Software Motion-Video Support in OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11
=======================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11 support the ability to play video and
synchronized audio, and does not need special video hardware.
Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 (MMPM/2) supports the Audio Video
Interlaced (AVI) movie format using the Ultimotion or Indeo software
motion video decompressor.
RESOLUTION
Ultimotion offers several advantages over other available software
video technologies.
Video Adapters
--------------
Ultimotion movies can be played on any OS/2 system that has an SVGA XGA
video adapter, with 256 or 65,536 color capability. Ultimotion can play
back on VGA systems, although video quality is reduced when mapped to
16 colors.
Minimal System Support
----------------------
This refers to playing a movie on a minimal system (such as a 386, 25
MHz system) directly from a CD, with 150 KB per second or less.
Ultimotion supports movies playing at 15 frames per second with a size
of 320x240 pixels, which is one-quarter screen size on VGA or SVGA
systems. This is four times the resolution of other software
motion-video technologies.
Scalability
-----------
Depending on the playback system, Ultimotion movies can be created with
up to 30 frames per second, or at full-screen size, 640x480. All movies
are created in a high-depth direct color space. If the playback system
cannot support the movie as created, Ultimotion technology
automatically scales the movie to match the system capabilities.
If the processor in the playback machine cannot support the frame rate
of the movie, Ultimotion scales the video down to match the processor
speed. The audio plays back at the speed it was originally created, and
the video stays synchronized with the audio.
You can scale the movie larger or smaller during the playback by
changing the window size directly, or by selecting options from menus.
The Ultimotion decompressor plays the movie with 65,536, 256, or 16
colors, depending on the video adapter present in the system. With
Ultimotion, there is no need to create separate movies with different
numbers of colors; one movie covers all target playback systems.
