One reason that Doom is important is because it revitalizes the concept
of "shareware". A private enterprise with few resources is able to
spread its product to hundreds of thousands with tens of thousands
actually plunking down cash after sampling the "teaser". In a time
when the software industry (and quite possibly the software retailing
industry) is turning increasingly oligolopistic this restores one
of the original hopes of the PC revolution, easy entry markets will
be created that allow the small (and often dynamic) to go against the
large (and often stagnant). This is a positive direction for
"commercializationof the Internet".
