We had this same thing happen on IRIX 5.2. Our solution was just to put
sgixdoom in our games directory (which is in the PATH), then put everything
else in some shared Id directory (WADs, the sndserver, ...). Then set the
DOOMWADDIR variable to point at that Id directory. cd to $DOOMWADDIR and
run sgixdoom.

Hrm. Dunno. Maybe check out the X_CreateWindow man page, or send a fuller
error message?
