Subj: Locked Files Help
HELP! I seem to have made my OS/2 system unbootable. I upgraded some
software and I was told to shutdown and re-boot. On re-boot OS/2 said
"Processing Locked Files", then it said "Locked file processing completed".
At this point OS/2 just sat there with a blinking cursor for a long time, I
finally gave up and pressed reset button. Now everytime I try to boot OS/2,
after the logo goes away it just sits there with "The locked file device
driver is loaded" on the screen. Does anybody have a clue how to get past
this point, so I can try to get OS/2 going again.
I have boot floppies and I can look at or edit my config.sys, but I don't know
how to procede. Any help will be appreciated, TIA.

I have run into this a few times when I have installed two programs that both
needed to process locked files consecutively without rebooting inbetween. In
my case the locked file processor seems to try and load twice. To fix it I've
booted to a command prompt and remed out the lines that load the locked file
processor. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the file that runs the
locked file processor. But perhaps you can find it in your config.sys anyway.
It's a run= line if I remember correctly. Hope this helps at least a little.

Sorry for the somewhat incomplete previous answer. There are two lines to
look for one loads IBMCSFLK.SYS and the other runs IBMCSFLK.EXE. It's
probable that they both exist twice in your config.sys. Rem out one set (the
two lines will be next to each other). In my case this has always worked in
the same situation as yours. But that's only been twice.

Thank you! Thank you!
You sent me off in the right direction. It turns out that the
filenames were IBMLANLK.SYS and .EXE (because it was network stuff I
was worknig on), but you were right, there was TWO sets of them from
different installs.
I managed to successfully set up my OS/2 system to work with my new
ADSL phone line (and cute little Cisco modem/router) and NIC card, and
I got cocky and decided to upgrade Netscape to v 4.61 and install
Plug-ins, AND install the latest Java RT. That's what I get for
getting over-confident, I guess.
Anyway, back to the point, I REMed out the first pair of IBMLANLK
files and re-booted. OS/2 then succesfully processed the second lock
files list and everything worked fine. Thanks again for you quick
help.
TTYL, BYE!
Don

Subj: ADSL with OS/2
I would be interested in your experience with running your ADSL hookup with
OS/2. ADSL is supposed to get to my area by December and while I can run it
through an NT server I would mulch prefer to run it on my OS/2 machine. I am
quite sure that Bell Atlantic will give me no support for an OS/2 hookup. I
appreciate any pointers that you have time to pass along. Thank you.

Actually, it was a lot easier than I had feared it would be. ADSL
(and cable modems) hook to your computer through a standard 10BASET
ethernet connection, so the first concern is that you either must have
(or the TELCO must provide) a Network Card (NIC) with OS/2 support.
You can run MPTS and see a list of NICs with "built-in" support. My
TELCO (Cincinnati Bell) supplied a 3Com Ethernet XL PCI card and OS/2
drivers are available from 3Com.

That's my experience. The phone company has no interrest in dealing
with anything but Windoze or Macs. I let them set up my laptop (which
runs Win95, and already has a NIC built into the docking station).
The actual setup is easy, just use MPTS to configure (or add if
necessary) your NIC and "attach" IBM TCP/IP to it. Then check the box
that says "Use DHCP" instead of inserting IP addresses. You will have
to insert DNS addresses, default gateway address, etc. because of the
way OS/2's TCPIP setup works, but OS/2 will properly ignore your
settings when it contacts the DHCP server when you boot. After that
it's pretty easy.
On the system here the Network, and ISP logons are done through a
browser page. It may or may not be different where you are. That's why
I let them set up my Win95 computer. Also I had a minor problem
because their main page uses some "flash" graphics (and there in NO
OS/2 plugin for this), I had to call their tech support and get the URL
for the separate login page. This login page requires JAVA but nothing
else so OS/2 browsers work OK here.
P.S. ADSL is wonderful, I downloaded all of fixpack 12 in about 12
minutes!
