  25. 1. Introduction to Exl-Plan
  26. ===========================
  27. Exl-Plan is a powerful, easy-to-use software package for
  28. preparing comprehensive financial projections, budgets,
  29. business plans etc. for one, three or five years ahead for
  30. new & established businesses of all sizes and types. It can
  31. also be used as a tool for strategic and corporate planning,
  32. business restructuring, financial appraisals and performance
  33. monitoring.

  35. This shareware release of Exl-Plan is freely distributable but
  36. refer to the file LICENSE.TXT for full details.

  38. Exl-Plan is primarily a workbook file which runs on the best-
  39. selling Excel spreadsheet from Microsoft. As Exl-Plan
  40. incorporates extensive formulae and pre-programmed menus and
  41. buttons only a very basic knowledge of Excel is required to
  42. prepare highly professional and presentable projections.
  43. Advanced Excel users can utilise their expertise to enhance
  44. and expand Exl-Plan to meet their particular needs.

  46. Exl-Plan requires Microsoft Excel releases 5, 7, 8, 95, 97
  47. for Windows 3.1 or 95/98/NT.

  49. Exl-Plan is available in three versions (Micro, Lite and Pro)
  50. and two editions using UK/International and US/Canadian
  51. accounting conventions - six variants in all. These versions
  52. have the flexibility to handle manufacturing, distribution and
  53. service businesses and are suitable for established businesses
  54. as well as for new ventures and strategic business units
  55. within major corporations. Exl-Plan is also ideal for use by
  56. professional advisers, consultants, training organisations,
  57. financial institutions and enterprise support agencies.

  59. Exl-Plan is pre-formatted to handle the very wide range of the
  60. variables and functions normally encountered when preparing
  61. financial projections. Based on the monthly and quarterly
  62. assumptions entered by the user, it compiles detailed and
  63. fully integrated financial projections for one year on a
  64. monthly basis and, in less detail, for a further two years on
  65. a quarterly basis (four years for Pro version). It produces
  66. dozens of pro-forma financial and management reports together
  67. with numerous graphs for key variables.

  69. Exl-Plan contains numerous facilities for accelerating the
  70. process of preparing projections and for undertaking global
  71. or specific "what-if" sensitivity analyses.

  74. calculations are pre-written; reports are pre-formatted and
  75. clearly laid out; menu structures follow logical sequences;
  76. and online help is available to the user at all stages. For

  78. environment which can be tailored and expanded to meet
  79. specialist needs and utilise existing spreadsheet-based data

  102. A downloaded shareware copy can be upgraded to its equivalent
  103. fully-operational commercial version by arranging payment and
  104. swapping the Upgrade Code Number (on FRONT sheet) for an
  105. Unlock Code by e-mail, fax, post etc.

  155. 5. Installing & Running Exl-Plan
  156. ================================
  157. IMPORTANT: Exl-Plan must always be installed from supplied
  158. installation disk(s) or via a downloaded installation file. It
  159. will not operate correctly if it is installed by simply
  160. transferring an Exl-Plan workbook file from one PC to another.
  161.  
  162. Install Exl-Plan from supplied 3.5" disks or from a
  163. distribution file downloaded from the Internet. You will need
  164. 5mb of hard disk space for installation and a further 6mb to
  165. set up Exl-Plan.
  166.  
  167. To install Exl-Plan, run the EXL*.EXE file via Run within the
  168. Program Manager or Start menu. You will be guided by extensive
  169. on-screen instructions.
  170.  
  171. To run Exl-Plan, proceed as follows:
  172.  
  173. a) Select Exl-Plan from the Exl-Plan Program Group (W3.1) or
  174. from the Programs menu (W95/98).
  175.

  178. b) Load Excel and open the EXLPLAN.XLS file within Exl-Plan's
  179. EXL***** subdirectory or folder (located below the EXCEL
  180. subdirectory or MY DOCUMENTS folder).
  181.  
  182. Loading Exl-Plan for the first time takes a few minutes while
  183. it goes through its setup routines - resetting its toolbar,
  184. making backups etc. On subsequent occasions, it loads much
  185. more quickly.
  186.  
  187. Note: If loading Exl-Plan with Excel 95 or higher, Excel may
  188. display a dialog about viruses. If Exl-Plan was secured from
  189. a reliable source or directly from Invest-Tech, press the
  190. Enable Macros button (Exl-Plan will not load properly if the
  191. Disable Macros button is pressed). As loading progresses, a
  192. further dialog may appear about the location of macros. This
  193. can be disabled or ignored.

  195. In certain exceptional circumstances, Exl-Plan may display 
  196. the message "Exl-Plan could not find its customized toolbar. 
  197. Refer to accompanying README file for further info." or may 
  198. hang when displayed the message "Exl-Plan is resetting 
  199. toolbars, please wait a minute or so" in the status bar (at 
  200. the bottom of Excel's Window). These problems are mainly due 
  201. to changes in file formats for Excel 5/95 and 97. They can be
  202. easily resolved using a 'fix' which will re-attach Exl-Plan's 
  203. toolbar to Excel. You can download an Excel file (ADDTOOL.ZIP
  204.  - 9k) containing this fix with instructions directly from 
  205. <www.planware.org/addtools.zip>. Alternatively, send an email 
  206. to <support@planware.org> stating the nature of your problem. 
  207. If using the fix, you might wish to refer to the notes at 
  208. Exl-Plan's FAQ at <www.planware.org/exlfaq.htm> about hanging
  209. and toolbars.

  213. 6. Your Master Copy of Exl-Plan
  214. ===============================
  215. If Exl-Plan was secured as shareware and subsequently upgraded
  216. remotely via Invest-Tech, the upgraded Exl-Plan workbook file
  217. should be kept safe and intact as the primary master version
  218. of Exl-Plan.

  257. Program icon (W3.1) or via Start|Programs|Exl-Plan Help
