  8.  The program on this disk is in fact a
  9. utility that allows many more colours
  10. than you would think are possible.
  11.  If you register you will receive two
  12. different versions (v2 and v3). Version 
  13. 2 is a half meg version and version 3
  14. requires 1 meg ram.
  15.  Photochrome allows 4096 colours on ANY
  16. ST to be displayed at once or up to
  17. 32000 colours on an STE.
  18.  Version 2 is the same as version 3,
  19. apart from being unable to load Gif
  20. files (used on the PC). So for this
  21. review I will concentrate on version 3.
  22.  Upon loading the program, you are
  23. greeted with an easy to understand menu
  24. screen, you just click on the screen you
  25. want converted. These can be:
  26.  
  27.  TGA - 24 bit colour screen.
  28.  RAW - more of the same.
  29.  IFF - used extensively on the Amiga.
  30.  GIF - used on the PC.
  31.  RGB - used by VIDI digitiser.

  34.  The above formats can be converted to:
  35.  
  36.  Spec 512 - used by Spectrun 512 art
  37. package.
  38.  Spec 4096 - Same as above but for STE
  39. owners.
  40.  Photochrome - up to 32000 colours on 
  41. the STE.
  42.  PCS HAM - 4096 colours on any ST.

  44.  As well as the normal Spectrum mode,
  45. there is an extended mode, this saves
  46. the pictures using extra colours because
  47. when a normal Spectrum picture is saved
  48. the mouse colour and background colour
  49. are not used, with the extended Spectrum
  50. mode they are.

  52.  Upon registering, you are sent loads of
  53. example pictures, two versions of the
  54. program, zip archive and various picture
  55. converters. Also, you will receive STOS
  56. source code, which will allow you to
  57. display the pictures in STOS.
  58.  The author asks for a fee between two
  59. and five pounds for registration, this
  60. is really good value. The quality of the
  61. pictures is excellent, they have to be
  62. seen to be believed. In fact, I compared
  63. the GIF files with those on the AMIGA
  64. and the ones on the ST are much better.
  65.  Also IFF pictures look identical, if
  66. not better.
  67.  There is a possibiliy of version 4 and
  68. Photochrome Paint if there is a lot of
  69. feedback, so register today you will not
  70. be disappointed.
