I can't get DOOM to run over a serial connection between two computers.
As far as I can tell, I've done everything correctly. Could some kind
soul help me out here?
I'm trying to connect my 486 DX2 66 /12megs RAM desktop with my wife's
486 sx something or other /8megs RAM notebook - each connected over
COM2 (my COM2 is a 25 pin and hers is a 9 pin, but that shouldn't matter).
The desktop is setup for a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 sound card while the notebook
just uses the PC speaker.
Both computers can run DOOM with no trouble at all by themselves, the
problem is trying to get them to run the game together (I really have a
need to blow away a few friends when they come over to visit instead of
each of us taking turns on the desktop and watching one another get
wasted by all the critters).
I start the program on both computers by using setup. I select the serial
cable option and set both for the same settings (usually the default for
the game and COM2 for the connection).
I hit F10 on both machines and wait for the fun . . . but it don't come. :-(
Instead, I get the following on my screen:
-------------------------
DOOM SERIAL DEVICE DRIVER
-------------------------
Looking for UART at port 0x2f8, irq3
UART is an 8250
Attempting to connect across serial link, press escape to abort.
And that's it. I don't have a klue as to what that means but the screen
never changes. I've let it sit like that for as long as thirty minutes
at a time - to see if it's just a slow program or somesuch - but to no
avail.
The guy at the computer store says the cable I bought should be okay for
what I want to do. My wife got the cable for me as my Chinese sucks.
Is there a special make of cord that needs to be used as the null modem
cord? My wife picked up a gender adapter for the desktop which says
RS232 on it. To use LapLink, I connect the two computers via the LPT1
printer ports and haven't had problems, but the DOOM setup says you have
to use the COMM ports.
I know my COM2 ports are okay as that's what my wife and I hook our modems
to when we use email - like now. :-)
I am at wits end. Anyone have any ideas on what's going wrong here? I really
want to run the game with both computers going at the same time.
Any help would be appreciated.
