1.2's LMP recording sucks for multiplayer LMPs, for that use 1.4-1.6.
For single player LMPs, use:
doom -devparm -record filename (no extension)
to play LMPs you must use the version to play that the LMP was recorded on:
doom -playdemo lmpname (no extionsion)
