  23. Software Developers to Receive Advanced Sessions at Warpstock

  26.   Developers at every skill level will learn new techniques,
  27.   concepts and real world solutions in the programming
  28.   sessions at Warpstock.  An all-star cast of programming
  29.   gurus will present a dozen sessions on software development.

  31.   First, master programmer Timur Tabi (developer of OS/2's

  45.   Concepts, where you'll learn how to build user-friendly

  458. licensed a special edition of our SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2

  460. pages, and in upcoming fixpacks for OS/2 Warp Client, OS/2 Warp 
  461. Server for e-Business and Workspace On Demand. In essence SciTech 
  462. Display Doctor will become the official display driver technology 
  463. included in all OS/2 products for IBM.

  496. Theta Band Software announces the release of MMPACK
  497.  
  498. Theta Band Software, an OS/2-only software vendor, announces the
  499. immediate availability of the Multimedia PACK.  The MMPACK is a
  500. collection of three software programs that enhance the multimedia
  501. features of OS/2 Warp. Anyone who uses multimedia in OS/2 is sure to
  502. find at least one of these programs of value.

  504. The first program is NPDSMI 2.0, an update to the free NPDSMI Netscape
  505. plug-in already available from Theta Band Software's web site.  NPDSMI
  506. 1.0 allowed users of Netscape Navigator and Communicator for OS/2 to
  507. play various music files through the web browser. This update adds
  508. support for compressed module files, which are becoming more and more
  509. popular.

  511. The second program is an MPU-401 device driver. This device driver
  512. provides support for playing MIDI files with any MPU-401 compatible
  513. sound card.  It acts as a replacement for the MPU-401 driver provided
  514. by IBM and Crystal Semiconductor, and it includes several new features,
  515. such as MIDI recording without needing an IRQ and DOS sharing support.
  516.  
  517. The third program is MMCHECK, a command-line utility which checks your
  518. multimedia setup for problems.  OS/2's multimedia support, aka MMPM/2,
  519. is very sensitive to the contents of one file, MMPM2.INI.  MMCHECK
  520. scans MMPM2.INI and reports any errors.  If an error is found, Theta
  521. Band Software's technical support will help you fix the problem.

  523. The MM PACK was in thorough beta testing for a year, and the release is
  524. moderately priced at $35.  It comes with free updates to any 1.x
  525. releases as well as one year of e-mail technical support.  It can be

  834. This upgrade fixes some annoyances with window creation/activation and some
  835. other minor issues.

  837. It has been the common belief among OS/2 users that the OS/2 version of
  838. B.U.G.S. has been neglegted compared to the Windows version. This is far
  839. from true. Eventhough there has been a difference in version numbers the
  840. games are, except from small differences in their UserInterface, equal. To
  841. clear this up the new fixpack for the OS/2 version has brought the version
  842. number up to version 1.56 to match the Windows version.

  844. As something quite new the full version of B.U.G.S., which can be downloaded
  845. from Stardocks Commercial Server, is now wrapped in a totally new and cool
  846. GUI installer developed by Douglas Hendrix of the Stellar Frontier fame.

  873. As the industry starts to calculate the billions of dollars which will be
  874. spent on Microsoft Windows 2000, a Texas software company, Serenity Systems
  875. International, is releasing a new low cost out of the box PC network for
  876. business users. The new Managed Client(r) products will be launched on
  877. October 16 at the Georgia International Convention Center, 1902 Sullivan
  878. Road, College Park, Georgia, one mile south of the Atlanta airport.

  880. "While 'instant' is too strong a word, my lab people boast that once the
  881. workstation is cabled, they can build the network and provide users with
  882. fully functional PC desktops before a three minute egg is half cooked. This
  883. slashes the time it takes to set up and install traditional PC network
  884. clients. There is nothing in the industry that is as functional, fast, and
  885. easy at any price ... and that's important because this is inexpensive
  886. compared to traditional PCs, NCs, or Windows Based Terminals." according to
  887. Bob St.John, Director of Business Development. 
  888.  
  889. How much less expensive? According to St.John, Managed Clients(r) can be
  890. delivered to business users as a turnkey service contract. As a service, the
  891. entire business computing environment including all the hardware, software,
  892. service and support for the entire network can cost users only half the
  893. current Total Cost of Ownership associated with PCs. At the same time, the
  894. service provider benefits by developing a recurring revenue stream.  
  895.  
  896. An important feature of desktop computing as a service is that businesses are
  897. no longer restricted to products supported by in-house skills. And because
  898. users don't have to acquire product under the service model, St.John
  899. considers this an "exit pass off the expensive technology treadmill" for
  900. business users. 
  901.  
  902. The Serenity Systems Managed Client(r) product functions like a traditional
  903. PC. It may even be possible for an organization to use existing PCs. 
  904. However, St.John cautions "the PC hardware is not a determining cost. In
  905. fact, it is such a small part of the overall equation that Serenity Systems
  906. has a Free PCs for Business promotion, with no limit on the number of
  907. workstations. Users simply have to be under a service contract with an
  908. authorized channel partner. We recently expanded this program to include
  909. IBM's Network Station 2800." 
  910.  
  911. The Managed Client(r) is a flexible PC application platform with support for
  912. many Windows, DOS, Java, and OS/2 applications, and a new Linux desktop
  913. client is in the product plan. Managed Clients(r) normally execute programs
  914. in the client workstation, like traditional PCs, but can also support
  915. applications which execute in the server including the new browser based
  916. applications which are becoming popular. Managed Client(r) desktops can
  917. include personal productivity applications, including office suites from IBM
  918. Lotus and SUN Microsystems, Internet Suites from Netscape, general business
  919. and even vertical applications, such as retail, maintenance management
  920. systems, building automation, security, medical and veterinary specialties.

  922. Present configurations use on-site servers which allow the network to be
  923. managed from remote locations. Network administration, operations, and
  924. software deployment are done with an application called WiseManager(r). Kim
  925. Cheung, Executive Director of Serenity Systems, mentioned that WiseManager(r)
  926. allows a service provider to dial into a server and deploy an update to an
  927. existing application, or a new application, across a network of thousands of
  928. users with one drag and drop action. "If a user needs a new application, they
  929. can call the service provider and watch as the icon appears on their desktop,
  930. all part of a service. Nothing could be easier." commented Cheung. 
  931.  
  932. Cheung also pointed to a Managed Client convergence with the business
  933. telephone, "These two business tools usually exist within inches of each
  934. other on most desks, but they might as well be parallel universes. We'll be
  935. addressing that before the end of the year." Serenity Systems also markets a
  936. full set of Computer Telephony products, including PC PBX, voice mail, voice
  937. response systems, and a telephony enabled database server which can scale
  938. from one to two thousand phone lines.

  940. Serenity Systems plans to move toward Application Service Provider status
  941. with both business and consumer products in the first quarter of next year.
