Scott,
I say, what you do is make it as close to virtual reality as we can, but
only controller wise. That was probably impossible to understand, so I'll
explain again. You controll the marine like you're using VR, but you keep
the monitor, the speakers coming out of your sound card (not your video
helmet), etc.
What this would mean is that, say, to open a door, you would stick your
hand out and move it up (as though you were really lifting up the door).
To turn, you would turn your head, and to fire, you would have a little
toy gun which you pulled the trigger on.
In your previous message, you worried about synchronization (I think
that's spelled right, not sure). My solution for that is simple. The
entire control unit you are on senses how fast you are moving your head,
estimates that to walk or run speed for Doom, and so as not to confuse
you, rotates in the opposite direction of your head so that it takes you
the same amount of time to move in reality as it does in the game.
Now this brings me to the other problem, how to continue viewing the
screen after you've turned 180 degrees. As I said before, this whole
control unit rotates anyway, so you just have it rotate back once it
senses that you have stopped moving your head. This will be done quickly,
since so often, you need to spin around instantly. The other thing you
could do instead of this would be to put your moniter on the control unit
with you. But then you're getting awful close to Virtual Reality. Putting
the moniter on board the control unit would probably make a good deal of
people seasick whenever they used it, too, which means that you'll just
need to rely on the speed of the unit. (Hopefully, by now you've figured
out that ther is a chair on this thing, in addition to plenty of standing
room, for walking and running).
Now, as for walking and running, you have a little treadmill right where
your feet are. And again, for synchronization, it would sense your speed,
estimate, and then increase/decrease the resistance of the treadmill.
The last two things would be weapon switching and pausing/accessing the
menus. For weapon switching, the hand that does NOT have the gun would
have little controlls on the back side of it which would be like function
keys, the escape key, pause, etc. This means that it would have to come
as a right-handed controller, or a left handed controller. (I think of
these things-- I'm a lefty.)
Happy dreaming! (-:
