  15. latest news about OS/2 friendly motherboards.  What are the latest thinking on

  17. out for? Are there, or will there be in the next few months, any good price
  18. points for non-bleeding edge motherboards/cpu's? Where to shop?

  38. ADSL modems are no problem (in and of themselves).  They "connect" to
  39. your computer via a network card (NIC).  Your Telco *might* supply one,
  40. but be careful, you will need a NIC with OS/2 drivers (NDIS) available.
  41.  Most 3com NICS have OS/2 drivers available, but you might have to buy
  42. your own if the Telco doesn't supply one that will work.  MPTS will
  43. install and configure your NIC fairly easily.  Just set up TCP/IP to
  44. look for a DHCP server for IP info, etc.
  45.  
  46. Your biggest potential problem is "logging on" to the ADSL network
  47. (and ISP).  My Telco works fine, because they use a web page for
  48. login/logout and all that's required is Java support.  I have heard
  49. that some ADSL suppliers require you to run  "login client" software,
  50. this is usually a Windows or Mac based application.  This can present
  51. BIG problems for OS/2 (and even UNIX) users.  
  52.  
  53. Good luck, all of the important decisions are out of your hands.   
  54. All I can say for sure is that it *might* work out OK, I'm using Warp
  55. 4 w/fp12 and an ADSL (Cisco 675) "modem" here, and I love it!

  187. That's a "logical" drive.  If you try and change to it,  you'll get prompted
  188. to insert a new disk in the machine for B:...
  189.  
  190. Look at it this way,  if they didn't do that,  you couldn't do a copy
  191. operation from one floppy to another of the same size.  This is either copying 
  192. files,  one or several,  or copying a whole disk.

  241. Take the CD out and put it inside your case and go back to the 1520 until you
  242. can swing a 1545 or any of the older Future Domains. Stick with the adaptec if 
  243. you want to migrate to a better adaptec in the future. Moving from FD to
  244. Adaptec will cause reformatting to set things straight as they use different
  245. head/cyl/sect translations.

  261. I've run across a wyse keyboard that uses a small 4 conductor telco 
  262. style connector (don't have a clue as to what it's called)  both at
  263. the  keyboard end and at the motherboard end. Does anyone know of a 
  264. telco-to-ps/2 (or AT) adapter for this thing. The keyboard is kind of 
  265. nice and has a small footprint ... I'd like to use it if possible. TIA

  294. I would go for an AOpen AX59Pro with an Amd K6-3-lot's Mhz:-)
  295. Amd works much better with OS/2 than Intel does.

  339. Because most OS's see a single floppy drive as both A and B.
  340. You can copy files to B by inserting a diskette into the single drive
  341. and asking for a copy to it. The OS will ask you to insert a diskette.
  342.  
  343. If copying from A to B it reads into memory what you want to copy from A
  344. and then asks you to insert a diskette into drive B which is still the
  345. same drive.

  374. Doesn't matter.  This is standard with almost all PC's.  It allows you
  375. to do file copying from one diskette to another with only one physical
  376. device.  You'll discover the same is true under most other operating
  377. systems as well.

  407.  I _DID_ get OS2FAT32 working, so I can now utilize WIN98's FAT32 drives
  408.  with OS/2. As I progress with OS/2, most of those FAT32 drives will be
  409.  converted to HPFS.

  411.  Now, if I could just get WIN98 to read HPFS drives, life would be much
  412.  simpler.

  414.  I need to "share" drives for files, until I get Adept setup and running
  415.  correctly. After that, there won't be much need for anything other than
  416.  the single WIN98 Boot Drive.

  521. You could put it to your hub, but you will only have one IP address, so only
  522. one system can use the DSL while the others can't.  Then there is the possible 
  523. security issues of the possibility of your entire network being exposed to the 
  524. outside.

  552. Recommended sound chipsets: Crystal Semiconductor chipset or Aureal chipset
  553. I'm using an ISA Crystal based soundcard, I've heard good things about the PCI 
  554. Aureal chipset.
  555.  
  556. Remember: for PCI soundcards a different chipset is needed than for the ISA
  557. soundcards (because of the different type of systembus I think), PCI chipsets
  558. and PCI soundcards have no plain DOS support.
  559.  
  560. Avoid PCI Creative Labs soundcards, they have no OS/2 drivers.

  619. I have one of those lying around here somewhere.  The PC keyboard interface
  620. only has four used pins, so it's possible to make an adapter, though I'm
  621. not certain that the WYSE keyboard will work properly.

  623. The PS/2 plug has these pinouts:

  626. 2 - Not used
  627. 3 - Ground
  628. 4 - +5 volts
  629. 5 - Clock
  630. 6 - Not used

  632. I don't know the pinout of the WYSE connector, but it'd probably be a good
  633. bet to assume the same order (you'll need to use trial and error, if it
  634. isn't).

  636. To make the adapter, you'll want a RJ-11 union.  It'll look like the
  637. opening of a telephone jack on opposite ends.  Make sure you get one with a
  638. seam across the middle, so you can pull it apart with each end intact.
  639. Snip the wires off of the one end - the other end will be for the keyboard.
  640.  
  641. Next you'll need a segment of PS/2 cable (mouse or keyboard - they're both
  642. the same).  Needless to say, it needs to be a male end (with the pins).
  643.  
  644. You'll need to associate the wire colors with the pin number, using
  645. whatever you have available - something to send a current through the wire,
  646. and let you know when you've completed the circuit with the correct pin.  A
  647. multimeter will accomplish this.
  648.  
  649. Then connect the appropriate PS/2 connector wires to the RJ-11 union wires.
  650. When you match them up correctly (if that's possible), the keyboard will
  651. work.  When you have them correct, solder the wires, and put a bunch of
  652. electrical tape around them.
  653.  
  654. Or, you could look for an adapter in the store, which probably doesn't
  655. exist.
