Realistically, they can bust your account, leaving you one less portal
into the Internet if this isn't your account (no big whoop) or if you're at
an EDU site, they can violate your civil rights while they browbeat you into
a confession. Doesn't matter whether it will ultimately be admissible
in court, they'll still do it. They did all sorts of interesting things
to a man named Jim Whitehead at Penn State when he posted a mostly
satirical diatribe called "Why killing a homosexual is like kicking
a stone"... The ACLU declined to rush to his defense either BTW... This
incident made it onto CNN and ultimately the tabloid talk shows...

No problem if you're hacking into this account. This would classify
you as clever enough to cover your tracks...

Agreed, this isn't going to close them down, but if anyone talks, a
few pirate BBSes might be folded... Only to be replaced within 48 hours
by alternate sources... It remains to be seen what kind of legal muscle
ID will attempt to use in this situation... Suffice to say if someone
decides to truly track you down, they will... It's just a question
of effort...

If the right smart people decide to track you, track you they will...
It's just that if it's more expensive to track you down than to tolerate
your conduct (whatever that may be, we're hypothetical here), they probably
won't. Make an ass of yourself (e.q. Hey guys, I just uploaded Doom II
to WUARCHIVE, INFANT2, UWP, and you can have it DCC RIGHT NOW!) and they'll
be at your front door within 48 hours.
The guy who posted about this getting old is right however...
I think I'm going to stop replying to these posts... If anyone feels
the burning need to argue with me, please email... Oh, and the
anonymous email is really boring, try being daring by using an
ID I can respond to, OK? Is that so much to ask for?
