  17. I hope you saw the message announcing the availability of DEU 5.21 for Linux.
  18. This great job was done by Brad Hawthorne (u9c192@ugrad.cs.ubc.ca) and Sam
  19. Lantinga (slouken@cs.ucdavis.edu).   I won't include the original message here,
  20. but I would like to add a few things:
  21.  
  22. - I strongly suggest that you get the original (DOS) version of DEU 5.21 too.
  23.   Only the original version contains the demo WADs, the tutorial and full docs.
  24.   This has been done in order to save downloading time for experienced DEU users
  25.   who already have the demos from the original version.

  27. - The two official sites for distribution of DEU are:
  28.    * infant2.sphs.indiana.edu (Indiana, USA) in /pub/doom/deu
  29.    * ftp2.montefiore.ulg.ac.be (Belgium) in /pub/doom/deu
  30.   Since infant2 is currently unavailable, here are some mirror sites:
  31.    * ftp.uwp.edu (Wisconsin, USA) in /pub/games/id/home-brew/doom/deu
  32.    * ftp.cdrom.com (California, USA) in /pub/doom/deu
  33.    * ftp.iglou.com (Kentucky, USA) in doom/deu
  34.    * ftp.uni-erlangen.de (Germany) in /pub/pc/msdos/games/ID/doom-stuff/deu
  35.    * nctuccca.edu.tw (Taiwan) in /PC/games/doom/deu
  36.    * ftp.luth.se (Sweden) in /pub/msdos/games/doom/deu
  37.   There is also an experimental Linux site which distributes the Linux version
  38.   of DEU (but you will have to connect to the other sites to get the original
  39.   version with docs and demos):
  40.    * dewdrop.water.ca.gov (USA) in /pub/doom/deu-linux
  41.   This last site also contains lots of interesting stuff for Linux.

  43. - The names of the files containing the Linux version of DEU are:
  44.    * deu521linux.txt         - informations about this version of DEU
  45.    * deu521linux.src.tgz     - the sources of the program
  46.    * deu521linux.bin.tgz     - the pre-compiled program and libraries
  47.   Note: if your installation of Linux is non-standard, it is possible that
  48.   the binaries won't work.  This is why I advise you to always download the
  49.   sources of the program (the "src" package).

  51. - If you don't know how to extract the files from a ".tgz" or ".tar.gz" file,
  52.   here is how:
  53.      gunzip -c deu521linux.src.tgz | tar -xvf -  (using standard tar)
  54.   or:
  55.      tar -xzvf deu521linux.src.tgz               (using GNU tar)
  56.   If you only want to see what is in the archive before unpacking the files,
  57.   just replace "tar -xvf -" by "tar -tvf -".
  58.   Of course, this assumes that you have a working UN*X system...
  59.  
  60. - As Sam said in his message, please do not send mail to me about this version,
  61.   because I didn't work on that port.  Send your suggestions and congratulations
  62.   to them.  And don't flood them with questions about how to use DEU itself.
  63.   Please read the docs and the tutorial first.  If you still need some help, try
  64.   posting your questions on alt.games.doom or to some people who are not busy
  65.   adding more features to the program :-)  Thanks.
