FWIW, the GA 2.31 drivers are now available from Matrox.

From: stinky@ameritech.net
Hello again!
I re-installed OS/2, this time using only FP10, and got the same
result.
I used the ES1688 driver pack from the ESS web site, which is
at the same revision level as the drivers from the IBM Device
Driver Pack Online site. (1.03 for AudioDrive).
Has anyone else experienced this problem? It seems as though my options
are limited to running without any sort of fixpak but have sound, or run with
a fixpak but play in silence.

Subj: SDD/2 and Hauppauge GRADD VCAFILT use
From: lsunley@mb.sympatico.ca (Lorne Sunley)
Good News, The new SDD/2 beta 7 will work with the
Hauppauge Win/TV VCAFILT GRADD extension driver.
Previous versions of SDD/2 would hang when the
VCAFILT driver were installed. The new version
works without any problems. This "should" allow
anyone that has a Hauppauge Win/TV to use
the GRADD display on any card that is supported with
the SDD/2 drivers.
The GRADD driver provides a much better video
display than DIVE and requires a small fraction of 1%
of the CPU for display as opposed to DIVE's requirement
of up to 80 or 90%

I already noticed that, too bad, beta 7 is due to enormous bugs not usable on
my system. ): But, I think, SciTech is about to release a GREAT software.

through the crap and got me going.
Just to help you out past the learning curve:
(My CDROM is unit #4; replace the "0,4,0" with whatever unit you're using.)
To blank a CDRW:
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -multi -v -blank=fast
To write a multi-session CDR[W]:
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -v -speed=4 -multi cd.raw
To write an entire CDR[W] at once:
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -v -speed=4 cd.raw
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -v -speed=4 -fix
To create a raw cd image:
mkisofs -a -d -J -l -L -N -v -o cd.raw -m "WP?ROOT.?SF" -m "WP?SHARE.?SF"
/=c:/stuff /backup/=c:/mybackup ...etc...
Hope some of this helps.
Oh yeah -- if you're using Warp 4 fixpak 4 or later, then add the "/W" to
the line IFS=C:\BOOT\CDFS.IFS /W -- this will allow you to use long
filenames (Joliet) on the CDROM.

Here is what I did to recover:
Use the utility disk to boot to the os/2 full screen command prompt.
Edit the config.sys and rem out references to the ess drivers.
Then reboot the system as normal.
Get the ess driver from the ibm site as described in the readme.
Install it (minstall).
Things should be back to normal. I recommend remming out references
to the 1688 driver before installing fixpaks above 9. Then reinstall
the driver after the fixpak is applied.
Don't understand why this problem is occuring with this specific driver.

Thanks for the tip. In fact, that's exactly what I did. Still, I get the
traps.
What I'll probably do is re-install OS/2, and install only FP9 (and leave
it there), as FP10 and above seem to break the ES1688 driver.

Just a guess, but have you tried ejecting and reinserting the disc
after writing? cdrecord completely bypasses OS/2 when it writes, so it
does not know that you have put data on a disc until you reinsert it.

Lorne,
Yes it doesn't crash now. But I still get lines thru across my screen
and your app and StWTV don't work .... the image is frozen unless I keep
moving the mouse cursor across the screen area. Hopefully it will get
better.

Don't ditch it! I have had more success with this card than any
other - incl. Crystal Semi cards.
I have the drivers that'll work, if you can't find them. Drop
me a note if you want me to attach tem to an e-mail.
This card has outstanding Win-OS/2 sound sharing...something I
require for my Real Audio occasional surfing. And I have used
it through FP's 10, 11, and now 12 - with DD FP 1.

If you have a Matrox card, then use the latest GRADD drivers
from IBM. The Matrox drivers (up to and including the latest
official 2.31 version) have trouble with Win-OS/2 sessions
and Netscape running at the same time. Real Audio won't launch
at all unless you launch it *before* you launch Netscape.
Plus the GRADD drivers give me "deeper" color (I have a Matrox
Mil. PCI, 8 mb VRAM).

Instead of re-installing os/2, try just re-installing multimedia support.
Use selective install.

Subj: CD player stopped working...FP11?
From: dtander@agts.net (David T. Anderson)
Hey folks...if you are about to upgrade Fixpak 10 to 11, check and see
if it affects your CD audio.
My CD audio stopped working at some point, but I'm not sure why or
exactly when. It MIGHT have been with the FP11 upgrade, but I'm not
sure. The player works mechanically...it shows the right CD player,
and turns the CD and all...but no music comes out. [Yes, everything
is hooked up right ...Win95 works fine {sigh}].
I tried a few things. The FP12 Readme.1st suggests backleveling
several MMOS2 DLL files to cure system sound troubles, but that didn't
work. I updated my various storage and disk drivers via the
IDEDASD.EXE set that was reissued last June...no luck. DANI disk
drivers make my CD audio drive [I've hooked up a second CDRom drive
just to play CDs] disappear, so I'm using the IBM drivers for
now...I'll play with command line switches to make Dani's drivers work
later.
Any other ideas? I know from an earlier thread that other people are
having this problem...

Subj: Yamaha 4416S with a ASUS T2P4 motherboard
From: JNiffen <JNiffen@IBM.Net>
I recently, purchased a Yamaha 4416S CDROM recorder, rewriter player. I
have attempted to install it in a ASUS P55T2P4 PSC00 motherboard with on
board Adaptec 7880 SCSI bios ver 1.24.
The SCSI will not reconize the Yahama but it will see an old NEC 841
CDROM. I have tried the setup with the Yamaha as the terminated and ID
of 3 and the NEC as 2 or 5 but the Adaptec setup utilities on the board
will not acknowledge the Yamaha exist. I have even tried the Yamaha
alone on the system.
One thing funny is I noticed the the SCSI setting will not accept a
change and the controller is at ID 15 not at 7. I am using the
Ultra/UltraWide connection. Also I have an 8 gig WD Hard drive and an
Imation Superfloppy. I have not installed any software except for PC
DOS 7.0 and the adaptec drivers for DOS. So, what I am wondering if I
need to update the Yamaha BIOS, but will it do that if the controller
can't see the CDROM.
Any clues?
Thank you for your time in this matter.
I have sent a similar e-mail to Yamaha, if I don't here from them by
Tuesday I am going to return the drive and save more money for a
Plextor.

I have a G400 and the GA 2.31 drivers seem to work well - so far (a few days
now). However, I have had experiences with Matrox drivers where it would
take almost a week for some bugs to present themselves. I'm not busting
Matrox's chops over this. After all, they seem to really try to provide
top-notch support for us OS/2 guys. :)

It hasn't been updates for a while but
http://www.utsi.com/~kgl/os2-opengl/index.html is a good place to
start. You want OGLGOLD.ZIP from IBM's ftp site. You might also want
to check out www.scitechsoft.com as well if you already haven't.

Did you update the DOS TCPIP? Can't remember what the file is but that

I'm using the ES1688 on my Compaq and also had the Trap while
installing Fixpak 10 (or was it 9?).
I solved the problem by installing the fixed driver but had a bit
difficulties finding it. I first tried one driver from the recommended
pages and it trapped too.
Now it works well in OS/2 side but for WinOS2 I have to use the
Blaster drivers.

Ok, let's start from the beginning (as far as I know):
MMPM2 is the multimedia support for presentation manager (PM)
You install it in the selective install section.
Something like "install multimedia support" checkbox
after that (I presume) Os/2 will restart your computer.
So, assuming you got the drivers uncompacted somewhere in your drive.
You type in a os/2 session (as said in the pciymf readme file) mminstall
(or something like that) to
invoke the multimedia installation utility.
Follow the instructions both of readme and installation programm and the
drivers will be installed.
Then restart you computer and chose at next boot Alt-F1 F5 (detect
hardware)
After booting, if you're luky enough, you'll hear some "noise" warp
startup music if enabled.
If not, check with the device manager (I don't know the exact name in
english) and locate wether
your audio card is listed or not,
If positive, check if IRQ and DMA assignation succeeded.
If not, edit your config.sys and put a /V flag on your driver to verbose
the next boot.
reboot then, and pay attention of what's said at boot.
If you get a message saying IRQ and/or DMA could not be assigned then
you get *maybe* the
same problem I got.
Check first if there not any arbitrary (and unusefull of course) IRQ
and/or DMA assignation trough BIOS
If it don't make things better, then try to move your PCI card to
another slot: It's better not to be close to a shared PCI / ISA port or
a AGP / PCI port (that's what fucked up in my computer !!!).
And if after that it doesn't work, well you can always throw it away or
try to play with the RESERVE.SYS os/2 driver (I gave up at that point,
and hopefully it worked with the other solution.
Well If you still have problems, let me know

Subj: GIMP, XFree86, GhostScript HELP PLEASE.
From: rappleby@cadvision.com (Ray Appleby)
I am trying to open a .EPS file in GIMP. After getting
XFree86/XWindows/GIMP setup, the first try said that it couldn't find
gs.exe (ghostscript) so I installed ghostscript for X11 from Hobbes.
Didn't work. I have been advised that ghostscript 5.5 for OS/2 will
work under XWindows but I'm not convinced of that since the
executables have different names (I need it to work in conjuction
(seamlessly) with GIMP which wants to call gs.exe to interpret the
encapsulated postscript file.)
I can't find any info on how to properly set up ghostscript under
XFree86/XWindows.
If anyone has done this could you please post the procedure or
location and name of a readme file which contains detailed info about
this specific procedure.
I don't just want to run ghostscript, I want it to work in conjuction
with GIMP under XWindows.
Thanks.

I cannot remember where I got it from but the driver is revision 2.00.15.
The name of the packet is os21688.zip 341207 bytes.
The date on my file is 17 Apr-99 but that is probably wrong and caused by
the date bug. The newest file is dated 23.Oct -98 as is the ES1688DD.SYS
which states ver. 2.00.15.
The readme files still talk about ver. 1.0.3.

Ghostscript isn't a GUI program, and as such will "work under X
windows"!
GhostView is a GUI front-end to gs.exe and an OS/2 Presentation
Manager version is available - this won't work under X.
I imagine (but don't know) that the OS/2 X version is also a
front end for gs.exe.

OK, for what it's worth,(yeah, I've got a pretty good idea as well) for

have remembered such a survey, and I don't"......check out
http://cnn.com/TECH/computing/9909/09/euro.warp.stock.idg/index.html
I may be growing feeble and old, and I may have confused IBM with one of
it's product's support groups, and confused the timing considerably, but
the subject matter at hand was quite genuine. More so anyway than the
"hoaxter" that sent me bogus info re: results of the survey.
Now, to more pressing matters: What chances do you give the candidate
Kennedy of defeating the "sitting VP" Nixon in the upcomming election? If
elected, can he make a good president? Do you think he has anything to
worry about from those prohibition bootleggers that warned Joe K "I
wouldn't want to be a Kennedy,....EVER!"?
What's this gotta do with IBM and/or OS/2? well, a double cross is a
double cross regardless of vintage.
Just curious

Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript page description
language used by
laser printers. GSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript that
runs on Windows, OS/2 and X11. Info on how to obtain and configure
GSView and Ghostscript under OS/2 (and other platforms) is available at:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/index.html
All of the files and information that you need are available here but
you will have to download and read some READ.ME files to get some of the
info.

Thank you for answer, but all you said I tried (moving card
from one to another slot, verbose mode, etc,) without success.
However, verbose mode in config sys file explained what
happened: " .. can't detect YMF 724 PCI card.." and another
line something like that. I suppose that it is because
the card was not original Yamaha (although on chip was printed 724),
then SV 550 , so I gave up and returned card to retailer.
I keep looking for OS2 music card. (maybe AWE 64 value/gold?)
Anyway, is somewhere on the net good OS/2 FAQ for this area?
Thank, and good luck!

Subj: Dual Soundcards under OS/2
From: isaacl@grizzlies.ece.ubc.ca (e-frog)
Anyone know if it's possible to run dual soundcards under OS/2? Couldn't
find any mention on DejaNews.
I don't want to muck up any of my setup if it is blatantly impossible.
It doesn't work under Win95, it totally craps out and doesn't even boot.
(The background is this:
I've "upgraded" from a SB32 PnP to an Acer AW320 - Crystal chipset 4614.
I'm a bit loath to remove my SB32 just yet because i) it works, and ii)
the Crystal drivers don't have OS/2 MIDI support for some reason)
Thanks,

Hi,
I just got the HP Deskjet 2000C and it works fine with the OMNI print
driver that I downloaded from the Device driver pack on-line.
The OS/2 driver does seem to be lacking the ability to query the levels
of ink in the cartridges though :-(

Make sure the .dll files are in your LIBPATH, if you want to run

From: nate@lcs.mit.edu (Nathan Liskov)
I've made some progress on the sound card problem.
Evidently there is an interrupt conflict with my 2nd ethernet card
(3com 509 ISA card). With the sound card installed my local network
does not work.
I've thought of two possible work-arounds:
1) Try to find another interrupt for the ethernet card (i'm not sure
there are any)
2) Get a PCI ethernet card to replace the ISA ethernet card.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Yup.. I've got an ESS1689PnP as AudioDevice01 and and SB Awe32 as
AudioDevice02. Other than problems with MIDI everything works great. The only
problem is that not all applications support a second soundcard so that even
if you set the second soundcard as the default it will stay play sound on the
first soundcard.
This is ok for me since I use the Awe32 for MIDI and MP3's and the ESS for
system/event sounds. However since the Awe32 is hooked up to my stereo it's
annoying sometimes that I can't play certain files like S3M's through the
Awe32 and the stereo.
Use selective install when installing the second sound card and it should
install fine.

Yep, no problems at all assuming that you have the nessecary resources
free. OS/2 can handle any number of sound-cards.

I have an SB16 and an AOpen AW320 running just fine under OS/2 and
Win95B.

Weeeellll, do you have enough free resources to do this? BTW, the Midi
problem is documented in the Crystal readme's. Try booting with just one
card to see if there are possible conflicts.
BTW, OS/2's implimentation of multiple sound cards is better than
Win95's.

No, probably not. You may have to find another machine that has a scsi

Either route involves separation of the IRQ's as you've discovered.
I've worked with a few of the ISA NIC cards. Typically, they have a
factory supplied setup utility. That little program, typically run in a
DOS session, may let you choose another IRQ for the card. You may find
that you can move the IRQ off the conflict that way. Then again, you
may find, as was the case with the DC200 cards, that perhaps you are not
given a choice for an IRQ you need. In the DC200 case, I wanted IRQ12.
It offered me about every IRQ except that one!
Now when you move to a PCI NIC card, there may be trouble there too.
Check that moving the card around the slots does or does not chance the
IRQ that it 'sees', as in some board operations, slot position
contributes to how the IRQ's get assigned by the MB BIOS... That said,
you also may find you need to hand select IRQ's for various slots, just
to keep them all separated! You may find, for example, that simply
buying a new PCI NIC and plugging it in, suddenly changes other IRQ's
that you thought were all clear, to conflicts!
In the Award BIOS deals, the initial tipoff is to watch the collection
of slot and IRQ information that is part of the boot run. That is of
real importance in the case of the NIC card(s), as the hardware utility
in your setup icon does not list the NIC's IRQ, or at least mine never
have shown up there for the NIC's I've used..
--> Sleep well; OS2's still awake! ;)

Subj: Generic WinOS/2 audio driver revisited
From: Dr J A Gow <jag12@_nospam_le.ac.uk>
--
Hello!
While having 'fun' trying to find a PCI soundcard that will work
well in OS/2 it appears that a considerable number of supported
cards do not provide WinOS/2 support, a factor that is certainly
useful to myself and could also be useful to others. Now while there is
a beta generic WinOS/2 audio driver around, it only supports wave out
and it appears that it is unlikely to be updated. Now what I would like
to
do is to continue development of the driver to fully enable the
multimedia
support of WinOS/2. However, while I have a considerable degree of
experience throwing 16-bit segments around in assembler when writing
low-level stuff in the dark ol' days of DOS/Win 3.1, I have never
written
device drivers (.drv) for Win3.1, and documentation surrounding the
format
and build tools for such files seems scarce. There appears to be, unless
I am looking in the wrong place, partial source for the generic audio
driver on the IBM DDK site, but this only covers the code for the daemon
process that actually sends the multimedia requests to the OS/2
multimedia
subsystem, and not the Win 3.1 driver or the VDD intermediary. While I
can glean sufficient information about the VDD requirements and
build environment, I have no information about the Win 3.1 driver. Now
if
anybody could help me here with some basic information, or references
to where I may find it, about the following I would be very grateful:
Build environment required for multimedia .drv drivers (win 3.1)
Interface between MMSYSTEM.DLL and wave/midi/aux/mixer drivers (win 3.1)
Many thanks for your time
John.

I can second this recommendation for the Epson Stylus Photo EX - I use
it on the OS/2 boxes both at work and at home and both the quality of
output and the print speed are both excellent. The driver you need
is the EPOMNI driver from IBM DDpak. I bought this printer to replace
a Stylus Colour 400 which, although the standard OMNI driver claimed
to support it gave totally unacceptable results.

OK here goes:
1) The 4416S needs to be attached to a narrow Ultra channel. If its on a
Wide Ultra
channel, you will need an adapter for the connection to the device.
Dependent on whether
its at the end of the chain or not you will need an adapter that terminates
the unused
ways (if at end of SCSI chain) or not (if in the middle). Naturally if its
at the end of
the chain, you'll also need to turn on device termination as well.
2) The firmware in the 4416S may need flashing to the current level. 1.0g I
think.
If it isn't then you may have intermittent problems with it not being seen
by the SCSI
controller.
Whe you boot the machine, does the device get reported by the SCSI bios
along with the
others or not? If not 2) may be the problem. If yes, but it doesn't work
properly then
look to 1) as a potential source of the problem.
Warning: Do not attempt to update the SCSI bios in the controller with the
one from the
Adaptec site. You will need to get any bios updates for built on MB SCSI
from ASUS.
In fact you might well try going to the ASUS tech support site and see it
there are any
updates to the MB bios, as that may the the whole root of the problem. If
you do flash the
MB bios, MAKE VERY SURE THAT YOU TAKE A BACKUP AS PART OF THE PROCESS. I
take no responsibility
if you trash the MB as a result of a failed bios load.
Hope that's of some use.

I just purchased a Lexmark Optra Color 40 from buy.com on Tim Sipples
recommendation. It's PostScript and PCL5. It's been a very good
upgrade from my Epson Color Stylus II. I'm very pleased. It comes with
OS/2 drivers (pscript, pcl5) and those are updated regularly. The
controls on it are done through software and it has the program for OS/2
as well as Windows.

I just bought a Crystal CS4280 based card ($9.95us mail order :).
It's one step better than the Creative Labs PCI128 I got tricked into
buying for $55cdn (no os/2 support at all; but works fantastic under win
98/nt).
The crystal card/drivers work great under NT, poorly under OS/2, and
dismally under Win98.
Under OS/2 (warp 4.5) "DART" programs (like MP3 players) play at double
speed some of the time (skipping every other frame), and the midi
support
is a joke.
My old SB16 non-pnp card worked better, but required an ISA slot.
If you're really desperate to free up an ISA slot, you might try a
CS4280 based card.
This is the one I bought:
http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/noinfo.asp?sogncrs4280
and don't be fooled by all the talk about "3d" and "wavetable". These
can only be implemented with software (poorly) with this card.

do not have an OS/2 M2E driver and I don't think there is one in plan.

The PCI cards which use the Aureal 8820 Vortex 1 chipset work very well
under OS/2. MP3s and digital recording are very good. IMO, this is the
best OS/2 sound solution presently available. The OS/2 drivers do not
support sound in Win-OS2. If you really need this, I would recommend a
second ISA card just for the Win-OS2 sound and use the Aureal for the
OS/2 sound. It is that good. Or just skip the Win-OS2 sound...

There's about four or so free MP3 players that I've seen/use.
WarpAMP(which is a PM app), maplay, mp123 and mpg123(all
three are *ix ports that use the command line). There's probably
others, but those are the ones I use most commonly(although, my
current player of choice is mpg123).

I downloaded all of them off http://www.os2ss.com, except
for mpg123, which I got off Hobbes. They should all be on
Hobbes. Just do a search for either mpeg or mp3.

Well...I would add this (though I have a Lexmark 5700, use it, and
think it generates very nice output): generating output on the
5700 eats lots o' CPU cycles, and also Lexmark has no intention,
when last I asked, of making the escape sequences public knowledge,
so that if you're thinking of a dual boot w/Linux, you might want
to give serious thought to another printer.

From: JNiffen <JNiffen@IBM.Net>
Thanks for the info. What the problem was when I downloaded the BIOS
update for this board, either ASUS did not put the one I needed on their
site or I grabbed the wrong one.
ASUS has two different versions of SCSI on this particular motherboard.
One has Wide/Ultra Wide and the other has Wide/Ultra Wide with RAID port
support. I have the board that has the RAID port support and I
installed the non raid BIOS. After installing the proper BIOS, the unit
is working fine now and will even boot off of CDROM.
Again thanks..

Subj: Re: Generic WinOS/2 audio driver revisited
From: Dr J A Gow <jag12@_nospam_le.ac.uk>
Thanks for the info, guys - but this is not really the information I was
looking for here.
What I would like is some basic Windows multimedia .drv file development
details,
such as what tools I would require to build them (other than a 16 bit compiler
and
linker), how they should be built and what the interface is between
MMSYSTEM.DLL (WinOS/2) and the windows .drv files.
Incidentally, I was, as a temporary measure, considering purchasing a CS based
PCI soundcard until I could start work on the generic WinOS/2 drivers -
although the
Aureal card works extremely well in OS/2, the drivers seem to prevent APM from
allowing
the machine to drop into suspend mode - which since I leave the machine on for
extended
periods is a damn nuisance.
Thanks for your forbearance,
John.

Go to -
http://service.software.ibm.com/ddk/
the site has all of the os/2 driver development files including multimedia.
You will have to register, no costs, and the development tools are included
(16 bit C and masm) plus all the docs. If you get everything for all drivers,
it's about 100mb of zip files.

Hi John
I saw your question the other day but did not have a chance t reply. I
wrote the OS/2 version of the Generic Win-OS/2 driver while I was
working at IBM. I can send you details of the builds environments
both win31 and OS/2 . And if you would like the source we used. The
short version of the win31 environment is that while at IBM we used
their win31 build environment which required MS C 6.0 (I can check on
that) , Masm 5.0, and the win31 sdk. Since leaving IBM I have built
win31 drivers using Visual C++ 1.62, the win95 ddk and the win32 sdk.
(I will need to check on that also) Information about the windows
messages that an audio driver needs to handle are detailed (and I use
that word loosly) in the help files included with the win31 sdk and
the win95 ddk. If you have any questions send me some email and I will
try to help you out...

TESTING TECHNOLOGY VS. TESTERS' REQUIREMENTS
Technology for testing and automated solutions have grown remarkably
in the past decade. But the question is still before us -- do we have the
support from technology that we need? Has technology solved the right
problems? Is the technology accessible enough to today's tester? What are
the pitfalls of using such technology? This year, we will be looking at
the experiences with various aspects of testing technology ï some
successful, and some not.
We look forward to having you share your experiences and learn from
others. I look forward to seeing you there.

The 4280 card I bought does support Win-os2 (not for midi tho), in quite
a clever way -- it feeds the data to an OS/2 daemon process which plays
the sound via mmos2 -- so the sound card is always available to os/2
apps.
Do you have a URL for a card based on the Vortex chip you mentioned?

The CS4280 card's drivers seem to do what you want already -- some sort
of generic connection between winos2 and os/2.
There's an outside chance this part of the drivers will work for a
non-CS card. Here's part of the readme:
10) Audio in WIN-OS/2 Sessions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crystal Semiconductor device drivers provide outstanding support for
WinOS2.
- Crystal WinOS2 audio drivers are automatically installed during
installation of OS/2 native audio device drivers.
- Crystal WinOS2 drivers are OS/2 specific and communicate with the
native OS/2 audio driver to perform audio operations.
- The audio device is considered "in-use" only when WinOS2 is
actively making sound.
For most users, this support prevents concurancy related errors from
occuring. Still, they can occur. Some details on concurancy and
other tips for WinOS2 and DOS game execution follow:
The installation automatically configures WinOS2 Audio when you install
Crystal
OS/2 Audio drivers.
Windows audio drivers are installed for OS/2 Fullpack systemsonly.
The Crystal WinOS2 drivers are OS/2 specific and when loaded under
WinOS2
communicate with the OS/2 native audio device drivers to perform audio.
[...]
12) Audio Concurrency Issues - OS/2, DOS, Win-OS/2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MMPM/2
------
The OS/2 multimedia subsystem (MMPM/2) is designed such that, when an
application is running in the foreground (has focus), then that
application
takes priority over applications which do not have focus.
MMPM/2 manages the device contention, forcing pauses and resumes to
pass use of the device to the foreground application.
This support is only available for OS/2 native applications.
When DOS games or WinOS2 drivers try to use the device, MMPM/2 is not
implicitly involved in mannaging contention.
DOS GAMES
---------
With the PCI parts, there is no Crystal provided support for
Sound Blaster style audio in an OS/2 DOS session.
FM (OPL-2) is supported, but access does not need to be serialized.
FM does not suffer the same restrictions that traditionally cause
sharing issues between OS/2 native and DOS game execution.
If OS/2 MIDI playback is occuring concurrently with a DOS game,
the two device drivers will cause each other to play improper sounds,
but no catestrophic system errors will occur.
That is, the system will not trap or hang.
The added value of no contingincy issues is greater than the downside
of the potential for some bad sounds produced by the FM chip.
For this reason, access to the FM device is never denied.
WinOS2 Audio
------------
When WinOS2 is quiet, it is "idle" and will not prevent MMPM/2 or other
WinOS2 sessions from using the device. This also allows you to
run multiple separate WinOS2 sessions with no concern of audio sharing
between the sessions.
MMPM/2 by contrast considers the device "busy" whenever an OS/2
multimedia application is loaded. For example, loading the OS/2 shipped
Digital Audio player will mark the device as "in-use" and has
historically
prevented WinOS2 from using the audio device.
This is often not an issue as the most prevalent OS/2 multimedia
application, system sounds, releases the device after each sound is
played.

This Crystal Semiconductor driver set goes one step further on
WinOS2 access to the audio device. When WinOS2 needs access to the
audio device, a message is sent to a background OS/2 native application
which performs MMPM/2 commands to kick all native OS/2 applications off
of the audio device. This has the effect of forcing MMPM/2 off the
device
when WinOS2 requires use.
The bottom line is that contention issues are minimized. WinOS2 then
releases ownership of the audio device. On the release, native OS/2
streams that were kicked off the device are automatically restarted
by MMPM/2.

Thanks for replying here. I have used the generic win-os2 driver with
the Aureal PCI Vortex 1 chipset. When you install the generic win-os2
driver, it gives you the windows system sounds and so forth with no
problem. Naturally, I had to try the RealPlayer 5.0 with the generic
win-os2 driver. When you launch RealPlayer 5.0, the sound comes out for
about 10 seconds (excellent quality I might add) and then...it stops.
If you move the slider forward, it will play another 10 seconds and then
stop. Do you have any idea why this happens? The driver seems...that
close! to working, but does not.

: Yep, no problems at all assuming that you have the nessecary resources
: free. OS/2 can handle any number of sound-cards.

Help?
I have started with the SB32 PnP, and it is working.
=> Plugged in new AW320
=> Run the Crystal install program
=> Reboot
=> Use Selective Install and install SB AWE32 PnP support.
The AW320 works fine, but no MIDI (as documented in the README).
Unfortunately, the MIDI files are NOT associated with anything and just
load up by default in the text editor E.
The SB32 no longer produces any sound :(
The CONFIG.SYS still has all the references to SB32. The MMPM2.INI file,
is a bit hard to read for me, but references to SB32 still seem to exist.
Of course, leaving all the hardware intact and restoring the old
CONFIG.SYS and MMPM2.INI files restores the SB32 to original working
order.
Any advice?
Thanks,
Isaac

In my view, dink's Z is the best. It will play streams from
the internet or off a hard disk and it uses less resources
than anything out there.
get it at http://dink.org
