Specifically, I enjoy using RS-12, and would like to have a program on my PC that would allow me to track the bird. ANY help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Scott N7LRA. The A&A has 8bits of output, but I have never been able to get a standard printer port to accept data on the I/O pins. I have had great succes using the 5 status inputs(for 2^5=32grey scale)on several different pc/printer card combos (I have modifed an early "real IBM" so that I get the full 8bits. and it is nice but it was a real pain to do the mod). To use an data output pin as an input pin is a bit tricky. Some older or cheaper cards just do not handle incoming data very well. There are about 3 different "style" cards, and each requires a slightly different method to enable reading data. A friend has an add-on 8bit A>D converter and he just about had to write a different IO for every different pc or card. I have never been 100% sure that the JVFAX program can actually read data using any and all cards. I have suspected that it works great with some cards but not with any that I have tried. In the early stages of "debuging" the A&A card I used a DB25 with LEDs (for each data bit) to show that the "demodulator" was working properly. Good luck and good viewing. Trying to put together an automated SAT sattion. Have had the DSP-93 for about 9 months now and trying to get things going. Have the PACCOMM TNC and thought loading PSK and FSP modems would be a lot easier than it seems to be. Also, at least on my DX cluster @ 9600 - I seem to be getting much better throughput on my MFJ/G3RUH combo then on the DSP-93 using the FSK18 modem. I have the thing tuned for 1Vpp input so I think it is tuned as well as possible. Using an ICOM 820H BTW. Here's my question(s): Should I get a DSP2232? Will the TAPR TNC do a better job of Swapping modems and loading OBJs. How does the 2232 compare to the DSP-93 or MFJ-G3RUH interms of performance - don't want to shell out a grand and go backwards. Thanks in advance for any advice or ideas you may have. 73 de N3FTU, Bob From amsoft@epix.net Tue Apr 09 16:54:52 1996 From: n7tcf@primenet.com Newsgroups: rec.radio.amateur.space Subject: Re: Satellite Tracking Program for XT Date: 7 Apr 1996 06:11:02 -0700 Message-ID: <4k8et6$s28@nnrp1.news.primenet.com> References: <31675328.4497@primenet.com> Reply-To: n7tcf@primenet.com I found Traksat 2.8 very good. My home page will allow you to print out a petition to send to your senators. At this time I do not have the House of Representatives listed ... but we can start withthe senate. To give you a breif overview ... A study of Near Earth Objects was proposed by several top NASA astronmers that would cost a mere $50 million of NASA's $7 Billion dollar budget. This study would withint 10 years track with relative assurance 95% of all the object that pose a threat to Earth. With operating expenses of $10million per year after the initial setup. This would also give us enough time to do something about a potential threat. This project was rejected due to budget constraints. You can help by writing and calling your congressional representatives and telling them you want this funded. Please consider doing so as this would be in all our best interests. The IBM/DOS Broadcasting Radio Station Database Program for Longwave, Mediumwave, and Shortwave. Over 4,000 records included already. The program is completely read and write. Records can be added or changed. Sorts in many different formats both on your screen and printing. If you would like a copy of the program, send your request to "chuck@flinet.com". Please include your MAILING ADDRESS. For example, your street number, city, state and zipcode. Also include your Email address. The program will be sent to you via Email probably within 24 hours if not sooner. If you request the program and haven't received it in that period, check back with me.. Remember to send your address. Requests without a mail address will no longer be acknowledge to save time on the internet. In the past, requests without an address were reminded with a message. Usually, the reminder went unanswered anyway. If it was, the reply was sometimes very rude. This program is free! Everything works. It has many features and they all work, not like shareware where some of the features work and others don't. You address will be kept confidential. My rig is the Yaesu FT-290R Mk II, a great inexpensive rig for a beginner satellite operator. The only problems I have working the RS-10 bird, MIR and SAREX is that my schedule never seems to coincide with theirs! However, I do have two verified RS-10 contacts, an STS-57 SAREX QSL, and have been able to connect to R0MIR on packet several times (unfortunately could not complete the QSO's due to QRM - - darn the bad luck!). So, I would say all the elements of my station are suitable for beginning satellite operation just like the Handbook said. The side window antenna was designed by Andy Bachler N9AB of the Motorola Amateur Radio Club. While it's well suited for the shuttle application, I wouldn't recommend it for anybody on the ground. Electrically it's the equvialent of a quarter-wave whip sticking out of the shuttle's window, but it's got about a zero db gain. From the ground your better choices would be a beam antenna of some kind (Yagi or Quad), with a J-Pole, Eggbeater, or other omni ground plane as a backup. The TS-790A has some horrible defects that make it unsuitable for satellite operation. The most brain dead feature is that the narrow filters don't work in the sub-band receiver, but that's the one you have to use when operating satellite because only the main band unit transmits. Thus your SNR suffers severely unless all you operate is SSB. And like all other Kenwood VHF+ gear, it has absolutely horrible thermal design. The PA modules get very hot. The 70cm module in mine cooked out after only 30 days of operation (and Kenwood took months to fix it). The replacement PA module was worse. Instead of 18 amps current draw for 27 watts output (yeah it didn't meet power output specs from the factory), the replacement PA drew 22 amps for only 22 watts output. Then the 2m PA module died. Same problem, thermal cookout opened metalization in the module. I sawed that one open rather than send it back to the factory again, and fixed it myself. And then there's the brain dead user interface. To make sattrack tuning work, you have to depress and *hold* the SAT button. That makes tuning a two handed job. And if you release the SAT button, you have to press it *twice* to get back into track tuning, useless. I rigged up a mechanical clamp to keep the SAT button depressed all the time. I finally managed to unload it on a sucker (hi Brian), and got a real radio, the FT-736R. It runs cool, the narrow filters *work* for satellite, there's a for real rotary switch that puts you in sattrack tuning and *leaves* you in sattrack tuning, etc. In other words, it works right. I know, I should have known better than to buy a Kenwood. I've got enough experience with them to know that they are all terminally brain dead. I just have to plead temporary insanity when I bought yet another of their poorly designed pieces of crap. (Hope springs eternal that they'll finally get *something* right on a VHF+ radio. Their HF stuff isn't half bad.) I even drove up to a hill west of here, borrowed a friends repeater antenna on a great big tower and hooked up my amplifier in hopes of making a voice cntct, but again, silence.. I don't know what their schedule is up there, however I do know that they operate on Moscow time, making our pass/location fairly ideal in that it's post supper time up there when they go over, seemingly a good time for Shannon to play ham :) But still, contacts in these parts (perhaps everywhere) are a rare catch indeed... I REALLY miss having 'ol Doc Thaggard up there, he rarely missed a night without getting on the 2m and making a zillion contacts, we had about a dozen qso's in about 2 weeks time. Perhaps Shannon will settle in and get a bit more sociable on the 2m rig sometime soon, if not, those that do make a voice contact with her should promptly have their tape of it bronzed, as it is a rare occurance thus far.. A repeater antenna? That probably won't work very well... Usually a repeater will use some collinear array, and it radiates only towards the horizon. It is better to borrow the auto-tracking az/el steerable yagis from a local packet satellite enthousiast. That will provide you with a fullscale signal and a lot of ERP towards MIR. Actually, the antenna is mine (2X4MAX) and is on loan to the repeater owner until his gets in and we have nicer weather to put it on the tower. It's true that the high passes of the MIR (45deg and above) are not so useful with the present antenna setup, but for the one to 45 degree passes it's more than sufficiant, a dozen QSO's with Dr. Thaggard on the MIR last year using the same antenna is a testiment to that.. No particular day preference, just operate on a whim and/or when they have time. The call sign is R0MIR, and frequency is 145.550 simplex. When it is not in use, it is turned off. They operate on Moscow time zone. Just keep trying, she doesnt have a fixed sked on when she operates. and you dont have to go portable. I use a 3 el quad in my apartment. just be sure to have current keps in your sat tracking program so you know when she is available and start calling when AOS. other wise, just keep the radio on and with squelch on, say any pass 04/08 z and see if she works someone. I noticed that the orbits are slipping more to the south and west, so possibly soon we will only have a small window in the evening. GOOD LUCK! Dan WA7TDZ.
