Q: There are some odd files on my disk, what are they? Some of them end
with a '.chk' extension, others are just random strings of numbers and
letters with no extension (ex: 13011c39 OR &T012345), and some start
with 'TEMP' (ex: TEMPSTRU.dbf).
A: These are temporary files created by TeleMagic.
.CHK FILES
----------
The files with a .chk extension are used during the TeleMagic
Rebuild. Whenever a .dbf file is rebuilt, an associated .chk file is
created that contains statistics on the .dbf file. The next time a
rebuild is requested, the .dbf file statistics are compared to those
recorded in the .chk file. If there have not been any changes, then
that .dbt file will not be rebuilt. You will find that this saves a
lot of time in managing your data and results in less wear on your
hard drive. DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES!!!
RANDOM ALPHANUMERIC FILE NAMES
------------------------------
These file names are a random alphanumeric string with no
extension and they are the swap files that TeleMagic creates every
time you touch the F3 key to swap out to DOS or to another program.
Under normal operation, they are deleted when you type "EXIT" to
return to the original version of TeleMagic. However, if you are not
exiting the TSR mode properly, they may not be deleted. These files
are approximately 500K in size!
Check the current date on the file (you can use the
wordprocessor's List command). If the file is older than today's
date, you may delete it. DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES FROM THE DOS
WINDOW!!! If you do, TeleMagic may lose its place!
If you see these files accumulating on you disk, review the
correct exit procedures.
1) From the DOS prompt, type "EXIT" to return to TeleMagic.
2) From the TeleMagic Main Menu, touch "X" or "ESC", and answer
"Y" to confirm the exit. F3 is not used to exit TeleMagic - only
to window out to DOS temporarily.
3) Then it is acceptable to turn off the computer and/or log out
of the network safely.
STARTS with TEMP
----------------
Another type of temporary file. See note above.
