Before I start the doc to Trainer proper, I would like to tell you
a little bit about Steve Bye. If anyone has heard of F1
Software/Licenceware/Shareware, then chances are that you already
know who Steve Bye is.
Both Steve and his wife Belinda are the proprietors of F1 Software
and good friends of mine and really nice and honest peeps to boot.
Before Steve founded F1, he used to own his own computer shop and
even before that, he was a commercial programmer for some of the
classic platforms of yesteryear such as the C64, Amstrad and the
dear old (and much loved) Spectrum.
I have written a list of all Steve's main productions to date below
for you to look over and maybe you'll even have some of the
original cassettes/disks listed below. (collectors items now

Not only that, but I have also released a snapshot & doc of the
other classic spectrum game .... Punter.
Here you have the original Spectrum cassette docs for Classic
Trainer which was released via the GTI Software label (1989)
(the snapshot should also be supplied for you to play with ZXam V2)

LOADING INSTRUCTIONS
Type LOAD "" and press ENTER. If using 128K Spectrum, select 48K
Basic.
OBJECT OF THE GAME
As the owner of a stable of horses, it is your ambition to train
one or more of your stable to win the greatest 14 furlong race in
the calendar. To achieve this you must deduce the horses' ideal
racing distance, and by a combination of training and racing,
increase their class and fitness to a degree which will enable them
to win the ultimate race, or the season - The Derby.
THE SEASON
A season consists of 20 weeks; a week will have passed after the
completion of a race meeting, either by choosing to enter a race,
or the NO ENTRY option. Choose RACECARD OPTION to go to the race
meeting. STABLE returns you to check on your horses before
deciding to enter a race. All other options can be reached from
the STABLE screen, including LOAN, VET, SAVE, LOAD etc.
DISTANCE
It is important to establish as early as possible over which
distance the horses run best. Each horse is suited to one distance
only, so it is fair to assume that if a horse wins a race, that
race was its best distance. You can use the NOTES option to record
short remarks about each horse as you discover its strengths and
weaknesses.
FITNESS (F)
The fitness of a horse will increase by 1 each week you enter a
race. You may also try to improve fitness by the use of one or
more WORKOUTs. If a horse is over trained (i.e. When it is
already at peak fitness of 9), it will become unfit, or even
injured. A horse will not race well if its fitness is poor.
CLASS (C)
A horse's class is the key to success in Classic Trainer, as the
big prize money can only be earned in the higher class races. Class
can only be increased by winning a race of higher class than the
horse, but if you enter a race of too high a class, your horse may
extend itself too much and be injured. An injury will also reduce
the class of the horse! You may not enter a race where the class
is lower than that of the horse.
BUYING AND SELLING
You must maintain a stable of 5, so before you buy a new horse, you
must sell one of your current steeds. You may just be fed up with
one, or it may be necessary if none of them can run 14 furlongs!
THE DERBY
The derby takes place in the last week of each season; in order to
have a chance of winning, you will need a class 9 horse at peak
fitness, capable of winning at 14 furlongs - and don't forget to
keep enough in the bank for each entry fee!
HINTS
Don't expect to win the derby in the first season! You will need
plenty of cash to keep the stable running, so it will probably be
necessary to borrow money (don't leave it too late!) and place a
few bets (maximum bet £5000) to keep your head above water in the
early part of the game. Each horse has its preferred going, which
can effect its performance.

Notes from Steve Bye
Classic Trainer was my first ever complete program on any computer, so as
you can guess it is pretty dire, (remember you first effort!) but, amazingly
a LOT of people enjoyed playing it at the time. I do not know the final
sales figures for this game alone but the six games I released through
GTI together sold in five figure amounts.
I played Trainer for the first time in years today and I suppose it does
has something that makes you want to keep playing, as all Speccy games
seemed to at one time.
If you have played Trainer you must of surely noticed the font I used in the
game? At the time I thought I was really clever changing the system default
font to my own char set, it was done using UDG's and each character was
designed on grid paper by hand and then converted to decimal numbers and
then poked in the UDG area with a simple For-Next loop.
As I said, at the time I thought it was great, for me it was an achievment
to suss it out, BUT, I forgot to notice that it was the most awful, ugliest,
disguting, gut-wrenching, eye bleeding, shite font one is ever likely to see
on any computer anywhere. So my apologese for that!
There are cheats in Trainer, but I can't remeber what they are.
All my games have a cheat where you type in a word at an input, so don't
waste your time pressing all the keys. If you suss it out let me know.
If you break into the listing let me know how. I know there is away, I
left a backdoor in there somewhere but I can't remember.
I am getting old you see.
Anyway, I would like to say big thanx to Andy for doing the Snap and the Docs
cheers m8, or these games would of just rotted away in the back of my
cupboard and never come back to haunt you lot :-)
Steve Bye, Sept 96
