***** LESSON 6B *****
Signposts Continued
Spacing subheadings - the amount of space around a subhead should
reflect its importance in the hierarchy. The heading should be closer
to the text it refers to than to the preceding text.
So, as in this example, the main heading is preceded by a 2 line
space and followed by a 1 line space.....
(MAIN HEADING)
Then the next level of heading might have a 1 line space above and
below.
(Second Heading)
While the 3rd level would have only 1 space above it but none below
it.
(Third Level)
This principal of spacing subheadings applies also to headings with
rules and tints.
The line immediately following a subheading should be set flush to the
left.
*Side Headings*
If you are using a wide column of text with a generous side margin
then there may be room for Side Headings.
Side headings serve to index the text rather than break it up. You can
read through the text and ignore side headings, whereas a heading
within the columns makes a more obvious break.
Because side headings have to keep pace with the text to which they
refer they are best kept to the same size as the bulk of the text.
(About all you should do is bold the side headings.) Make sure that
there are not many short paragraphs each with its own heading. If the
heading in the short column runs to more lines than the text in the
wider column it makes ugly and confusing gaps.
**********
Note that none of my examples in this lesson uses a graphic element
such as bullets. If any of these graphic elements are used be very
cautious in their use. They can cause a fussy and confused look to
your pages (and add to production time).
Learn proper typography first before you start to use graphic
elements. You may be pleasantly surprised at how good your document
looks by just using type.
But anyway, the next lesson is on how to use Rules, Boxes and Other
Graphic Elements.
