Gee. Don't be ridiculous.
Being a book author myself, I'll tell you something you are probably well
aware of: in lots of countries, you have to pay a delivery for having/using
a photocopy machine.
In our country, approx. 30 % of the price of each single photocopy is
the charge for copying probably copyrighted material (dunno
about the US). Even the government pays millions as a lump sum to cover
use of copyrighted material in schools and universities.
There are additional laws, national and international payment regulations
and organisations established to allow for one single thing: make sure that
the copyright holder of any book, magazine or newspaper article or
scientific journal publication receives his share of the money payed
by everybody using a photocopy machine or library (I myself receive
small amout of money every year, for some books written eight years ago).
Imagine something like this applied to the software market! Imagine
everybody has to pay a few cents for each floppy, for each MB of
harddisk capacity, for each PC.
But if it had been as easy to pirate books as it is pirating software,
there would be a lot less pages, books, libraries to copy from.
