The following program "Tape Catalogger" is hereby
entered into Public Domain world as Freeware. The author
shall bear no responsibility as to any problems that may
arise from it's use. Nor shall the author be held
accountable for any damage that may occur to a system from
any tampering with this program. This program left my
system in complete working order and was compressed using
the "AV" feature of PKZIP (tm PKWare) This program maybe
distributed freely in it's entirety and may not be changed
in any way without written consent of the author.
System Requirements
---------------------
MSDOS v3.0 or later
Minimum of 512K RAM
Floppy drive or Hard Drive (Hard Drive preferred)
Color or Monochrome monitor.
Config.sys entry: Files=30
History
---------
This program was written to make life a whole lot easier
when searching for files on certain tapes. After backing
up files to tapes I found a definite need for a utility
that would tell me where the files were and on what tape
number they were on. For this reason I wrote a small DBMS
related program to assist me in doing so. My tape software
for some reason does not support this feature. So after
calling the company and asking them when it would
accommodate his feature I finally gave up and wrote this
utility. I have been using it now for over 3 months and
have found it very useful and I sincerely hope that it
will fit your needs.
Filenames
-----------
The program contained the following files when
distributed:
CAT.DAT
CAT.K01
TAPES1.APP
PRUN.EXE
TAPES1.BAP
TAPES1.RUN
TAPES2.DAT
TAPES2.K01
TAPES2.K02
TAPES2.K03
TAPES.BAT (Batch file for program)
TAPE.DOC (Progam documentation)
Documentation
---------------
Copy all the files to a selected directory and type
"Tapes". The batch file may be edited to accommodate your
needs. There is no limit as to how many records you can
store only disk space. Therefore I would recommend putting
it on a hard drive.
E.G. C:> MD TAPES
C:> A:
A:> COPY *.* C:\TAPES
C:
C:> CD\TAPES
C:> TAPES
When all files are opened you will be greeted by the Main
Menu. Just select a function and hit enter. The feature
you selected will determine on how the information is
retrieved. At this point an entry can be added by using
the "INS" key. Then simply add the data. Or if you wish to
edit the highlighted feature use the "ENTER" key to
display the information on that item and edit it as you
wish. You can also delete an item by highlighting the item
and using the "DEL" key. You will be asked if you wish to
delete this item and you will need to hit the enter key
one more time to delete the item. All the fields on the
update tapes screen are pretty self explanatory until you
get to the category field. At this point you can either
scroll down the list and hit enter to select the category
or use the "INS" key to add a category. I have supplied a
few categories with this program but I am sure you will be
able to add many more. You may also delete an item in the
category screen by simply highlighting the item and
hitting the "DEL" key. All the items in the category
screen have the ability to be located by entering the 1st
letter of the category i.e. "D" for database. Of course
the more letters you enter the more precise the program
will retrieve the information. The same is true in the
main menu when you search by FILENAME, DESCRIPTION or
CATEGORY.
Within the Main Menu is also a Report Menu. The
only report that you will be able to print is listed.
Hopefully this will give a user the added incentive to
send a donation for a full blown version of this program.
