*+*+**+*¢ MINUTES APRIL 1992 MEETING¢ ==========================¢¢ ALEX showed us a printout of some¢of what is available on the NEW NEST¢International BBS (516 234-4943). From¢BBS BASE #19, KAJ DE VOS from Holland¢writes to JIM HARRIS. He decried the¢support of the ATARI computers in the¢USA. In Europe the ST is much stronger¢and better supported. The 8-Bit¢support is disappearing rapidly. He¢has been programming the ST as a file¢server for the 8-Bit Atari. What,¢another slave for the little 8 BIT¢ATARI, like the IBM clone owned by¢ALAN SHARKIS? ¢¢ ALEX read us the message he sent¢to WOLFGANG BURGER of ABBUC in Germany¢on the BBS. He told him that a friend¢of theirs JOE KENNEDY, past president¢of J.A.C.G., and a member of ABBUC, is¢coming to Germany. Perhaps he can be¢of help in translating some of the¢excellent German programs into¢English.¢¢ NIBBLES & BYTES March 1992¢mentioned our Newsletter. They said¢"this is a great disk that shows the¢talents of this user group...". Thanks¢fellows your compliments are¢appreciated!¢¢ HAROLD PEGLER our Disk Librarian¢received a standing ovation for the¢great job he has been doing with the¢disk library.¢¢ AIM MAGAZINE April 1992. They¢reviewed our DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.¢ELLEN LENTZ gave us a great review and¢we thank AIM Magazine and ELLEN for¢it.¢¢ THE SAGE SCROLL from Eire P.A.¢March 1992 issue. They reprinted an¢article by our STAN SCHENFELD called¢PROGRAMMING FOR BEGINNERS. On page 16¢they reviewed the PROGRAMMING KIT by¢our own RON FETZER. Thank you¢fellows.¢¢ SAN LEANDRO CLUB in California.¢In their feature POUNDING ON THE 8-¢BITS by BOB WOOLLEY he dedicates his¢article to the OL' HACKERS. Thanks¢BOB!¢¢ ACE OF SYRACUSE March 1992 issue¢said that TOM FECTEAU will review the¢DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM and demo it at¢the April Meeting. Thank you TOM! They¢also have an announcement expressing¢sympathy on the death of our own KRIS¢HOLTEGAARD.¢¢ From JACG the January 1992 issue.¢They devote an article on KRIS¢HOLTEGAARD and his accomplishments.¢They also have an obituary on KRIS in¢the same issue.¢ ¢CORRESPONDENCE:¢¢ A letter from BEN POEHLAND. He¢writes us that the contractors are¢finished rebuilding his house. He is¢working very hard on the mail campaign¢to start up a NEW 8-BIT MAGAZINE. So¢far BEN has mailed out 1,400¢information kits and there is no end¢in sight. The campaign has been¢extended to APRIL 15 and has been¢extended GLOBALLY. Kits have been sent¢to Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand,¢Autralia, Korea, Algeria and Austria.¢He said that exhaustion is settling¢in. The campaign is also running over¢budget. BEN estimated he has spent¢over $1,200 on this campaign so far.¢The returns as of March 15 were less¢than expected. He writes us that¢someday he will make a surprise visit¢to our club. We welcome you BEN!¢ BEN sent us a later postcard in¢which he writes that the mail campaign¢is finally winding down. He sent out¢1,510 kits, 12,000 zerox', 5,000¢labels and paid $1,300 of his own¢money. He says he is exhausted. BEN¢your efforts on behalf of the 8-Bit¢community is HERCULEAN. It cannot be¢compensated in any way. The OL'¢HACKERS appreciate it and thank you¢for it very much, and so should every¢8 BIT'er.¢¢ A letter to HARRY TUTHILL from¢GINA BRYANT our member in Virginia.¢She sends greetings to all of us. MIKE¢(sailor) BRYANT is on his ship in¢PUERTO RICO. GINA writes us that she¢bought another 130XE for $50.00. GINA¢is now becoming very handy with the¢computer. She really is an OL' HACKER¢now! She replaced the springs on the¢keyboard on the 800XL. For those of¢you who want to write to MIKE here is¢his address: FC-1 MICHAEL BRYANT, USS¢MILWAUKEE, AOR-2, FBO AE09578-3024.¢¢ JOE KENNEDY he ex-president of¢JACG, and also a member of ABBUC in¢Germany, is going to Germany. ALEX¢sent him some literature that SAM¢COREY our member from New Jersey¢forwarded to ALEX for JOE to take¢along to ABBUC and WOLFGANG BURGER.¢¢ A letter, and disk from TOM¢ANDREWS our member from Manlius, N.Y.¢He posted the last two OL' HACKERS¢NEWSLETTERS on the ACE OF SYRACUSE¢BBS. He arc-ed them into one file. He¢felt that in this way a NON member¢could see what they are missing! At¢ACE they have received many inquires¢from people who picked up an 8-Bit¢system and now they want to know how¢to use it. TOM made a suggestion that¢we should write a beginners 8-Bit¢manual for all of these people.¢¢ ALEX responded to him and thanked¢him for his disks. TOM's Gemini 10X¢printer prints like brand new. TOM¢bought it for $25.00 at a garage sale.¢He informed TOM that we have only¢about one half of the club using a¢modem. No one is on GENIE. ALEX¢thanked him his programming updates.¢¢ A letter from BRUCE WILLIS of¢MAGIC. He sent us the March and April¢1992 Disks of the Month. Thanks¢BRUCE.¢¢ ALEX responded by thanking BRUCE¢for the disks and informing him that¢they can use anything out of our¢newsletter for their own on disk¢newsletter¢¢ A letter from JIM CUTTLER our¢member from England. He writes us and¢compliments us on our newsletter disk.¢He also sent us a few new disks from¢England.¢¢ ALEX responded by informing JIM¢that if he wants some disks from our¢library he should notify us and they¢will be sent to him.¢¢ A letter from ROLAND GRANT of the¢GARDEN CITY ACE, in Victoria British¢Colombia. ROLAND sent us some more of¢JOHN PICKEN'S great articles that we¢can reprint if we want to. JOHN PICKEN¢is one of the premier 8-Bit¢programmers from Canada. He is the one¢who updated Turbo Basic to run¢correctly in North America. ROLAND¢said he sent us these articles because¢"THE OL' HACKERS IS SIGNIFICANT IN THE¢8-BIT COMMUNITY".¢¢ ALEX responded that this is a¢letter from heaven for an editor. ALEX¢thanked him for this great offer, an¢he told ROWLAND that now that there¢are very few commercial sources for¢our computer, the Newsletters are the¢only real source of information. Our¢newsletter translates from 25 to 28¢pages of information. This is more¢information than when ANTIC or ANALOG¢were publishing.¢¢ A letter from SPECTRUM - ATARI¢GROUP OF ERIE, PA - R. P. BAUMAN SAGE¢PUBLICATION DIRECTOR. They are¢starting up a newsletter on disk. They¢said they will have lots of¢information from our disk on their¢disk. He said there has not been much¢response to help from his members. It¢may be only a temporary thing. They¢will sell it to the members for $3.00.¢They will use our newsletter program¢format. He tells us that he sold only¢one disk. He may not continue doing it¢because of the poor response.¢¢ ALEX responded by telling BOB not¢to let it get him down . His¢newsletter is great. It is a shame¢if his club does not appreciate it.¢ALEX suggested that he cut the price¢to $2.00. It is a bargain. They are¢getting the equivalent of 25 pages of¢ATARI 8 BIT information. NOTE: OUR OWN¢MEMBERS GET OUR NEWSLETTER FREE!¢¢ We received a letter and a disk¢from France with no legible return¢address. We would like to respond but¢are not able to do it. We gave it to¢BOB ULSCHMID for someone with a French¢background to decipher. The letter¢said he read our newsletter and he had¢trouble with a Ramdisk.¢¢ A letter from LARRY TISHBEIN our¢member from Qakertown, PA. He thanked¢ALEX for helping him with 1ST XLEnt¢Word Processor. He said he has¢benefitted many times over from¢belonging to the OL' HACKERS even¢though he lives in Pennsylvania.¢¢ ALEX responded by writing that¢this reminds him of ALLEN ATKINS who¢we also had to convince that the 1ST¢XLEnt Word Processor was one of the¢easiest and best word processors¢around for the 8-Bit computer, and¢which ALLEN now uses exclusively.¢¢ A letter to JOHN KASUPSKI of¢WNYAUG where ALEX congratulates him on¢the quality of the newsletter and in¢particular on his 8 part series¢"BASIC101".¢¢ ALEX said he reads every word of¢the POKEY NEWSLETTER and finds it very¢interesting. ALEX printed out the¢series and made copies of the first¢installment for the members present.¢¢ JOHN responded on the BBS and¢said he would furnish us any missing¢parts.¢¢DEMO'S:¢¢ ALEX first demoed a BIORYTHEM¢program, and passed around his¢printout, showing his ups and downs,¢physically, mentally and emotionally.¢P.S. ALEX was down on all 3 counts!¢¢ ALEX next demoed a program called¢DOSWIZ.OBJ, that requires a¢translator. We used the ULTRA¢TRANSLATOR which is the best in our¢opinion. This program will check your¢disk and find out if there are any¢missing sectors. You can reclaim them¢etc. It has most of the DOS functions¢available for you. This is a disk you¢should have. You can zero unused¢sectors, you can restore deleted¢programs, you can have a disk map¢etc.¢¢ ALEX then demoed a program called¢MENU2BIN.BAS. It runs BASIC and M/L¢programs. The great thing about this¢program you can write a short¢description and save it. It will show¢the directory and the description of¢the file. A neat program that should¢be in everybodies main working¢library.¢¢ ALEX next demoed a great RENUMBER¢utility that renumbers your program¢almost instantly. RENUMBER.BAS¢¢ ALEX demoed PSLABEL7. This can¢saves your labels with its ICON. It is¢the latest PS Labels program that we¢have at this time.¢¢ ALEX showed PSUTILY.BAS. You can¢list your Icons on the screen or in¢print. You can rename them. You can¢change printer type etc.¢¢ ALEX showed an ANTIC type menu¢utility. Great for many programs. It¢loads BASIC or M/L programs.¢¢ We saw ALEX's SIDEPRNT.BAS¢program. Prints letters down the left¢side of the paper. Great for SPINE¢LABELS.¢¢ ALEX showed us PSET82. This is¢program that lets you set up your¢EPSON printer for various print¢styles.¢¢ We saw CUSTMPRT.MOD it prints out¢everything including inverse and ASCII¢symbols etc.¢¢ We also saw DATA-X data base¢program from ANTIC.¢¢ We saw a double sided disk on¢NUMEROLOGY. It goes into the library.¢We prognasticated AL ATKINS future.¢The program comes with a SHOVEL to dig¢out all the #$%"#&@!¢¢ ALEX showed a SOLITAIRE program.¢A great program that keeps your score¢etc. The disk is also known as THE¢SOLITAIRE MASTER and it is in our¢library.¢¢¢NOSTALGIA:¢¢ ON screen, we read the minutes of¢the club meeting of AUG. 1986, by AL¢ATKINS. Very interesting but before my¢time. NOTE: The first meeting of the¢OL' HACKERS was in DEC. 1985. We go¢back a l o n g way!¢¢ *****¢SPECIAL:¢¢ The club wished RON a HAPPY¢BIRTHDAY, and gave him a rousing hand.¢MANY HAPPY YEARS OF GOOD HEALTH AND¢HAPPINESS RON!¢ *****¢¢ DOOR PRIZES:¢¢ RON FETZER¢ HARRY TUTHILL¢ BOB ULSCHMID¢ AL ATKINS¢ HAROLD PEGLER¢ STAN SCHENFELD¢¢A CONTEST:¢¢ The members are asked to bring in¢a GRAPHIC PRINTOUT. The best graphic¢will win a prize. In the JUNE 20¢meeting we will have the graphics¢contest judgeing for the best work.¢¢Submitted by ¢ Ron Fetzer¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢ page 8¢¢¢>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>END<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<¢¢
