  45. visited, described, sorted, and rated. We use the same rating system
  46. used by video game manufacturers to determine if the site is appropriate

  97. You can use InterGO file transfer to get files from FTP sites on the
  98. Internet, including documents, software, and images. Use the Sites button
  99. to see a selection of popular FTP sites. You can also add your favorite
  100. FTP sites to this list. Drag and drop files from a remote computer to your
  101. hard disk. Use the Find option to search Internet FTP sites for the file
  102. you want.

  107. SCREENING TECHNOLOGY

  109. InterGO incorporates the exclusive KinderGuard security screening 
  110. and the SafeSurf rating system to filter inappropriate material. 
  111. These features allow a parent or administrator to set parameters 
  112. defining the types of materials which will be accessible to
  113. children or employees. KinderGuard screens material from Web and
  114. gopher sites, ftp archives, news groups, and even mailing lists. 
  115. When used in the home, the screening mechanism enables parents to 
  116. prevent children from accessing inappropriate material. In the 
  117. office, the screening device can be used to prevent employees 
  118. from accessing objectionable sites via a corporate Internet 
  119. account.

  121. KinderGuard rates Internet sources for sexual and violent content
  122. through in-house editorial review, a web crawler that searches for
  123. objectionable terminology, and an automated customer feedback system.
  124. The company then applies a rating code established by video game
  125. manufacturers (EC - Early Childhood; KA - Kids to Adults; T - Teens;
  126. MA - Mature Audiences; and AO - Adults Only). Different age ranges
  127. can be set for each user based on a unique profile and password,
  128. ensuring that children are only able to access age-appropriate material.

  131. can restrict access exclusively to sites rated using the SafeSurf rating
  132. system. This emerging standard gives parents and educators explicit
  133. control over access to sex, violence, profanity, and other types of

  136. How Parents Use KinderGuard
  137.  
  138. The InterGO administrator (who should be an adult) assigns an
  139. appropriate age for each person using InterGO. The age need not reflect
  140. the person's actual age. For example, you might choose to permit a
  141. 12-year-old to see sites rated 13+, or to omit sites rated 21+ for an
  142. adult. As administrator, you type a password that you should keep secret
  143. from others. Change your password frequently and store it privately
  144. away from the computer.

  148. When you use InterGO to search for and show sites, it only
  149. shows those appropriate for the assigned age. For example, a
  150. 14-year-old cannot see sites rated 17+ or 21+, and an adult who is
  151. assigned an age of 17+ does not see sites rated 21+.

  153. The Research Resource

  155. When you use the Research Resource to locate Web or gopher
  156. sites by subject, only those rated for the child's age will display on the
  157. page. She won't see even site addresses rated for older children and
  158. adults.

  160. Private URL Rating List

  162. When you see a Web page that you do not want your child to be
  163. able to access, click the right mouse button to see a menu of commands,
  164. and click the KinderGuard command. In the Rate URL dialog box, drag
  165. the slider to the age rating you want to assign for that page on your
  166. computer. When you do this, you have your own private rating list that
  167. no one can change but you. (You can also use your private list to change
  168. ratings assigned by InterGO Communications.) If you update the
  169. InterGO KinderGuard list, it will not change any settings on your Private
  170. URL Rating List. With these tools, as well as SafeSurf support, InterGO
  171. helps you control the material your children see on the Internet.

  173. Note: This multiple screening provides significant assistance in
  174. determining what kinds of material to access. Because of the constantly
  175. evolving nature of the Internet, no program can guarantee that you and
  176. your children will be protected from all offensive material. You can share
  177. the responsibility for protecting children by supervising their access to the
  178. Internet.
