  5.         AFTER INSTALL BLANK DESKTOP AND NO SYSTEM ACTIVITY
  6. ==================================================================

  8.         DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  9.  
  10.         After Installation and reboot the user gets a blank desktop
  11.         with no system activity
  12.  
  13.  
  14.         SUMMARY OF RESOLUTIONS:
  15.  
  16.         1.  If using an ATI Ultra, or Ultra Graphics video card:
  17.                 a.  Ensure the ATI board is setup as an 8514 PRIMARY
  18.                     display.
  19.                 b.  Check the CONFIG.SYS for DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
  20.                 c.  Contact ATI for updated ROM chip.
  21.  
  22.         2.  Run CHKDSK
  23.  
  24.         3.  Check CONFIG.SYS for duplicate SET USER_INI, and SET
  25.             SYSTEM_INI statements.
  26.         4.  Set video card to 8 bits and move it to an 8-bit slot.
  27.  
  28.         5.  If the above is not applicable or does not work, remake
  29.             the desktop.
  30.  
  31.         DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  32.  
  33.         1.  The ATI 8514 Ultra, or Ultra Graphics.
  34.                 a. These boards MUST be set up as an 8514 PRIMARY display.
  35.                 b. The correct DEVICE statement in the CONFIG.SYS should
  36.                     read DEVICE=X:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
  37.                     It will sometimes install as VVGA.SYS This must be changed.
  38.                 c. The older ATI ROM chips return the incorrect
  39.                    monitor ID when queried by OS/2.
  40.  
  41.         2.  Run CHKDSK
  42.                 a.  Insert the Installation Disk in drive A:
  43.                 b.  Turn on the computer.  If already on, execute a proper
  44.                      shutdown and when prompted press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  45.                 c.  When prompted insert Disk 1 and press Enter.
  46.                 d.  When the "Welcome to OS/2" screen is displayed, hit the
  47.                     ESC key to Cancel and an A: prompt will appear.
  48.                 e.  Insert Disk 2 and type CHKDSK C: /F and press Enter.
  49.                 f.  If errors are displayed, rerun the CHKDSK command until
  50.                    no errors are found.
  51.                 g.  Run this command on all drive letters that exist.
  52.         3.  Check the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS for duplicate INI statements.
  53.                 a.  Boot from DOS or a DOS BOOTABLE DISKETTE.
  54.                 b.  Open an editor session.
  55.                 c.  Open the CONFIG.SYS.
  56.                 d.  Locate the SET USER_INI, and SET SYSTEM_INI
  57.                     statements.
  58.                 e.  Scroll through the CONFIG.SYS and make sure they are
  59.                     not repeated. If they are, delete the second
  60.                     occurrence.
  61.                 f.  Save any changes and exit the editor.
  62.         4.  Set the Video card to 8 bit mode and place in an 8-bit
  63.              slot.  Consult the documentation that came with the card
  64.              on the procedure to do this.
  65.  
  66.         5.  Remake the desktop.
  67.                 a.  Restart the computer using the OS/2 Installation
  68.                     Diskette, then when prompted insert Diskette 1.
  69.                 b.  When the "Welcome To OS/2" screen appears, press the ESC
  70.                      key to cancel the installation.
  71.                 c.  At the A:> prompt type C: then press Enter.
  72.                 d.  Type CD \OS2 the press Enter.
  73.                 e.  Type ERASE OS2.INI then press Enter.
  74.                 f.  Type MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC then press Enter.
  75.                 g.  Type ERASE OS2SYS.INI then press Enter.
  76.                 h.  Type MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC then press Enter.
  77.                 i.  Delete the hidden file WP ROOT. SF in the startable
  78.                    partition.
  79.                 1) For FAT file systems
  80.                 i. Type ATTRIB -S -H WP?ROOT.?SF then press Enter.
  81.                 ii. Type DEL WP?ROOT.?SF then press Enter.
  82.                 2) For HPFS file systems
  83.                 i. Type ATTRIB -S -H "WP ROOT. SF" press Enter.
  84.                 ii. Type DEL "WP ROOT. SF" then press Enter.
  85.                 iii.  Delete the desktop
  86.                 1) For FAT, CD to OS!2_2.0_D and delete this directory
  87.                     and all subdirectories under it.
  88.                 2) For HPFS, CD to "OS!2 2.0 DESKTOP" and delete this
  89.                    directory and all subdirectories under it.
  90.             NOTE: If MAKEINI has been run before, or ALT-F1 was
  91.                   used, other desktops may have been created.
  92.                   Delete ALL desktops.
  93.                   (e.g. OS!2_21.0_D is another desktop.)
