Industrialization started at independence in 1960 and has successfully been concentrated on manufacturing of the domestic raw materials.
|RHistory:|N Before colonization the inner parts belonged to the Mali realm, while the coastal area was split in many small nations. The first French colonizers came to the coast 1687, but the actual colonization started in the 19th century. By 1882 the French had conquered the whole nation which was declared a French dependency in 1889.
From 1904 a part of the French West Africa.
Independency in 1960. Felix Houphouet-Boigny was the first president and he has been reelected every fifth year since then. Only one political party is allowed.
Stable political development, but in an uprising 1990 students demanded that the president should resign and that more political parties should be allowed.
