Subj: Dynamic IP on a Warp 4 Server
From: t_am@gmx.de (Timo Maier)
Hi!
More and more clients are coming up, and managing all the IPs is a poor job,
so I tried to setup the Dynamic IP on our Warp 4 Server. Without success. ):
I want to give the clients (mostly NT and W9x) IPs in the range from
192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254, all in one subnet (255.255.255.0).
Some IPs can't be dynamic. Anyone can tell me where I can find a HOWTO?

There is little chance of getting networking support included on a single boot
disk, but you can do it do it with two...
You need to create your bootdisks using SEDISK, and then add network support
using THINLAPS. You will also need to run SERVICE on your server to be able to
access it.

From: jpolt@bradnet.legend.co.uk (John Poltorak)
Can anyone shed any light on this error? :-
LT00090: Adapter 0: NETBIOS is not operational.
I'm using an IBM Token Ring PCI adapter (IBMTRP.NIF) in a remote boot
workstation. The workstation boots up Warp 4 OK, but won't
start Netbios.
Any suggestions on how to debug this would be welcome.

Subj: MediaNoe Cable Modem & Injoy
From: benji00@ibm.net
Hi,
I just signed up for the new MediaOne RoadRunner
cable modem service coming through my area and I was
wondering how to use Injoy with the network I got at
home. unfortunately I have to put Windooze 95 on one
of these machines in order for the tech to come out
and install the Cable modem and setup the service.
What I would like to do though is delete the crap
after he leaves and setup the machine with OS/2
again. I presently have the SOHO of Injoy vr. 2.2 and
would appreciate any suggestions.
My network config is as follows:
Subnet 192.168.0.XX
Netmask 255.255.255.0
router (which is computer #1) -----
(192.168.0.1)
#1 computer - AMD K6-2/350 64 Mb OS/2 E-Business
Serverver (192.168.0.2)
#2 computer - Intel 586-120 96MB OS/2 Warp4 FixPack 9
(192.168.0.3)
#3 computer - AMD K6 166 96Mb OS/2 Warp4 FixPack 9
(192.168.0.4)
Side note: At present I can not ping the server from
the server or any other machine but Netbios is fully
operational, I haven't figured out why I can't ping
yet.

The command "help LT00090" says to this:
<cit>
LT00090: Adapter ***: NETBIOS is not operational.
Cause: There are not enough system resources for NETBIOS
to continue running. Refer to the message log for total
resources currently allocated for all NETBIOS applications.
Action: To resolve the problem, increase the resource requirements
(SESSIONS=, NAMES=, and COMMANDS=) in PROTOCOL.INI. Try the
operation again.
</cit>
Try adjusting the values manually in protocol.ini .
Keep in mind that all values must be bigger
than the respective ones in ibmlan.ini.
Good Luck

Changed the values to:-
SESSIONS = 254
NCBS = 254

LAPSDUMP.EXE will show produce a dump from LAPS (strangely enough!)
It produces *LOTS* of output and I think it is version specific ie: only
use LAPSDUMP.EXE that is included with your copy of MPTS. It is one of
the applets that is included with each version of MPTS.
Hope this helps,
Roland.

Note that there is nothing inherently different about a cable modem and
a router, which in essense it is. What you have to do is first make sure that
you NIC is configured properly along with Warp's software.
Did you choose the Networking install? Does the NIC driver load
properly at boot?
The first thing I would do is check your networking software setup.
Run MPTS to check for basic networking commponents. remove all transports
except for TCP/IP if there are others. It is much easier to get one working
properly and then install others that are needed. Once you are sure that the
basic networking components are installed and configured properly then go
to the TCP/IP configuration notebook and configure TCP/IP. Make sure that
you include the loopback adapter. It will allow you to check your TCP/IP
configuration locally. You should be able to do a successful "ping localhost".
Once you get this working then set up the parameters that your ISP
has given you for DNS, whether or not to use DHCP or a static IP address
your domain name, possibly a host name, a gateway/router address.
>direction would be appreciated. Alose are there any FAQs out there on
>this subject re: Configureing Network Adapters or Configuring Cable
>Modems ?
There are lots of pages with info about cable modems, some that come
to mind:
for RoadRunner info - http://Larkin.NuclearWinter.com/rros2/
Connecting a home LAN to the Internet :
http://nateliskov.ne.mediaone.net/network/homenet.htm
General information links: Warp on the Net - http://www.nfwa.com/os2/
Once you get the above configuration done and have perused the links,
if you still have problems get back to use with as much information as
possible.
I am sure we will be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm running a similar setup. Make sure you have the latest updates to the
TCP/IP stack and MPTS, then configure the LAN card for DHCP. That's all you
should have to do!

You need REXX and a library package called RxSock. This all comes with Warp 4.
>What kind of scheduling mechanism does OS/2 (Warp 4) have?
It doesn't, but there is a choice of Cron-like utilties on Hobbes which will
do the job.

No.

An ideal opportunity to learn then. My homepages are maintained automatically
by such a system as you describe - whatever I change here automatically gets
uploaded to the server whenever I connect.

If the os/2 machine is the link to the internet, you have
two nic's in it. Make sure that your install file and print
services on the primary nic.... the one that goes out to
the internet.

Subj: Is there a way to connect OS/2 Merlin to a Mac network?
From: Brett Ryan <ryan@hfab1.sc.ti.com>
Can OS/2 4.0 connect and share resorces with Macs? I've found OS/2 to be
execllent for networking, automation, databases, and
word processing while the latest generation of Macs are good for graphics work
and multiplayer games. I would like to add a few
iMacs to my home network but I don't know if they could come to terms with the
OS/2 machine.
Thanks,

The domain controller is only required for logging onto a domain i.e.
a client/server configuration. Are you performing a peer or client
logon?

This was an email that I sent which James reported solved the problem.
You have a peer network. THere is no domain controller.
Go to the login icon on networks and then login with the File and Print Client
Workstation
Login icon. You will only see User ID and Password and no Domain. If you see
more you've made a mistake.
You can also go to a command line and type "net view". This will start
everything you need and give you the correct login screen,
too.
As for the scsi zip drive, I have an ide one and it works fine, but you do
have to
tell the network that you want to share it.
Go to Shared Resources ad Network Connection - Properties.
find the tab, Connections.
then click on create connection and wait until you see that screen and look
for Resource Location.
It will show all the machines in the server window. If the machines don't show
up, there may be some other problem.
If you meant zip cartridge instead of tape, then I would ask if you installed
the iomega drivers. You must have if you see
the drive. But since I don't have that kind, I'm not sure how it works.
If you are talking about a tape drive, it won't show up. The backup software
finds it somehow.

It may also be useful to run SWITCHRX.CMD to change to the new Object REXX. It
has
some new functions which are very useful, such as access to semaphores. It is
also
very fast and convenient to use the container classes (tables, arrays, queues
&c)
to organize the files you need to transmit.
It is easier to use the REXX ftp API if you do not need all the socket
capabilities.
From the online documentation:
The REXX FTP API package is contained in the file rxftp.dll. This dynamic
link
library (DLL) must be placed in a
directory listed in your LIBPATH statement in your CONFIG.SYS file. To use
the
functions in the REXX FTP API
package, execute this REXX code:
rc = RxFuncAdd("FtpLoadFuncs","rxFtp","FtpLoadFuncs")
rc = FtpLoadFuncs()
To unload the DLL, you should first call the FtpDropFuncs() function, then
exit
all CMD.EXE shells. After exiting all
the command shells, the DLL will be dropped by OS/2 and can be deleted or
replaced.

It certainly does! I have used the scheduler in the bonus pack for years with
no
problems. It will allow a wide range of different scheduling options (like
every n
days, third wednesday in every month, or whatever).
It is also possible to do the scheduling in REXX if it is fairly
straightforward.
Your batch control program can be started from the startup folder, and stay in
the
background like any other daemon.
/* REXX timing loop for daily task */
iScheduled = TIME('S', '22:14:00') /* Convert scheduled time 22:14 to seconds
after midnight */
do forever
iNow = TIME('s') /* Seconds since midnight */
iWait = iScheduled - iNow
if iWait < 0 then iWait = iWait + TIME('S', '23:59:59') /* Not until
tomorrow */
SAY 'Wait' iWait 'seconds, until' TIME('N', iScheduled, 'S')
CALL SysSleep iWait
'START /B myjob.cmd'
end

Well, maybe not James, but I kept getting the domain controller
error until I realized that file and print services needed to be
installed for the NIC that goes external, not the one that connects
to the internal machines.

This is supposed to allow a Mac to understand the sort of peering file
sdystem used by Windoze and OS/2. I did get the eval but never got
round to trying it properly before my eval period expired so I never
parted with cash. I may go back and have another play if I can get
another eval period.

JASMINE HAS to be the best way to do this.
Look for jsm280r.zip on Hobbes etc.
Written in Java it is quick and you can FTP toa server or copy to a disk.

Subj: Routing and Hostnames configuration
From: tvoltagg@home.com
I'm a newbie with TCP/IP and hope that someone can help me configuring TCP/IP
for a "client" machine in a 2 computer peer network. Here's the setup:
1 - "server" - Win95b running Internet Gate Proxy Server - Computer Name:
cg950645-a
IP address: 192.168.0.2. This machine is connected to a cable modem.
2 - "client" - OS/2 Warp - tcp/ip 4.1 - 8620 stack -
IP address: 192.168.0.1 - Computer Name: Dad
I need to run a SOCKS server to access secure web sites, so I have that
enabled
and pointing to the "server" (192.168.0.2)
The question is: How do I configure the Routing page and the Hostnames pages?
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm in the act of setting up a small network (7 stations) to replace an

but with 2 win machines(1 95; 1 NT).
Problem.
current access for a particular page:
using os/2 server = 3.5 secs - All machines
using Samba = 3 secs windows = 22 secs OS/2
Now 22 secs is just a little bit on the slowwww side.
This reeks of an adjustment somewhere, but I'm just not cluey enough to
know what it is.
Can someone please HHEEELLLLPPPPPP.

From: Aaron Williams <aaronw@home.com>
A couple of years ago I wrote an OS/2 ATM LANE driver for the Adaptec
ATM NIC card. I don't know if much has changed, but the Interphase
driver was a real pain in the *ss and was never stable. I don't know if
these ATM cards are still available or if Adaptec will make the drivers
available. I know Adaptec won't support the drivers because I'm the
only one who knows the driver. The driver should be stable. I pounded
it for over a year using it on my personal OS/2 workstation. The
Adaptec driver supports up to 4 ATM adapters and up to 4 ELANs per NIC.
The driver works with both ATM 25 and 155 (copper and fiber).
A number of things can cause a trap 8, such as a stack overflow.

Subj: Netbios over IP problem?
From: Martin Bergeron <martin@mbg98.com>
Hi all,
I have 3 os/2 servers that they share drives between them with netbios
over IP. The
problem i got is this: If one server is down, and a server want to
connect to the share
drive of the "down" server, it will take 3 minutes before the "Syn_sent"
to end. That's
the limit of the tcp/ip stack...
Is there a way to get this connection time-out quicker?
Thank's!
Martin

The dlink cards work well and they are inexpensive.

Subj: NE2000 card help
From: vk3jma@net2000.com.au (Mark Aitken)
Hi Guys & Gals,
I am a totally newbie to OS2.
I have just installed OS2 Warp v4 onto a 486DX2 + 20 M Ram
It has a NE2000 network card that workeds 100% under WIN95 but I could
not find a generic driver in the install procedure for the NE2000. I
tried the EAGLE NE2000+ driver but this did not work.
I wonder if some one could assist with a way to get the Network, and
eventually TCP/IP working on the LAN so as I can get OS2 working via
the WIN95 proxy server an then the internet.
Please could you send replies to my email address.
vk3jma@net2000.com.au
thanks
Mark

Use one of the generic cards (lots of brand names) that use one
of the Realtek 8019 chips (Ovislink is one). The Realtek driver disk
includes the OS/2 driver in the box.

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/network/warpnet.zip
This includes two different generic NE2000 drivers - use the National
Semiconductor one if possible (not the Microsoft one).
The README.TXT file contains helpful instructions.
I'm assuming this is an ISA NE2000 card. If it's a PCI card, you'd
probably need the RealTek driver, which is a different story.

If you've already got TCP/IP installed - which I assume you do if you
already tried the Eagle drivers - just follow the instructions to install
the generic NE2000 driver above, and if all goes well you should then be
able to plug your IP settings into the TCP/IP Configuration notebook,
and be off.
