* Author's Notes *
Please feel free to praise/condemn this PWAD anytime. I'm always
looking for ways to better my level-making capabilities. But the only
way I can do this is if I hear from you great DOOM players. Let
me know about any bugs or comments so I can make this WAD a joy to play.
I'm usually in Compuserve every day. I promise to respond to each and
every comment I receive.
One last note: Only experienced players should tackle this level on UV.
It is extremely tough!
THE STORY SO FAR...
Shattering gunshots compete with the diabolical screams of hell-spawn.
The gate looms before you, towering one hundred feet straight up. Bullets
and the fiery breath of demons explode around you. You race towards
the gate as ...
The darkness recedes. Echoing in your skull is an evil, dreadful
voice, "Welcome to Hell...".
The darkness is replaced by a bright, merciless light. The dull throb
of a headache explodes into a full fledged assault on your skull. The
bright light slowly reveals a small room. Apparently you have awaken
on a not-too-uncomfortable bed. The annoying light is an overhead
spot light, illuminating the surrounding area. From the look of the
bed and curtain partitions, it appears you are in some sort of private
hospital. The smell of disinfectant bolsters the theory. However,
an underlying aroma of blood and death raises the hairs on the back
of your neck.
"Where the Hell am I?", you ask yourself. "Why in HELL, of course", a
disembodied voice seems to answer your silent question.
Slowly the events of the past days (weeks?, months?) bubble to the surface,
relieving some of the confusion. Hard to believe that a simple recon mission
could go so wrong. Meet some undercover operatives, find out what this
"Artifact" is all about, then return with the information. Right!
The ambush at the bottom of the elevator nearly ended the mission from the
start. Of course, all the undercover operatives were dead, slaughtered by
the living dead. The swaying corpses in the hidden rebel base didn't help
either.
Worse of all, demons from hell had overrun the UAC base in the Andes
mountains. Demons! What the HELL is going on?!?
What seemed like days later, a fierce battle through a river fortress
reveals "The Artifact". There, at the bottom of a tremendous crater,
lay a giant pentagram, the sign of black magic, The Devil. Hanging over
it, a giant block of stone seemed ready to grind any unfortunate
trespasser into dust. But better dust than devil food! You run for
the Artifact as demon fire explodes around you.
Apparently, UAC scientists knew how to use this thing. The Artifact led
to several other "platforms". Unfortunately, one platform led to somewhere
other than Earth! Endless battle, endless pain, endless death. Will it
ever stop?
Before you stands a giant gate, easily towering a hundred feet straight up.
Yup, the Gates of Hell! The sudden eruption of endless hordes of evil pulls
your gaze from this nefarious site. The final battle between good and evil
begins, when...
Slowly you lower your aching legs to the floor. Waves of dizziness and
nausea wash over you, then ebb. A quick scan reveals your not alone.
A second bed is partially hidden by a curtain. A grunt like yourself!
Unfortunately, very dead. Suicide.
His hand is cold, stiff. However, you claim from his dead grasp your
salvation, a standard-issue auto-pistol, with 50 rounds! Definitely
beats bare hands and feet. A glint from his other hand reveals an
additional prize, a vocorder. Apparently, your dead friend has been
though this "hell-hole" before. His story does not ease your mind any.
Most of his tale sounds like the rambling of a madman. You know better.
"Name's John Conner. Sargeant. Space Marine. I'm all that's left of
of Charlie Company. Hope you have support, and lots of it!"
"This is some kind of hospital, but NOT for humans. Some of the
experiments I've seen! No human would be jaded enough to perform these
experiments! Not even Nazis were this sick! "
"The cells are sealed from other areas by some type of force field. You
need a computer key to drop the field. Fortunately, other grunts have
been through here before me. You can deactivate some of the force
fields by shooting (or punching) the far right side the force fields. This
will overload the circuit and the field will drop temporarily. Beware that
this will only work once, then the field will reset. After you disable a
force field this way and it resets, you will need a computer key to lower it
again."
"The "medical facilities" occupy the upper level. You'll need a yellow
computer key to access them. But man, is it worth it! You'll never be
injured long if you visit this place."
"I found two armories in my many battles here. A small one can be found
north of here, but it's entrance through the "main control room" is heavily
guarded. It is found in the "chaingun room". You may want to back-door it
through the medical facility to reach this armory. While still heavily
defended, your odds of surviving are much better."
The other requires a visit through the "chainsaw room" found in "main control
room" area. A panel will lower in the "main control room". This entrance
can be found on the left as you exit the "chainsaw room". You know you're on
the right trail if you enter the "rising stairs of death" trap. But be
forewarned: you better have visited the small armory, the three weapons
rooms, and the medical facilities if you want any chance of surviving that
one!"
"Good thing I found the rocket launcher. I don't think I could have taken
down the main armory guards without it!"
"The only way out requires a blue key. There's an elevator there. Jimmy
made it, I think. Unfortunately, he never came back!"
"I can't take it anymore!!! No matter what I do, how many demons I kill,
how many times I'm killed, I always come back here! Monsters appearing out
of nowhere...endless death and pain...I just can't take it anymore..."
A single gun shot is heard. Then silence. The vocorder sputters and dies,
it's stored energy finally depleted.
Hints for Welcome
1. All consoles work. Activate a console by pressing spacebar (or walking
over - all three sides). Some consoles control more than one object
(left and right side of console's front).
2. Most doors are activated by computer keys. Once you have the correct
color key, use the space bar to raise the access panel. You now can
activate the controls to open the door by pressing the space bar again.
3. Monsters can literally appear out of nowhere. Listen up, and watch your
back!
4. Oh yes. Supplies are limited, so don't go nuts when you hit a motherload.
Wasting health and ammo by grabbing items when you don't really need
them will definately spell trouble for you later.
