  6. GENERAL NOTES

  9. WhereIsIt? was designed with a single goal in mind - to create an easy-to-use,
  10. but powerful media catalog program, made to make our lives easier. Familiar
  11. and simplified user interface, extensive search capabilities and archive file
  12. support, combined with powerful report generator and compact, but rich in
  13. details database, all that should bring you the ultimate tool to handle your
  14. software collection.

  16. WhereIsIt? is a shareware software. See ORDER.TXT for more information on how
  17. to register this program. Be sure to read carefully the LICENSE.TXT file
  18. before using the program. The unregistered version imposes some limitations to
  19. the user, which are removed by registering the program. More information about
  20. these limitations can be found later in this document.

  23. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  26. - Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 (or higher), or Windows 98 (tested with
  27.   build 1691)
  28. - At least 8 MB of RAM is strongly recommended, 16 MB or more preferred.
  29. - 5.0 MB free hard disk space for program installation and catalogs.

  50. Where is it? supports any media type Windows can use, including diskettes,
  51. CD-ROMs, removable disks like iomega Zip, hard disk, network drives etc.
  52. It will recognize and collect useful data for most of them, too. Also, it
  53. is compatible with all Windows-supported file systems, including FAT, FAT32,
  54. and NTFS.

  58. Logical organization of databases, based on one or more catalogs. Each
  59. catalog can easily be transferred as a single file to another computer, a
  60. friend, a public forum...  Small catalog-file size, with approximate usage
  61. of 2 MB for 70.000 files and folders (that's about 10 fully filed CD-ROMs).
  62. Internal database structure optimized for very efficient access and small
  63. total size. Single-file, transferable catalog storage makes sharing your
  64. data easy.

  68. Fast and easy access to every item's detailed properties, from wherever you
  69. are. Want to get item's description? Just leave mouse pointer on it for a
  70. moment, description will popup as a tool-tip!.

  74. Detailed info on every object in the database (files, folders, disks,
  75. catalogs,...) each capable of accepting up to 4000 characters of description
  76. text. Each file or folder can have assigned user-defined category or up to
  77. three flags.

  79. Importing descriptions, help with describing items

  81. Auto-importing and exporting descriptions from 4DOS/NDOS, FILE_ID.DIZ,
  82. FILES.BBS, 00INDEX.TXT,... description files, even if they are compressed
  83. inside zip, arj,... archive files! It can also import data about some
  84. special file types, like EXE programs and system libraries descriptions,
  85. CD-ROM audio tracks, WAV and MP3 file info etc. There is also a Description
  86. Assistant, interactive tool to help you describe your folders, based on
  87. special (custom defined) description files like FILE_ID.DIZ or read-me
  88. files.

  92. Handling of most compressed file formats on media scan, including ZIP, ARJ,
  93. RAR, CAB, LHA/LZH, TAR, ARC, ZOO, GZ, SFX... Compressed archive files can be
  94. presented as folders, showing their content. Archive files can be extracted
  95. right out from WhereIsIt? to any folder, and a file compressed inside archive
  96. file can be viewed or launched with associated program with one click!

  100. Powerful multi-threaded searching, with detailed settings on what to search
  101. for, where to search and how to search. Searching for duplicate items is
  102. there, too, as well as analyzing how data has changed since last
  103. cataloguing, or checking if older (or newer) versions of files are present
  104. somewhere in the catalog.

  106. Amazing report generator with print preview for summarizing your catalogs

  108. Adjustable and powerful report generator adds a final professional touch to
  109. your catalog collection. Export your data to ASCII file, print on your
  110. printer, or send by fax using the Microsoft Fax, after previewing it on

  121. MULTI-LANGUAGE SUPPORT
  122. ======================

  124. This program supports selecting one of prepared languages to be used in
  125. program's user interface, and even preparing language files for currently
  126. unsupported languages (read more about this in program's help file).

  128. If, for any reason, you would like to switch back to default English language,
  129. and are unable to do so in program because you can't understand or correctly
  130. display currently selected language, you can run the program from command line
  131. with this special parameter:

  133. WhereIsIt.exe /English

  135. This will effectively run the program with English language, ignoring current
  136. language settings.

  139. UNREGISTERED VERSION LIMITATIONS
  140. ================================
  141.  
  142. Unregistered version of WhereIsIt? has build-in some limitations in order to
  143. encourage registering this software. All of the following limitations are
  144. removed when program is registered using given serial number and registration
  145. code. For more information on how to register please read the ORDER.TXT file.
  146.  
  147. - Catalog capacity is limited to total of 2 GB data storage, You will not be
  148.   able to add more data in the catalog, if the total sum of all media
  149.   capacities in the catalog already exceeds this limit. If you want to add
  150.   more data, you will have to open a new catalog.
  151.  
  152. - Only one catalog can be opened at the time. If you would like to work with
  153.   another catalog, you must first close the current one.
  154.  
  155. - Auto-loading catalogs on program startup is disabled. Registered users can
  156.   setup a list of catalogs to automatically load when program is starting.
  157.  
  158. - All reports will include a visible message saying they were generated with
  159.   unregistered version.
  160.  
  161. - Tips on program startup can not be disabled in the unregistered version. The
  162.   first tip will always remind you that you are working with an unregistered
  163.   program.

  166. REGISTRATION BENEFITS
  167. =====================

  169. After receiving the license fee, as stated in ORDER.TXT file, each registered
  170. user in entitled to:
  171.  
  172. - Personal registration code, to unlock current and all future versions of
  173.   the program.
  174. - Optional program delivery on 3.5" disks, for additional payment of $5 USD.
  175. - Free technical support via e-mail for a period of six months.
  176. - Clean conscience if using program for more than 14 days.
  177.  
  178. Registration benefits can be suspended if registered user had violated
  179. license agreement, for example by distributing his personal registration
  180. data to other unlicensed users.

  183. DISTRIBUTION
  184. ============

  186. Evaluation versions of WhereIsIt? are distributed as Shareware. This means
  187. that users are encouraged, subject to restrictions described in the License
  188. Agreement, to share copies of this program with friends, associates and
  189. bulletin boards. Please remember that if you use this software you are
  190. required to pay the registration fee of $30 as described in the License
  191. Agreement (LICENSE.TXT).
