  16. MODEL: SMC-34
  17. SUBJECT: Distorted/muffled transmit audio
  18.  
  19. Symptom: Transmit audio from the SMC-34 sounds distorted or muffled 
  20. as compared with the audio provided by the transceivers own microphone.
  21.  
  22. Corrective Action:
  23.  
  24. Replace the front case of the microphone, add a cushion inside the 
  25. microphone well and change the plastic sheet inside the microphone well.

  35. Procedure:
  36.  
  37. 1. Remove the three small black Phillip's head screws from the rear of the 
  38.    speaker microphone.
  39.  
  40. 2. Carefully remove the back cover. The Lock Switch lever and the PTT lever 
  41.    can now be removed.
  42.  
  43. 3. Remove the volume control knob by pulling straight away from the case.
  44.  
  45. 4. Remove the two small black Phillip's head screws that secure the PC Board 
  46.    assembly to the front case of the microphone. You can now gently lift the 
  47.    PC Board assembly straight up and away from the front case.
  48.  
  49. 5. Remove the packing, screen, and sheet from the front case of the speaker 
  50.    microphone.
  51.  
  52. 6. Insert the cushion, sheet, screen and backing as shown in the accompanying 
  53.    illustrations.
  54.  
  55. 7. Reverse steps 1 - 4 to reassemble the unit. 
  56.  
  57. Note: Carefully remove the rubber gasket from the old front case and 
  58. position it in the new front case groove before replacing the rear case
  59.  
  60. Time required for this modification is .5 hours or less.
