Here's what I do:
There's an invulnerability sphere in that large room with all the
spectres. Once I've killed the spectres, I ready the rocket launcher,
then I grab that sphere. While I'm invulnerable I run like mad
through the next room, ignoring those three cacodemons, into the
poison pit (where the bridge that falls away below you is), around
that back corridor to grab the BFG-9000, then I make for the
teleporting entrance to the large L-shaped room with the cubbyholes
with the sargeants. I still have a few seconds of invulnerability
left when I hit the teleporter, during which I rocket-blast the
cacodemons and a few of the nearby sargeants. When I'm back to
normal, I finish off the last few sargeants with the shotgun, then I
go back and shoot those cacodemons I blew past earlier.
