SCREENING TECHNOLOGY InterGO incorporates the exclusive KinderGuard security screening and the SafeSurf rating system to filter inappropriate material. These features allow a parent or administrator to set parameters defining the types of materials which will be accessible to children or employees. KinderGuard screens material from Web and gopher sites, ftp archives, news groups, and even mailing lists. When used in the home, the screening mechanism enables parents to prevent children from accessing inappropriate material. In the office, the screening device can be used to prevent employees from accessing objectionable sites via a corporate Internet account. KinderGuard rates Internet sources for sexual and violent content through in-house editorial review, a web crawler that searches for objectionable terminology, and an automated customer feedback system. The company then applies a rating code established by video game manufacturers (EC - Early Childhood; KA - Kids to Adults; T - Teens; MA - Mature Audiences; and AO - Adults Only). Different age ranges can be set for each user based on a unique profile and password, ensuring that children are only able to access age-appropriate material. InterGO users who prefer a more conservative approach to screening can restrict access exclusively to sites rated using the SafeSurf rating system. This emerging standard gives parents and educators explicit control over access to sex, violence, profanity, and other types of objectionable material. How Parents Use KinderGuard The InterGO administrator (who should be an adult) assigns an appropriate age for each person using InterGO. The age need not reflect the person's actual age. For example, you might choose to permit a 12-year-old to see sites rated 13+, or to omit sites rated 21+ for an adult. As administrator, you type a password that you should keep secret from others. Change your password frequently and store it privately away from the computer. InterGO Browser When you use InterGO to search for and show sites, it only shows those appropriate for the assigned age. For example, a 14-year-old cannot see sites rated 17+ or 21+, and an adult who is assigned an age of 17+ does not see sites rated 21+. The Research Resource When you use the Research Resource to locate Web or gopher sites by subject, only those rated for the child's age will display on the page. She won't see even site addresses rated for older children and adults. Private URL Rating List When you see a Web page that you do not want your child to be able to access, click the right mouse button to see a menu of commands, and click the KinderGuard command. In the Rate URL dialog box, drag the slider to the age rating you want to assign for that page on your computer. When you do this, you have your own private rating list that no one can change but you. (You can also use your private list to change ratings assigned by InterGO Communications.) If you update the InterGO KinderGuard list, it will not change any settings on your Private URL Rating List. With these tools, as well as SafeSurf support, InterGO helps you control the material your children see on the Internet. Note: This multiple screening provides significant assistance in determining what kinds of material to access. Because of the constantly evolving nature of the Internet, no program can guarantee that you and your children will be protected from all offensive material. You can share the responsibility for protecting children by supervising their access to the Internet.
