Defending The Duchess
</hdr><body>
<p> Even for the rabid London press, it was going too far. Just
days before Christmas, Richard Blackwell, the noted purveyor of
worst-dressed lists, carped that the Duchess of York, the former
Sarah Ferguson, looked "as if she makes beds in Ireland, or
milks cows." The remarks came as the newly svelte Fergie was
having daughter Beatrice christened last week. The tabloids,
merciless till recently about the duchess's pudginess, leaped to
defend her. WHAT A JERK, howled the Sun. The Daily Mirror railed
that Blackwell was not one to point fingers, having had four
face-lifts. No need for a fifth -- off with his head!
