Subject: Piracy of DOOM II does hurt ... don't try to feel better

Summary: buying it is not a complete redemption

All of you who say "If you buy a copy after getting a pirate copy, it's ok!"
and "I just want to check it out before buying it!" and "People are just using
pirated copies because they can't wait for the real release!" are really
missing a major point here. Those who pirate software and distribute it are
immature, scum-sucking, a**holes, and you are promoting their work. Don't
say to me (and the rest of the net) that you didn't pirate it, you got it
from a friend (or God, in one case), and are just playing it. By running
the game you are doing just what the pirates want, by giving a copy to a
friend you are furthering their malice. There is no such thing as innocent
using of pirated software. In the "real" world you can be arrested for
receiving stolen goods, even if you didn't steal them. The same principle
applies here.
Don't fool yourselves by saying "I'm going to buy it, so what's the harm?"
The previous argument aside, for every ONE of you who do buy it, there
will be TEN or more who don't, especially in a pirate distribution network.
If you are against piracy, and support iD's efforts, DON"T PLAY THE PIRATED
VERSION. If you refuse to accept a copy, maybe the person who would have
given it to you might think twice about giving it to people.
As for those who want to "try it out", that's what the shareware version
is for, isn't it? It's the same engine as 1.666. The difference is the
new levels, one new weapon, and a few new bad guys. I think that that is
a reasonable difference to have between a shareware version and a commercial
version.
Finally, those who say they can't wait for the real release ... get a life,
and get some backbone. As a child psychologist I can tell you that eight-
year-olds have better delay of gratification skills than you have. You can
wait, just like me and the rest of the world, until Oct 10 or a week
earlier (through GT).
I do not wart to flame everyone who has a copy with this post. I just want
to see an end to the three defenses cited at the beginning of this post. I
think that they are not valid. Please think twice about using the pirated
version. If, after you've read this post, you decide to still use a pirated
copy, that's okay with me. It's your choice, it's a free country. Just don't
fool yourselves with the excuses above.
Thank you for your time.
Have fun Doom'ing, on whatever version you have.
