  78.     I do huge backups onto floppy disks (yes, floppy disks), and it
  79. takes me a lot of time.  I tried other backup programs such as Commodore's
  80. supplied HDBackup, MRBackup, and a demo version of Ami-Back, but they were
  81. slow, inefficient with compression, didn't work on two disk drives, had bugs
  82. and forced you to insert disks 1 to 65 to restore the file on the last disk.
  83. And alas, they were English-speaking only.
  84.  
  85.     ABackup is very fast, easy to use, has a nice GUI, and is very
  86. flexible.  It has many features, some of which are not found in the other
  87. backup programs I have used.
  88.  
  89.     - Ability to backup physically on any disk drive (DF0:, DF1:, DF2:,
  90.       ...)  or to a file (e.g., your Syquest, TAPE:, ...).  More than one
  91.       disk drive may be used during the same backup (e.g., sequential
  92.       backup on DF0: and DF1:).
  93.  
  94.     - Ability to select internal compression (compress-like).
  95.  
  96.     - Ability to select which files NOT to compress, based on their
  97.       filename extensions (e.g., .lha, .jpg, ...).
  98.  
  99.     - Compatibility with XPK compression external libraries.  I think
  100.       this is feature is unique to ABackup.

  102.     - Ability to select files for incremental backups via date, file
  103.       protections, and so on.
  104.  
  105.     - Ability to select which files to restore before restoring.

  107.     - Automatic formatting of the backup disks before use (see BUGS).

  110.       requested to insert another one, and the backup continues.

  123.     ABackup has a nice GUI; however, it may also be used from the CLI for
  124. automated backups/restoring.

  126.     I have used ABackup for approximately 8 months, doing a full backup
  127. each month and incremental backups each week, and the program works well.

  130. DOCUMENTATION
  131.  
  132.     The program comes with English and French documentation in an ASCII
  133. file on disk.  The documentation covers all menu items, gadgets and CLI
  134. commands.  It is easy to read.  It also comes with specially formatted
  135. documentation to use in ADoc's hypertext-like system.

  138. DISLIKES
  139.  
  140.     It is currently not possible to backup non AmigaDOS partitions, such
  141. as A-MAX for example.  Also, there is no support for multi-disk-drive
  142. restores; you can only RESTORE from one of the drives, unlike with the
  143. BACKUP command.

  146. COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS
  147.  
  148.     ABackup is largely superior to HDBackup for compression quality,
  149. speed, ease-of-use, reliability (you don't have to restart the backup from
  150. the beginning if something goes wrong, and you are not obliged to traverse
  151. all disks to find the file you want to restore).  If the disk catalog gets
  152. destroyed, you may _reconstruct_ it.  The internal compression is sufficient
  153. for all applications; however, XPK compatibility allows for special options
  154. (hyperfast compression, encryption, etc.).  The XPK compatibility and the
  155. secondary task for I/O both seem to be be unique among backup utilities.

  158. BUGS
  159.  
  160.     The last version I tried had no serious bugs.  It only had some minor
  161. glitches I already reported to the author. For example, if you use
  162. non-formatted floppy disks for backup, sometimes it can't format them.
  163. However, you normally quickly recover from this, and this does not stop the
  164. current backup.
  165.  
  166.     Most bugs from previous releases were corrected rather quickly.  My
  167. suggestions were also taken in account very seriously, and some of them were
  168. adopted.
  169.  
  170.     The author of ABackup reports that there is a problem with ABackup
  171. under AmigaDOS release 3.0, which I do not have.  A temporary fix is to use
  172. the NOTASK option.
  173.

  175. VENDOR SUPPORT
  176.  
  177.     It is not only possible to make suggestions, but also they are often
  178. taken into account very quickly, and added in the next release.  For example,
  179. a friend of mine had a problem with a backup:  he couldn't find the last disk
  180. which contains the catalog.  The author made a new version in less than one
  181. week that supported catalog reconstruction.

  197.     Reliability:    9 out of 10 (had some problems when backing up to
  198.             non-formatted disks)
  199.  
  200.     Rapidity:    9 out of 10 (very fast, even on 68000, except with
  201.             internal compression; with XPK it's sometimes faster.)
  202.  
  203.     Ease-of-use:    8 out of 10 (easy-to-understand clicking and
  204.             selection; however, restoring from ONE drive is
  205.             painful)
  206.  
  207.     GUI:        9 out of 10 (does not use standard file requester
  208.             under 2.04)
  209.  
  210.     Support:    10 out of 10 (my wishes were almost all fulfilled)
