JUNE 28, 1994
Today, IBM is initiating the IBM OS/2 LAN Server Rel. 4.0* beta
program. Orders for the beta program will be accepted starting June 30,
1994 and the packages will be shipped beginning the first half of
July 1994. OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 is easily upgradeable from it's
previous version, OS/2 LAN Server 3.0. The Beta program is available
to commercial customers, developers and resellers. Beta details and
ordering information are listed below.
IBM is also offering today a LAN Server upgrade, and two specially
priced OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 client server bundles. This specially
priced offering makes OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 available at substantial
savings, and also allows customers up to 50% discounts when they
upgrade to OS/2 LAN Server 4.0. Call 1-800-3IBMOS2 for details on
the upgrade offering and client server bundles.
In addition IBM is extending Program Service for OS/2 LAN Server 3.0
through December 1995.
With these offerings customers can invest with confidence in LAN
Server 3.0 today and be assured of an attractive upgrade path to
LAN Server 4.0.
LAN Server 4.0 Beta details:
----------------------------
The LAN Server 4.0 beta answers key user needs by offering improved
installation, usability, configuration, systems administration, and
publications.
Chief among the new features is a graphical user interface (GUI)
designed to provide installation with few end-user interactions.
The beta's object-oriented, drag-and-drop GUI also enables system
administrators to easily set up users, groups, and associated
resources.
The new smaller, faster DOS/Windows** requestor has a GUI which offers
an alternative to the command line for functions such as
installation, changing passwords and connecting to network resources.
The DOS/Windows** requester now provides peer services for sharing
resources including file and print with other requestors without
server involvement. Users can perform all functions from the command
line, the GUI, or the API.
The LAN Server 4.0 beta provides support for Networked Dynamic Data
Exchange (DDE) and clipboard for OS/2 and Windows clients in both the
entry and advanced versions.
Improved performance is available in the NetBIOS API for TCP/IP.
In addition, the TCP/IP stacks and support for NetBIOS over TCP/IP are
now included with LAN Server. This eliminates the need to purchase
separate TCP/IP packages.
Interoperability with NTAS** and Windows for Workgroups** is improved
by removing length restrictions on domains, names, user IDs and machine
names.
In addition to the features mentioned above, which are common to both
Advanced and Entry versions, LAN Server Advanced will offer the
following improvements.
- Enforced disk space limits
- Better performance in environments with very large numbers of active
users
- Pentium*** optimization
- Improved problem determination/problem source identification
