  1. Genius LT WIN32S Installation Hints
  2.  
  3. Microsoft WIN32S makes it possible to run a 32-bit application with
  4. the normal Windows 3.1 (a 16-bit application).  Genius LT is a 
  5. 32-bit application making WIN32S necessary.
  6.  
  7. Genius LT is shipped with a WIN32S, but this is only installed 
  8. (automatically) if no existing WIN32S is found.
  9.  
  10. There are two cases where a WIN32S will not be found:
  11.  
  12. 1) The existing WIN32S is executable but is older than the one delivered
  13.    with Genius LT.  Theoretically, Genius LT should run without having to
  14.    install the delivered WIN32S.  In spite of this, you can still install
  15.    the delivered WIN32S.  However, because this concerns a function with
  16.    system dependencies, there is a small risk that if you do install ours,
  17.    you may bring your Windows installation into a non-executable state
  18.    ("out to lunch -- forever"). Should this occur, refer to the next hints.

  20. 2) The existing WIN32S has been entered into a non-executable state.
  21.    This is why its version could not be determined.  Please check the
  22.    following entries in the SYSTEM.INI file in your Windows directory:

  24.    In the [boot] section, there should be a "drivers" entry containing at
  25.    least a "mmsystem.dll" and a "winmm16.dll" modifier.

  31.    In the [386enh] section, there needs to be a "device" entry where
  32.    the W32S.386 file can be found.  There can only be one entry for
  33.    the file W32S.386!

  38.    You have to activate SHARE.EXE before you start WIN32S.

  40.    In addition to this, you have to set up virtual memory.  This can
  41.    be performed from the "control panel" (typically found in the "Main"
  42.    group).  There, you need the do the option "386 enhanced".

  44.    The conditions named above are the minimal requirements.  On your
  45.    computer, there could be other dependencies playing a role.
  46.  
  47.    If you would like to install the WIN32S that was delivered, start
  48.    the Genius LT "setup" program and select "(Install Microsoft WIN32S)".

  50.    If you explicitedly install the delivered WIN32S over the existing
  51.    WIN32S, the install program will copy all files that it will overwrite
  52.    or change into a directory called WIN32S.OLD in the Genius LT main
  53.    directory.
