  17. One reason that Doom is important is because it revitalizes the concept
  18. of "shareware". A private enterprise with few resources is able to
  19. spread its product to hundreds of thousands with tens of thousands
  20. actually plunking down cash after sampling the "teaser".  In a time
  21. when the software industry (and quite possibly the software retailing
  22. industry) is turning increasingly oligolopistic this restores one 
  23. of the original hopes of the PC revolution,  easy entry markets will
  24. be created that allow the small (and often dynamic) to go against the
  25. large (and often stagnant).  This is a positive direction for
  26. "commercializationof the Internet".
