  51. Turbo Master CPU is compatible with 
  52. nearly all Commodore C64 software.  
  53. This includes programs written in 
  54. Basic, machine-language programs, GEOS,
  55. programs which move screen memory, and 
  56. bit-mapped graphics screens.  The main 
  57. limitation is that the few 
  58. assembly-language programs which use 
  59. 'illegal' or undocumented 6502 op-codes
  60. will not run because Turbo Master CPU 
  61. uses an enhanced 65C02 microprocessor 
  62. in which many previously undocumented 
  63. op-codes are now officially assigned as
  64. useful instructions.  Fortunately such 
  65. programs are rare.

  67. Computer Compatibility
  68.  
  69. Turbo Master CPU is intended for 
  70. Commodore 64 and 64C computers.  It 
  71. also works with the SX-64 portable, as 
  72. well as the C128 (in C64 mode).  The 
  73. 'turbo'disk Load and Save routines are 
  74. for a 1541 disk drive, or close 
  75. compatible.  The 'turbo' disk routines 
  76. can easily be turned off if you are 
  77. using a different drive, and you will 
  78. still have the benefit of the four 
  79. times faster processing speed.  
  80. Cassette tape cannot be used with Turbo
  81. Master CPU.  (The slow cassette tape is
  82. inconsistent with anything 'turbo'.)

  84. Schnedler Systems data acquisition and 
  85. control interface boards.  Turbo Master
  86. CPU is compatible with the GEORAM 512k 
  87. Memory Expansion from Berkeley

  95. size of a Commodore 1764 Ram Expansion 
  96. Unit.  Is has a metal case 
  97. approximately 4 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, 
  98. with a gold-plated circuit board edge
  99. connector extending about 1 1/2 inches.

  101. Technical Details
  102.  
  103. In addition to a Rockwell R65C02P4 
  104. microprocessor clocked at 4.09 MHz,
  105. Turbo Master includes its own 64k of
  106. fast static RAM (120 ns) and a 32k 
  107. EPROM.  The on-chip port on the regular
  108. 6510 processor in the C64 is emulated 
  109. with TTL logic for bank switching.
  110. There are 16 ICs in total.  In fact, 
  111. Turbo Master CPU is practically a 
  112. complete 64k microprocessor, lacking 
  113. only a keyboard and screen.  During 
  114. operation of Turbo Master CPU, the 6510
  115. microprocessor in the C64 is completely
  116. bypassed, while the VIC (video) chip, 
  117. Sid (sound) chip, keyboard and serial 
  118. bus port are all accessed by Turbo 
  119. Master CPU and operate normally.  The 
  120. 6526 CIA timers in the C64 continue to 
  121. be clocked at their usual 1.0225 MHz 
  122. rate.  Speed change between the 
  123. standard 1.0225 MHz processor clock 
  124. rate and the fast 4.09 MHz clock rate 
  125. can be accomplished either manually 
  126. using the switches, or by software.  
  127. (The software speed switches Bit 7 of
  128. memory address $00.)  Assembly-language
  129. programmers can use the full enhanced 
  130. 65C02 instruction set, and we have a 
  131. 65C02 assembler available (MAE).

  133. ROM 1 / Rom 2 Switch
  134.  
  135. You will notice a switch for selecting 
  136. either ROM 1 or ROM 2.  These are two 
  137. versions of the C64 Kernal.  ROM 1 is a
  138. 'feature' ROM.  The cassette tape 
  139. routines have all been removed and 
  140. replaced by fast disk Load and Save 
  141. routines and by a DOS wedge.  ROM 1 is 
  142. highly compatible with most programs.  
  143. ROM 2, which is a 'compatibility' ROM, 
  144. is nevertheless provided.  The cassette
  145. tape routines are present, but are 
  146. disabled.  ROM 2 does not have any 
  147. extra features compared to a standard 
  148. C64 Kernal ROM, but you still have the 
  149. benefit of four times faster processing
  150. speed.

  155. well in combination with the Turbo 
  156. Master CPU processor accelerator to 
  157. give you the best of both worlds is 
  158. JiffyDOS from Creative Micro Designs

  161. differs from a simple 'turbo' disk load
  162. and save in that it also speeds up disk
  163. operations from within programs.

  165. it does require you to replace ROMS 
  166. inside your computer and inside your 
  167. disk drive.  Here's the deal: If you 
  168. have or are buying JiffyDOS from 
  169. Creative Micro Designs, tell us and we 
  170. can supply a Turbo Master CPU with a 
  171. JiffyDOS-compatible ROM in the 'ROM 
  172. 1'switch position in place of our 
  173. standard 'feature' ROM at no additional
  174. cost.  Note that you must have the
  175. basic JiffyDOS system from Creative 
  176. Micro Designs for this option to be of 
  177. benefit; otherwise you will not have a 
  178. fast loader at all without our 
  179. standard ROM 1.

  183. Operation of Turbo Master CPU is quite 
  184. simple and nearly self-evident.  A 
  185. single sheet of instructions would be 
  186. enough.  Nevertheless the manual is 24
  187. pages in length, in an attempt to place
  188. in your hands all the information you 
  189. might need.  A disk is included with a 
  190. few demo and utility programs, as well
  191. as text files for assembly-language 
  192. programmers documenting the enhanced 
  193. 65C02 instuction set.

  212.  We have tried it and as far as 
  213. speeding things up, it does work well!
  214.  But when used with the bbs, when the 
  215. board resets the send and receive 
  216. lights flash and the modem never resets
  217. or you get a 'no modem' message. If 
  218. there is any change or we do get it 
  219. working i will update my comments on 
  220. the cpu...
