Subj: A3D sound card problem!
From: John Muller <mullerj@bigdog.fred.net>
Hello all, I recently replaced my old SB AWE64 with an A3D. The new
card uses the AU8820 chipset and I downloaded the OS/S driver for the
chipset from the A3D site. It installed without a problem. On reboot
there are no errors, all the drivers seem to load fine. However, there
is no sound. The speakers are powered on and sounds are enabled in the
system setup folder. Running Warp 4 FP10. The card works in WIN98.
Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance:)

Subj: low cd player vol
From: williamd1@ibm.net (williamd)
I notice my system sounds are far louder than any volume I can get
from my cd player. The volume tuner in system-sounds affects only
those sounds. Neither it nor the one on the cd player window changes
my cd vol. Using the driver for AD1816 chip.
Is there another volume control for the cd player?

It's probably the usual problem. Did you uninstall the SB AWE64
drivers?
If not, you must either do so now or manually remove it's entries from
MMOS2\mmpm2.ini.
The SB64 drivers are probably still installed, so MMPM/2 tries to use
them as the
primary sound driver.

Z is brilliant! Keeps on chugging away even when burning

Don't bother doing that... Crystal Semi's device driver programmer already
implemented several hardware in their Win-OS/2 driver... After all, they are
not paid to make driver on hardware they don't sell... (Unlike Scitech... :)

Trust me in this.. Joe Nord at Cirrrus Logic is a VERY BRIGHT man. He
has assured me that his Win-OS/2 support will only work with Cirrus
Logic hardware. I've worked with Joe and if he says that's how it
works you can take that to the bank.

Yes unfortunatly the Generic Win-OS/2 stuff has a few problems that I
didn't understand untill recently. First it does not handle several of
the windows messages corrrectly... Hey we were OS/2 programmers what
did you expect ! Secondly it has 2 or 3 really stupid design flaws
that tend to confuse both the client multimedia app and mmsystem.dll.
And finally this whole setup is particularly sensitive to how Win-OS/2
is configured on the system it is running on. So your assesment seems
correct, close but no cigar....

GO FOR IT!!! I bought today Vortex card which is using 8820.
Works fine in OS/2 if I have not installed voice-type.
(Voice type seems to hang it just before desktop is appearing,
same happened earlier with gravis ultrasound drivers)
Anyway, sound quality seems to be really good.

I have an Epson Stylus 640, which works pretty well. It's supported by the
OMNI printer driver at 360 dpi, and the Epson Windows 3.1 driver works fine
under win-os2.
Epson Germany has its own driver for it as well, which works at 720 dpi.
Supposedly it also supports the 720 by 1440 resolution, but that doesn't work
for me-- prints garbage. For some reason, it also prints a "1" in the upper
left-hand corner of hte page.

I am fond of the ESS line of cards - I currently use an ESS 1869,
that is a good PNP card with excellent Win-OS/2 support. If Win-OS/2
support is not important to you, then get an ESS Solo-1 PCI card (it
has better MIDI support, and is equally good w/ PNP). Both of these
cards are very inexpensive, BTW.
Crystal cards have given me numerous headaches - they are not very
PNP friendly, and Win-OS/2 sharing is nowhere near as good as the
ESS card. Although they do sound good when they work, I would wait
until they sort the drivers out.

Well, I have a working AW320 right now. Then next I install SB32 support.
I suppose the next step is to completely remove MMOS2, then add AW320,
then add SB32 and see if that works. However, I'm loathe to break a
working system :(

Easy :) Plug in the speakers and see what comes out! AW320 = I hear
something, SB32 = I don't hear anything.
I believe the Audio Devices shown only appears to be 1... that could be
the problem. The fix is another matter...

if there is anything out there that will uncompress these so that
they can be manipulated with OS/2? I want to burn some tracks
onto a CD, but the compressed format is not recognized.

WarpAmp works very. The link provided in another post here was broken
so here is a link to it on Hobbes:

You need a specific driver , to add on to the basic USB support.
AFAIK, no such driver exists (yet??). You must use the printer with a
parallel port.
Hope this helps...

First of all, get and install a Y2K level fix pack (FP12, is
suggested, along with the Device driver fix pack). You won't be very
happy after Dec. 31, 1999, if you don't update.
As for a good sound card, I have had excellent luck with the AOpen
(formerly Acer) AW35Pro, and a couple of AW37 cards. They use the
Crystal chipset, and the drivers give excellent support (go to:
http://www.cirrus.com/drivers/audiodrv/ to get the latest drivers -> I
suggest using the FM driver, as there are a few problems with the WT
driver).
I don't know much about MP3 support, but I think you need an add on
program (look around on HOBBES http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/ for one of
these) to make that work. The system sounds will make noise when you
open, and close, windows, unless you turn off the animation, or the
sounds (personally, I have turned off both - most irritating <g>).
Hope this helps...

I have the same printer, Stylus 640. Have you tried the EPOMNI driver?
It is for 600 model but works great with 640 giving real photo output
(720 x 1440).

*Don't* uninstall MMOS/2. Are you absolutely sure you have enough IRQs
to be doing this?? Each of these cards requires an IRQ among other
resources. Try "rmview /irq" to see what's taken. Compare this to known
values and the info in the OS/2 hardware manager.
If you have 95 installed, look in the system control panel, clikc on
devices, and double-click on computer. Then select IRQs and see what's
taken and what's free. You may have to disable Com ports or your USB
controller to free up some IRQs, assuming you're not using these
things.

What I mean is, how do you know that you've chosen the right card when
you try this? OS/2 will only play system sounds out of the default
audio device. Many OS/2 MM applications allow you to choose which audio
device to use.
> I believe the Audio Devices shown only appears to be 1... that could

Since the system will only produce sound through the default Audio
Device, you can select wich card is the default in the Multimedia
Setup.
Good luck!

OK, I have an old Acer S23 (base on Crystal 4232). It's fully supported

I found four Vortex 1 8820-based cards that are available retail
at CompUSA stores. I have also listed the CompUSA SKU# and the retail
price. This is from March, 1999 so it might be out-of-date.
1. "Magic Wave A3D Audio Accelerator PCI" by I/O Magic. SKU#
195304 $39.99
2. "Diamond Sonic Impact S90" by Diamond Multimedia. SKU# 216601
$49.99
3. "HiVal PCI 338 A3D Sound Card" SKU# 192299 $49.99
4. "Montego A3D Xstream" by Turtle Beach. SKU# 192288. $49.99

I have an Aureal 8820-based PCI sound card and Voicetype works fine.
This might be a problem with your voicetype install. I suggest a
selective uninstall of voicetype and then a selective install.

I have a similar situation where if I start a Winos2 session & then close
it immediately, my OS2 CD sound increases in volume, & if I start PMChess
or Mah Jongg the sound is maximised!! Volume controll works OK after that,
but if I just start OS2, all CD sounds are muted. Try it & see!! My card
is a Soundpro on Warp 4 FP8

I am not sure, exactly what would be needed. The rest of the USB
devices are supported by device drivers. I have the following in my
CONFIG.SYS (I shouldn't have anything except the base driver, because
I don't have any of these devices, except the USB adapter, but the
drivers don't cause any problems...):
=========================================================
REM ** USB support **
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS /REQ:USBUHCD$
BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\USBAUDIO.SYS
=========================================================
The first three lines are for the base USB support, then there is
keyboard, mouse, modem, and speaker support. I would assume, that your
printer would require something like USBPRINT.SYS to make it work,
which does not (yet?) exist..
Hope this helps...

Actually, that is a good question. Unfortunately, the answer is not
all that easy, and includes everything from "nothing" to "you will
have a total system failure, and you will take down the whole world
wide web, while you are at it". A lot depends on what hardware you are
running, what software you are running, and exactly how you are using
that software. Most of the time, all you will get are a lot of dates
that will turn into 1980. Not a real problem, if you don't care about
things like file dates. Or your Word processor will plug in the date
as something like: Oct. 11 1900, instead of Oct. 11, 2000. Minor
details, BUT, if your Check printing program plugs in 1900, instead of
2000, THAT could be a problem. Not every program will have that kind
of problem, but some will. I hope you get the picture.
Personally, I won't even consider trying to find out what will, or
won't, happen. I don't want to be the guy who takes down the whole
world wide web <g>. If it happens, I can always say "At least I
tried".

Anyone that's really concerned and wants to know just has to set their
system date to 12/31/1999 and see what happens when the clock rolls
around (possibly adjusting the system time a bit so you don't have to
wait till midnight). Make sure it rolls over while you're using apps
and you should get a good sneak preview of what is to come. I've tried
this on my system and haven't found any problems. It ain't the end of
the world, people. ;-)
Of course, the meer panic that the "y2k bug" seems to be generating
might cause some disasters all by itself (people withdrawing bank
monies, causing bank failures, etc.). In a way the "impending doom" of
y2k can be self-fulfilling.
Someone needs to publish a y2k faq or something with the words "DON'T
PANIC" on it in big friendly letters.

Subj: multiple SCSI adapters
From: rcpj@panix.com (Pierre Jelenc)
How do I install two SCSI adapters in the same machine?
I have an Adaptec AHA-2490AU now, and I want to add my old AVA-1502E to
connect the scanner in order to take advantage of its ability to work
without the scanner having been on during boot.
The card is supposed to be supported from the installation CD but
Selective Install says the directory is not valid. Where is the driver
supposed to be?

I have used Bladeenc for OS/2 v0.80 with .WAV files. It lets you set
the bit rate and seems to work very well and quite fast. The .MP3s that
it produces are very playable with MP3 players like WarpAmp. With your
OS/2, a good sound card, and a microphone or line input, you can do
digital recording, encode to MP3, and play a high-quality output
stream. When you use an MP3 encoder, it converts the .WAV format to
.MP3 format by compressing it while maintaining the necessary
information. The .MP3 format cannot be played with .WAV players and the
.WAV format cannot be played with a .MP3 player (unless this capability
is provided as a special feature). Generally, the .MP3 format is about
5 to 10% of the size of the original .WAV file.

Subj: WinOs2 sound anomoly on desktop objects!
From: jricci@.nospam.ibm.net (Joe Ricci)
I would be interested in any thoughts as to the cause of a unique OS2
sound issue.
I have noted a consistent anomoly with with a series of win3.1 games
written by 7Th level that my children play.
The issue:
these games all use midi synthesis
They install and run under WinOs2 when run from a winos2 session.
Flawless, fast and with good sound
If I create a desktop object on the pm desktop with the same settings
as the Winos2 properties, the programs run great but there is no
sound.
No changes in memory, i/o, etc settings seems to fix it .
The same problem occurs with multiple games by the same manufacturer
(examples, Peter and the Wolf, Monty python, Tuneland, Math Adventure,
Disney Topsy Turvey). Most of these games were marketted by IBM
under licensce form 7th level.
I am using a crystal tidalwave sound card. The same problem occurred
with a Matrox Millenium and MGA200 card.
I thought this was a problem of video-sound interaction.
I would be interested in any opinions as to cause and any ideas about
a fix

Can the old ISA Pro Audo Spectrum soundcard run properly on a modern

I have an old PAS 16 Soundcard in an old 486 that is about to be retired
from use. I was thinking of sticking it in my Celeron 300A machine as a
second sound card. However, reviewing some old readme's for setting up
the PAS under OS/2 suggested checking the bus speed is set back to 8
megahertz has it was designed for an original AT bus specification.
Anyone running this card on a 66 or 100 FSB motherboard without

Pierre,
The AIC7870 is one of Adaptec's SCSI chipsets, one found in various
Adaptec cards (and used by my A.I.R. motherboard as well).
If IRQ15 isn't locked into your motherboard's IDE support, it's
available, as are (possibly) IRQ9 and IRQ10. You may need to play with
your system's CMOS Setup to make sure the IRQ you choose is available to
the ISA bus).
I use the word "possibly" above because nothing is certain (;-). RMVIEW
only reports back what Resource Manager-aware drivers report to it - a
driver that doesn't tell the OS/2 Resource Manager that the driver plans
to use (say) IRQ15 can still use the IRQ, but RMVIEW won't report it
("Hey! Nobody told ME!"). Since RM was introduced in Warp (3.0), any
pre-3.0 driver fits this description; unfortunately, I understand it's
also true for some post-3.0 drivers (sigh).
Now, for a query from ignorance: does a 1503 _use_ an IRQ? I ask
because I know there were some early "cheap SCSI" adapters that used
polling instead (Bernoulli comes to mind). OTOH, you have the adapter
in hand; if the manual talks about how to set the IRQ for the card, you
can ignore my query (;-).
Hope this helps a bit in all the confusion...

Just download the appropriate driver (aic152x.add for the 1502e, I think)
from the online
DDPak website and usine the DDINSTAL to install it. You should end up with
aha152x.add in
your \os2\boot directory and BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD in config.sys. If, by the
way, you
add a second 2940, you have to add a second BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD to
config.sys.

From: isaacl@bulls.ece.ubc.ca (e-frog)
Well, it turned out to be not much of an adventure afterall...
In preparation for my Next Big Machine, I wanted to purge all ISA cards.
Actually, there was only a modem and sound card left.
In my existing machine, I have a SB32 PnP (ISA). Hearing good things about
Crystal chip sets, I sprung for an Acer AW320 (PCI). A whopping $38CDN.
Unfortunately, the OS/2 drivers don't come on the CD. I had to download
them. (Note: For the AW320, OS/2 MIDI is not in the drivers yet).
I had some problems at first, but after checking with a few helpful souls
on this group, I finally found out that it was simple human error. (I have
to do a "full" re-install of SB32 drivers to make it work).
Basically, here's what I did:
1) Turn off machine and plug in AW320
2) Boot. Unzip the drivers, type "INSTALL" and that was about it for the
AW320.
3) Use "Selective Install" and add the SB32 AWE PnP drivers. With Base
Multimedia support
4) Reboot.
And that was it. I have both audio devices working on my system, with the
SB32 PnP as the default. (The AW320 is newer, PCI, "seamless" WinOS2
sound, and is better, _except_ the OS2 MIDI isn't in yet, and I need that.
WinOS2 midi seems to work though).
The only remaining issues are:
1) Sound with VideoCD (or CD?) in WinOS2 is munged up. I get some static.
2) What do I do with a 2nd sound card? All the noise just comes out of the
default soundcard only.

You need to check the Aureal home page before you buy an A3D card. There are
warnings that some cards DO NOT work with the reference drivers which were
written for the reference board design --the OS/2 drivers are also written
against the reference design. I had good luck going to Price Watch
http://www.imart.org/fimart/pricewat.htm
and searching for a generic A3D card manufactured to the Aureal design. Best
price I found was $19.

The chipset in a 2940xx (except xx= U2W) is an AIC7870 and the generic
driver for all boards built on this chipset is AIC7870.ADD.
AFAIK the 1502 is hardcoded to use IRQ 11 so you probably need to tell
your BIOS to reserve that one as legacy/ISA and force the 2940 to a
different setting that way. The driver for a 1502 should be AHA152X.ADD
not the AHA154X.ADD that someone else quoted.

The printer driver attaches to the printer thru a port. There are
PARALLEL, SERIAL and LPRPDRVR.PDR port drivers so a USB.PDR is

I was able to use Voicetype in the following way.
First I remmed all voice-type related from config.sys and
instead I run following in os2-prompt:
REM *** START IBM VoiceType ***
SET SPCH_RUN=E:\VT\SPCH_RUN
SET SPCH_RO=E:\VT\SPCH_RO
SET SPCH_RW=E:\VT\SPCH_RW
SET SPCH_BIN=E:\VT\SPCH_BIN
SET SPCH_PATH=E:\VT\SPCH_RO\LANGS\%L\POOLS
SET SPCH_TRN=E:\VT\SPCH_BSF
SET BEGINLIBPATH=%BEGINLIBPATH%E:\VT\SPCH_BIN;
SET PATH=%PATH%E:\VT\SPCH_BIN;
SET DPATH=%DPATH%E:\VT\SPCH_BIN;
SET HELP=%HELP%E:\VT\SPCH_RO\HELP;
REM *** END IBM VoiceType ***
After that I was able to run voice-type programs from prompt.
Has WPS hanged for anybody else when Voice-type is installed?

One trouble I had was that there may be problems if both the cards want to
have
BIOS active at the same time. One is supposed to be on and one off. I got
both to work under OS/2 on, but Win 98 won't work with the first one. Neither
one Adaptec by the way.

How an OS fix would affect a word processor? Or do you mean that
DosGetTime() (or whatever it is named) API will start reporting wrong
time?

Nope.
I do not use check printing programs. Most stuff I use is EMX-based.
So it is time()-based, and time() of EMX will not have problems until
2070 or somesuch.

Hello, There is in fact a driver for the S3 Savage 4 card. It is
located on hobbes under OS2/ public/system/drivers/video. The file name
is s3savage version 6.10.15. It offers high refresh rates and is
pretty stable. You might have to switch to the default mouse cursors if
you are using the 3d cursors. I have the creative 3d savage 4 PCI card
w/32mb and this driver works well. You might also try the Scitech
Display drivers for OS/2. They work also. Hope this helps.

Don't know about the first, but here's what I do with mine:
First I ran a cable from my SB16's line-out into my AW320's line-in.
Second, I ran my CD drive's analouge audio to my AW320's internal
connector. Next I set the SB16 as the default sound device. This way
when I play MP3's with PM123 on my AW320 (which locks the soundcard), I
still get system sounds. Also, I can be in a WinOS/2 session or be
running a DOS game and still get system sounds.

If anyone is involved with Automated Testing under OS/2 can you contact
market@softbridge.com
and ask about their OS/2 offerings.
I'm trying to get an update to their '3270 Add On' for their ATF Agent for
OS/2
so that it works with PComm, but am being told that there is no demand for
an OS/2 version of this product and the company is reluctant to produce one.
If you migrate from Comms Manager to PComm then you are stuck.
(If you don't then you are also stuck - Y2K....)

There are also a few different codecs for WAV files, some of which are

In addition to James sugestions about IRQs, add to the CONFIG.SYS:
basedev=aic7870.add <<< already exists for AHA2940x
basedev=aha152x.add <<< for AHA/AVA 1502x
Set the IRQ for the AHA 1502x at BIOS to *used by isa* (or similar).

I first downloaded an installed Scitech's DisplayDoctor. This worked
okay, but it only allowed a refresh rate of 60hz (which is a little
frustrating under floresence). Still it works well, and I commend
SciTech for supporting so many cards under OS/2.
Then I tried install the file from hobbes and had issues.
I run A:setup and it seems to work okay
It does the "detecting hardware" bit.
The screen goes black for about 5 seconds and then return me to the
desktop with no message, and my command window is gone.
Rebooting gives me a blank screen when it tries to load the WPS.
Any suggestions on what is causing this?

The FP12 updates multimedia files but I don't think it updates voicetype
files. BUT...if it did, you can still uninstall voicetype and reinstall
voicetype AND maintain service level with fixtool 1.41. The fixtool
program will not update a file if it does not need to. You do a
selective uninstall of voicetype and reboot. Then do a selective
install of voicetype. Reboot. Then, start the fixtool program from an
OS/2 prompt. When the fixtool program starts, it examines your
installation to determine if serviceable files exist. If voicetype
files are serviceable, it will tell you to put in only those fixpack
disks that are required to service them. Then, you reboot and you will
have a properly installed voicetype and service level fixpack 12.

As far as I know, all four of the cards that I listed will work with the
OS/2 drivers. And most generic cards as well. Actually, I have never
heard of an 8820-based card that would NOT work with the OS/2 drivers.
The only problem people seem to have with the Aureal 8820 OS/2 drivers
is they appear to install properly and then there is no sound. This is
usually because their previous sound drivers are still installed and
preventing the Aureal drivers from working. My meat-axe approach is to
delete the MMOS2 directory, do a selective reinstall of multimedia
services, and THEN reinstall the Aureal drivers. Then apply the
appropriate fixpack to update the service level of multimedia. This
always works for me. If you are really clever, you can fool around with
the MMOS2 settings and so forth to remove the old drivers but...I favor
the deletion approach. No worries. (Note: the fixpack service tool
will only update the multimedia files if that is all that is required,
not the entire OS/2 installation.) I think the warnings on the web page
apply primarily to the Windows drivers.

Well, if someone got the AW320 working with OS/2 MIDI (not WinOS2), I'd
like to know about it!
The drivers I downloaded straight from Cirrus, and are dated, I think,
April 99. When I unzip the driver package, it says right in the README
that OS/2 MIDI is not working right now. And it doesn't appear to be
working in my system, as advertised.

The documentation says it's preset to 10, not 11, which I figured would

Yes, the selective install autodetect does highlight AHA152X.ADD, but then
it does not find it on the CD.
Aha! It's not in \IMAGES, it's in \IMAGES\DISK_1. Selective install was
looking in the wrong place.
I'll give it a try after I check the IRQ.

up. I exited the session before rebooting, I do not know if this makes
a difference. During the install procedure make sure you choose
"install using default monitor type". Make sure you are using the
latest version of the S3d driver, s3d6.10.15. I had problems with
lockups after installing this driver. I found out that there is a
conflict with the mouse cursors, believe it or not. At various times I
have used both the 3D mouse cursors and the animated mouse cursors. I
was told to reset the mouse cursor to the default cursor. You can do
this in the setup/mouse folder. Simply set the default button. This
solved my lockup problems and I have not had a problem since then. I
thought this was a small price to pay for system stability and good
refresh rates. I also applaud Scitech for their drivers and believe
they intend on improving the refresh rate. If I am not mistaken, the
latest beta for OS/2 includes a monitor type "Scitech Display Doctor"
which you can choose and get better refresh rates. I could not get the
sdd gradd to work, but the gengradd works fine. Hope this helps.

It's probably already in \os2\boot and just needs a basedev added for it.

Shouldn't matter...PCI clock is still 33Mhz on both ends, as long
as you don't set your PCI/ISA thing too low you should be fine (default
is a value of 4...4 divide by 33Mhz = 8.25 which is fine).

The bus speed you list 66 Mhz or 100 Mhz is for the CPU to memory speed, and
to the chipset. The chipset acts as an interface between the CPU high speed
bus, and the ISA bus, which is typically run around 8 Mhz. You shouldn't have
any problem. However, if you are using one of those odball bus speeds, 75 Mhz,
83 Mhz, you might experience some problem with any ISA device, because the ISA
speed frequently is a fraction of the PCI bus speed, although some motherboard
manufacturers used to give you an option on how to set the bus speed, and many
gave you a default bus speed right near what you want.

Not so. RMVIEW does report it, but not with the /irq option, as it
would be reasonable to expect. Instead, try rmview /d . Then search the
output for "irq", and I think every device claiming one will show up.
Dunno why. ..

I don't see anything claining IRQ 10, which is what the card is set for.
The driver is seen to load with Alt-F2 just after the driver for the other
SCSI card, but somehow there's no trace of it after the boot.

The jumper was indeed set for IRQ 10 as describe in the docs.
I went into the BIOS setup, but I did not see any mention of reserving an
IRQ. How is that done?

Indeed it was, with a whole bunch of others. Does the installation put
all those unused drivers there all the time? It seems to be a serious
waste of space.

How is that done? I don't see an IRQ section in the BIOS setup screens.

Subj: Hard crash of Matrox 2.31 driver and G400 MAX
From: Darryl Sperber <sperber@airmail.net>
I just upgraded a fair bit of hardware, so the direct cause of the problem is
going to be a bit hard to pinpoint.
But the actual symptom is a crash of BMGAX64.DLL at boot time, right after the
OS/2 logo (either from Warp Connect or from Warp 4) finally disappears. I'm
now running the latest 2.31 driver for my new G400 MAX (AGP) card.
Error is: c0000005, BMGAX64.DLL 0005:0000c4b1
This is the failure under a freshly installed Warp Connect system, upgraded
through Fixpack 37. Under Warp 4, the crash still occurs but with slightly
different presentation that doesn't actually say it is BMGAX64.DLL.
Now for the curious part... this does NOT happen all the time.
I actually think this has something to do with disk cache (from my SCSI drives
and Adaptec drivers) interacting somehow with the Matrox video drivers for the
G400. Something about whether the operating system (or parts of it) is in
cache seems to be relevant.
I say this because once the crash occurs, if I try re-booting repeatedly I
will continue to get the crash over and over again. But if I power the
machine off and let it "sit for a while", when I turn it back on and reboot...
sure enough I have no problem whatsoever! Both Warp Connect and Warp 4 will
now boot cleanly with no crash!
To my way of thinking, this seems directly related to what's in disk cache.
Furthermore, once I get the boot process to go without crashing, both OS/2
systems will continue boot without a problem... until I boot Win98 (which
always boots and runs just fine with its version of the new Matrox driver).
But when I finally get back to OS/2, sure enough the crash reappears!
So, this doesn't look like so much a problem with the 2.31 driver (although
the location of the failure is constant) as much as some negative interaction
with all the other new hardware in my system.
The relevant hardware upgrades are:
P-II 400mhz to P-III 500mhz
128meg to 192meg
Adaptec 2940UW to 2940U2W, new Adaptec driver
Matrox Millennium to G400 MAX, 2.22 driver to 2.31
I've added a Western Digital 18300 LVD disk drive to the system, but it's for
Win98 (FAT32)... unseen by OS/2. The other drives (3) are IBM Ultrastar 9LP
UltraWide SCSI and are unchanged from my previous environment.
Any thoughts?

I think OA computers (or something like that) has a branch in Calgary.
They carry the AW37 (not sure about the Pro), in Edmonton.

Subj: Yamaha YMF724 driver problem
From: lsunley@mb.sympatico.ca (Lorne Sunley)
Hello All,
I recently purchased a YMF724 chip sound card and I am
having problems getting it to operate with both Warp 4
and WSeB.
The installation of the drivers goes OK but when the system
boots up there is no sound. I placed a /V switch on the
device= statement to hopefully obtain some more
information.
The error message that appears indicates that the
driver could not locate the YMF724 PCI card
with Vendor = ???? Device ID 0004
The card shows on the boot up device screen as
Vendor ???? (the same as that requested by the driver)
and Device ID 000D
I assume that this is why the driver does not work.
The card is a Hi-Wave PCI Sound Card. The chip on
the sound card is a Yamaha YMF724F-V and the
silk screen on the card calls the card a BTI DS-1.
This appears to be the right kind of card but it
does not work.
Has anyone else tried one of the YMF724 based
cards? If so, what does it report itself for the
PCI Vendor and Card ID?

Harry,
What you're saying seems odd... and does not match either my
expectations or my experience. Would you mind posting the output from
your RMVIEW /IRQ and the IRQ lines from RMVIEW /D back here so I can see
what you're talking about?

You can use any of the Hauppauge Wincast/TV models
400, 401, 404 etc (those are NTSC tuners).
The drivers are available at

I still do not follow. DosGetDateTime() returns
Date and time data structure.
typedef struct _DATETIME {
UCHAR hours; /* Current hour, using values 0 through 23. */
UCHAR minutes; /* Current minute, using values 0 through 59. */
UCHAR seconds; /* Current second, using values 0 through 59. */
UCHAR hundredths; /* Current hundredths of a second, using values 0
through 99. */
UCHAR day; /* Current day of the month, using values 1
through 31. */
UCHAR month; /* Current month of the year, using values 1
through 12. */
USHORT year; /* Current year. */
SHORT timezone; /* The difference in minutes between the current
time zone and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). */
UCHAR weekday; /* Current day of the week, using values 0 through
6. */
} DATETIME;
typedef DATETIME *PDATETIME;
It is either correct, or not. From this description it looks that the
problem may be y65536, not y2000. ;-)
As I said, I do not care if some M$-written (or similar) program does
some wrong things with USHORT year. They all have bugs, and one more
or less does not make a difference. All my mission-critical programs
are EMX-based, so do not know anything about USHORT year at all. ;-)
Of course, if dates on OS2.INI start to be set wrongly, then no amount
of optimism will help. :-(

Sounds like plug n play IRQ assignment conflicts to me. Make sure your
video IRQ does not conflict with anything else and that its assignment
doesn't change. Booting to windoze and back often causes pnp settings
to change. Take note on bootup if your BIOS says "Updating ESCD..." or
some such thing after booting windoze.

Hello,
YMF724 driver works only with YMF724E, whose Device ID is 0004.
Device ID 000D means your YMF724 is F version, that is YMF724F.

I agree. I have an Intel LAN card, that uses IRQ11. I NEVER see that
listed anywhere, as being in use. In fact, the only reference I ever
see about IRQ11, is in the DOS utility, where it is set. It does have
trouble, if I try to use IRQ11 on anything else, so I know that it is
there, and being used.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the information.
Do you know if there is any difference between the parts that
would keep the driver for a YMF724E chip (the IBM driver one)
from working with a YMF724F chip?

All I can say, is that IBM put a LOT of resources into fixing Y2K
problems within the OS/2 operating system (and others). I agree, the
returned data should be adequate to handle the Y2K thing, but what
else is going to screw you up? Other things could really be a problem,
and I don't even want to speculate on what those problems might be, or
whether they might, or might not, affect what you do, or do not do,
with your system. If you choose not to update to a Y2K fix pack level,
your system may work, without any problems (I did, originally,
indicate that "nothing" might happen), but I wouldn't bet on it.
All the speculation in the world won't tell you your answer. The only
way to find out, for sure, is to set the date ahead, and try
EVERYTHING, to see what happens (make sure you have a good backup
first <g>).

the best in my opinion is to print to a postscript file using a postscript
printer
driver.
then use ghostscript to create an EPS file from it.
I love postscript, if anything goes wrong, you can always look at the source

Subj: Yamaha 6416sz no CD-DA?
From: rcpj@panix.com (Pierre Jelenc)
I cannot read tracks off my Yamaha CRW6416sz. The grabbers I've tried all
seem to agree that it does not support CD-DA (Digital Transfer) even
though the drive documentation claims it does. What gives?
I can play CDs off the drive normally with CDPM.EXE.
