NewWave Excel Bridge Fix File:
If you have downloaded the NewWave/Excel 3.0 bridge from CompuServe
(or other online sources) as the file NWXL.EXE, the following
information may be of importance to you.
As you may recall, there were three steps involved in recreating
the NewWave Excel Bridge disk:
1) Binary download the file to your PC as NWXL.EXE and copy it
to a floppy disk.
2) Execute NWXL.EXE with the -d option in order to recreate the
directory structure of the original disk.
3) Run the batch file DELETEME.BAT. This deletes a dummy file.
PKZIP will not allow you to archive an empty subdirectory,
so the DUMMY file was used to ensure a blank directory
was created.
Recently, there have been reports of users that have been unable to
import serialized object files (.SER files) that had NewWave Excel
objects in them. Analysis of .SER files that were experiencing
importing failures revealed that there was an extra file attached
to the NewWave/Excel objects. You guessed it, the file was DUMMY!
Users who obtained actual NewWave/Excel 3.0 Bridge Disks from HP
(via a bridge disk that shipped with later copies of NewWave or
obtained by calling HP for the disk) or users who recreated the
bridge properly would NOT experience this problem.
HP NewWave Technical Support has developed a procedure for
NewWave/Excel users to correct this condition. The steps are
as follows:
1) Look to see if you have the problem. Check your Excel object
directories for DUMMY files (\HPNWDOS\EXCEL\objname\dummy.
If your object directories have no dummy files, you have
no problem. A later upload of the NWXL.EXE file had a .TXT
entension on the dummy file, which, while improperly added
to your objects, will NOT cause import/export problems.
If you have DUMMY.TXT, you should probably go ahead with
the remaining steps.
2) Delete the DUMMY files in ALL object directories.
3) Deinstall your NewWave Excel Bridge. This is done through
the SETTINGS, MANAGE MASTERS screen. Press CONTROL-ALT-X
and a DEINSTALL button will appear. Select the NewWave Excel
Bridge. Click on DEINSTALL, then OK to confirm deletion.
At this time, your Excel 3.0 bridge has been removed, and your
Excel 3.0 objects will be X'd out, and inaccessible.
4) Shut down NewWave, and insert your Excel bridge disk. Change
to that drive, and now run DELETEME.BAT to remove the
dummy file from the bridge disk.
5) Type INSTALL to reinstall the NewWave Excel Bridge. Bring
up NewWave and your objects will be reattached to Excel, and
you will be free of the dummy problem.
IF you have determined that you have the DUMMY problem, but have
already exported NewWave/Excel 3.0 objects to DOS (and deleted the
originals from NewWave), then you also will need to run the attached
DOS utility, FIXSER.EXE, against the problem .SER files. The DOS
syntax is as follows:
Usage: fixser <filepath>
(filepath: full pathname to .SER file, including the .SER)
Example: fixser c:\backup\excelobj.ser
The file will be modified, so you may wish to first back it up.
Please note that the problem is due to the way the bridge disk was
(improperly) recreated. The disks shipped from HP do not exhibit
this problem (no dummy file) nor do bridge disks that were created
by properly following the instructions.
