. Then the 2m PA module
died. Same problem, thermal cookout opened metalization in the
module. I sawed that one open rather than send it back to the
factory again, and fixed it myself.
And then there's the brain dead user interface. To make sattrack
tuning work, you have to depress and *hold* the SAT button. That
makes tuning a two handed job. And if you release the SAT button,
you have to press it *twice* to get back into track tuning, useless.
I rigged up a mechanical clamp to keep the SAT button depressed
all the time.
I finally managed to unload it on a sucker (hi Brian), and got
a real radio, the FT-736R. It runs cool, the narrow filters
*work* for satellite, there's a for real rotary switch that
puts you in sattrack tuning and *leaves* you in sattrack tuning,
etc. In other words, it works right.
I know, I should have known better than to buy a Kenwood. I've
got enough experience with them to know that they are all terminally
brain dead. I just have to plead temporary insanity when I bought
yet another of their poorly designed pieces of crap. (Hope springs
eternal that they'll finally get *something* right on a VHF+ radio.
Their HF stuff isn't half bad.)

hello. i have recently builted up a new computer for myself. i ordered
a new botherboard/cpu and ordered the intel 100 mhz cpu chip to go in
the new mb they were out of the intel and sent me the amd 120 mhz chip
instead. What I want to know if anyone out there has an amd cpu chip
and if instant track runs ok with it. It does not on my system. I go
to the menu option number 2 to track a satilite with the map and text
on bottom. well the text info on the nbottom of the screen is all
garbled and not read able. I would like to hear from people who have
this cpu chip and run it to see if you have the same problem.

Anyone interested in satellite tracking might want to take a trip to:
http://www.netwide.net/logsat
It's the home page of LogSat Professional, a satellite tracking
program under Windows. The commercial version of the software is
advertised there, but you may download the demo version as well. The
site also carries fresh keps (updated daily) for about 700-900
satellites, available both as a zip file or in uncompressed format,
ready to be read by tracking programs. Also available are pseudo
Keplerian elements for the Moon, which will allow you to track it just
as if it was a normal artificial satellite. Of course there will also
be a few links to other interesting pages related to ham radio.

Finally heard Shannon Lucid, voice on 145.550 a couple nights ago.
Tried, but wasn't able to chat with her, this time... I have lestened
for her on every pass since, she hasn't uttered a word, at least not
while over NW Oregon. I even drove up to a hill west of here,
borrowed a friends repeater antenna on a great big tower and hooked up
my amplifier in hopes of making a voice cntct, but again, silence..
I don't know what their schedule is up there, however I do know that
they operate on Moscow time, making our pass/location fairly ideal in
that it's post supper time up there when they go over, seemingly a
good time for Shannon to play ham :) But still, contacts in these
parts (perhaps everywhere) are a rare catch indeed...
I REALLY miss having 'ol Doc Thaggard up there, he rarely missed a
night without getting on the 2m and making a zillion contacts, we had
about a dozen qso's in about 2 weeks time.
Perhaps Shannon will settle in and get a bit more sociable on the 2m
rig sometime soon, if not, those that do make a voice contact with her
should promptly have their tape of it bronzed, as it is a rare
occurance thus far.. Also, I have not heard a packet burst from MIR
in a real long time, is it broken??
73's all, and keep trying!! Nothing gets your adrenalin pumping more
than talking with space people <grin>

A repeater antenna? That probably won't work very well...
Usually a repeater will use some collinear array, and it radiates only
towards the horizon.
It is better to borrow the auto-tracking az/el steerable yagis from a
local packet satellite enthousiast. That will provide you with a
fullscale signal and a lot of ERP towards MIR.

Ahhh, wouldn't that be nice.... Actually, the antenna is mine
(2X4MAX) and is on loan to the repeater owner until his gets in and we
have nicer weather to put it on the tower. It's true that the high
passes of the MIR (45deg and above) are not so useful with the present
antenna setup, but for the one to 45 degree passes it's more than
sufficiant, a dozen QSO's with Dr. Thaggard on the MIR last year using
the same antenna is a testiment to that.. In the mean time I will
dream of anaz-ele circular polarized, 5400 rotor etc etc..

Apparently pricing is different in the USA.
In Europe, a TS-790 is much more expensive than a similar FT-736 setup.

HearSat is an Internet mailing list for discussion on the subject of
receiving radio signals from Earth-orbiting satellites. Some of these
signals may be received using very simple and inexpensive receivers.
Signal types range from recorded voice messages from the Russian
space station Mir, and live audio from the US Space Shuttle, to
packet data telemetry from amateur radio microsats. HearSat
subscribers include many radio hams and experts in earth orbiting
satellites, as well as beginners listening in for their first radio
contact from space.
Subscribe to hearsat-l by sending an e-mail to majordomo@grove.net
with any subject and the message (without the quotes) "subscribe
hearsat-l" in the body.
The HearSat website is located at www.grove.net/~hearsat.

According to Shannon, who I have talked to 3 times now, she normally
operates 05-0700z and the Russians, Yuri and Yuri usually operate when
over Russia. No particular day preference, just operate on a whim and/or
when they have time. The call sign is R0MIR, and frequency is 145.550
simplex. When it is not in use, it is turned off. They operate on Moscow
time zone.

She is running simplex. its just probably that a million guys are
calling her at the same time. I talked to her again last night at about
0530. Shes still real new to radio and hasnt learned to handle pileups
yet. With 5 more months to go, I bet she gets lots of practice.

Cool! wish I had it on tape. Just keep trying, she doesnt have a
fixed sked on when she operates. and you dont have to go portable. I use
a 3 el quad in my apartment. just be sure to have current keps in your
sat tracking program so you know when she is available and start calling
when AOS. other wise, just keep the radio on and with squelch on, say any
pass 04/08 z and see if she works someone. I noticed that the orbits are
slipping more to the south and west, so possibly soon we will only have a
small window in the evening. GOOD LUCK! Dan WA7TDZ.

[This is slightly off-topic; I apologize.]
I believe I'd read somewhere that it is possible to obtain from some U.S.
government agency a colorful and detailed poster/photo of one's local area
as seen from space (having given them the appropriate latitiude and longitude,
of course).
As I'd like to have something like this to decorate my shack,
can anyone tell me:
- is this still available?
- whom do I contact?
- how much (if anything) does it cost?
Please reply by email.
Thanks,
