matt,
if you are going to spend that kind of money you should carefully
research your video decision. The Matrox is a great gui board as you
stated; however, it is abysmal is dos. How bad? It will make you system
run like a slower 486 playing doom. For example the matrox scores
~600cps in pcbench 8.0 when in a pci p90; my 'mere' 486/66 vlb, 8mb, with
a plain jane et4000, 1mb video card scores ~7000 cps. That is not a
typo! You should check out computer shopper for august; they do a
benchmark on the matrox is a p90.
Of course my et4000 sucks in windows, but I do not need windows all that
often, so I'm really hapy happy with my video performance. Check out the
ati turbo; it is supposedly the best all around card.
