Warpstock '99 Atlanta Press Release
September 28, 1999
For Immediate
Release
Software Developers to Receive Advanced Sessions at Warpstock
Developers at every skill level will learn new techniques,
concepts and real world solutions in the programming
sessions at Warpstock. An all-star cast of programming
gurus will present a dozen sessions on software development.
First, master programmer Timur Tabi (developer of OS/2's
TIMER0, RTMIDI and MPU401 while at IBM) will offer six
presentations at both the beginner and advanced levels.
Start with Timur's "Introduction to Programming", then stay
in your chair for his presentations on Rexx, Assembly
language, and programming the Presentation Manager. And
don't miss his two-part session on writing Device Drivers,
a highlight of Warpstock '99.
Next, join John Urbaniak and Gwen Veneskey, the authors of
"Object REXX by Example", for a two part session on
programming with Object REXX. In Basic Concepts you'll hear
an overview of the many ideas behind object orientation and
how to use them. Then you'll want to be there for Advanced
Concepts, where you'll learn how to build user-friendly
multithreaded GUI applications containing music, sound and
animation. John and Gwen work for custom software ISV Aviar,
developers of V-Trex and Oz.
Finally, Paul Hethmon of Hethmon Brothers and Inet.Mail
fame will present the basics of TCP/IP programming. You'll
hear Paul emphasize what's different on OS/2 as opposed to
standard BSD style sockets, and you'll hear him cover both
client and server side sockets, hostname resolution, TCP/IP
4.1 and 4.2 differences, and a simple C++ socket class to
encapsulate it all. Don't miss this presentation on coding
for the information superhighway!
For more information on the programming and other
presentations at Warpstock '99, visit
http://www.warpstock.org/99/list_programmingsessions.html
Software developers of all levels will find exciting new
techniques they can use right now when they attend the
premier OS/2 event of this century, Warpstock '99 Atlanta!
OS/2 users from around the world will meet October 16-17
in Atlanta. Visit http://www.warpstock.org for the complete

Subj: Serenity Systems pavilion at WarpStock
From: "Kim Cheung" <kimwaicSpamGoToGarbage@deltanet.com>
We are delighted to announce that Serenity Systems will be
sponsoring a pavilion of over a dozen ISVs in the exhibit
hall at Warpstock. The plan is to demonstrate what Managed
Client (r) computing is all about.
We will be featuring WiseManager 1.2. At Warp Expo West,
WiseManager built a network and populate the desktop with
the Vendor 100 applications. We are bringing the
demonstration to Warpstock.
We will also be demonstrating the new family of WiseTalker
Database Server products, including new features like
support for C++. We will also preview our Building
Automation and Security Software (BASS) program.
The pavilion will demonstrate how traditional PCs and
Manged Clients can co-exist. Many of the Managed Clients
will be running on IBM Network Stations 2800.
We look forward to meeting users and consultants at the
pavilion, and demonstrating a new dimension of desktop
computing, made possible by the capabilities of OS/2.
More details regarding the pavilion will be provided.
Regards,
Bob St.John

Warpstock '99 Atlanta Press Release
September 30, 1999
For Immediate
Release
Cheap Air Travel To Warpstock
Save a few bucks on your air fare, and you'll have more
money to spend on OS/2 software when you get to Warpstock
'99 Atlanta!
We've just updated the Travel page on the Warpstock web
site with a list of online air ticket discounters. Click on
them all and see what they offer. We did, and found that
each one has different fares. Choose the best one and get
yourself to Atlanta for the cheapest price.
Plus here's a trick: After you've found your "best fare"
online, call the airline directly. Sometimes they'll sell
you the same tickets on the same flights for even less.
That's why we also added a link to the Yahoo Airline List,
to make it easy for you. And don't forget that if you're
flying on Delta, you should use the special Delta Airlines
File Number on the Warpstock Travel page, for an even better
price.
We also added a list of the major car rental agencies,
along with their 800 numbers. Once you know your flight,
save yourself a few more bucks and have an inexpensive car
waiting for yourself at the airport.
Don't have time for all that? We also added a link to a
travel agent directory.
Here's the Warpstock Travel page, just waiting for your
visit:
http://www.warpstock.org/99/travel_info.html
It's time to make your travel plans. Use the Warpstock
'99 Atlanta Travel Page to save a buck - and buy yourself
some extra OS/2 software.
OS/2 users from around the world will meet October 16-17
in Atlanta. Visit http://www.warpstock.org for the complete

Subj: [Warpstock] Get Your Front Row Seats For Warped Jeopardy! - At Warpstoc

Contact: Gordon Roland, GRoland@ibm.net
Warpstock '99 Atlanta Press Release
October 1, 1999
For Immediate
Release
Get Your Front Row Seats For Warped Jeopardy! - At Warpstock!
Did you start using OS/2 before it had a GUI? Or are you
a Johnny-come-lately who talks to his machine?
Either way you'll find all the OS/2 answers, and most of
the questions, at Sundial's special big-budget Warpstock
event - Warped Jeopardy!
True to the TV Jeopardy! theme, Sundial has the answers
and the contestants better have the questions in this
take-off of the popular television show, done with a
definite OS/2 bent and a few other twists. (We don't call
it Warped for nothing!) The three well-known contestants
see the answers and have only a few seconds to supply the
proper questions in this fast-paced multimedia
extravaganza and stage show delight.
Sundial Systems will be your host for this first-ever
stage production at Warpstock with a whole new set of
categories, contestants, answers and questions - all related
to OS/2. Even if you saw Warped Jeopardy! in its wildly
successful west coast debut, you don't want to miss
Sundial's Warped Jeopardy! in Atlanta. This stage
experience includes a few "extras", with full-motion video
productions on the big screen overhead, a bit of unique
"team" action and some "special" OS/2 answer categories.
There's audience participation also, with plenty of
spirited chances for those who have "the questions for the
answers". It's fun, it's entertaining, and there are prizes
too at Sundial's Warped Jeopardy!. Take a seat in the
Warpstock theater for this Hollywood-style show, and you
might just walk away a winner. Seating is limited to the
chairs in the auditorium, so be sure to pick up your
admission tickets early at the Sundial Systems exhibit
booth.
Sundial wants you to remember that "Sundial has the
answers!" with their DBExpert, Mesa 2, Rover Pack, Relish
and Clearlook products, and they've created Warped Jeopardy!
with OS/2 answers galore. Join the rest of Warpstock at
Warped Jeopardy! and watch three well-known contestants take
center stage and try to link the answers to the questions.
Remember, the answer is "The Premier OS/2 Event Of This
Century, Warpstock '99 Atlanta!". And the question is, of
course, "Where will I be on October 16 and 17, 1999?"
OS/2 users from around the world will meet October 16-17
in Atlanta. Visit http://www.warpstock.org for the complete
information about this very special OS/2 event.

Subj: Theta Band Software releases MMPACK
From: julienp@my-deja.com
Theta Band Software announces the release of MMPACK
Theta Band Software, an OS/2-only software vendor, announces the
immediate availability of the Multimedia PACK. The MMPACK is a
collection of three software programs that enhance the multimedia
features of OS/2 Warp. Anyone who uses multimedia in OS/2 is sure to
find at least one of these programs of value.
The first program is NPDSMI 2.0, an update to the free NPDSMI Netscape
plug-in already available from Theta Band Software's web site. NPDSMI
1.0 allowed users of Netscape Navigator and Communicator for OS/2 to
play various music files through the web browser. This update adds
support for compressed module files, which are becoming more and more
popular.
The second program is an MPU-401 device driver. This device driver
provides support for playing MIDI files with any MPU-401 compatible
sound card. It acts as a replacement for the MPU-401 driver provided
by IBM and Crystal Semiconductor, and it includes several new features,
such as MIDI recording without needing an IRQ and DOS sharing support.
The third program is MMCHECK, a command-line utility which checks your
multimedia setup for problems. OS/2's multimedia support, aka MMPM/2,
is very sensitive to the contents of one file, MMPM2.INI. MMCHECK
scans MMPM2.INI and reports any errors. If an error is found, Theta
Band Software's technical support will help you fix the problem.
The MM PACK was in thorough beta testing for a year, and the release is
moderately priced at $35. It comes with free updates to any 1.x
releases as well as one year of e-mail technical support. It can be
purchased and downloaded from Theta Band Software's web site at
http://www.thetaband.com . Theta Band Software will also demonstrate
MMPACK at Warpstock'99.

Subj: Are you coming to WarpStock?
From: "Kim Cheung" <kimwaicSpamGoToGarbage@deltanet.com>
If you are coming to WarpStock, can you help and bring a monitor?
The Serenity Pavillion needs 10 to 12 monitors and right now looks like we
are going to be short 3 or 4.
If you're willing to bring one, please let me know. The monitor has to be
with us for the during of the whole show, however.
In addition, if somebody has a 8 segment 100 switch, that will be great.
Ours is acting up and I am not sure we can get it fixed by then.
Anybody get a few 50' 10baseT cables we can borrow for the during of the
show? That will help because then I don't need to buy all the extra cables
I don't need.

Subj: B.U.G.S. version 1.56 for OS/2 released
From: "Jeppe Cramon" <usenet@cramon.dk>
Each decade has brought us new challenges - Flower Power, Punk Rock or
designer underwear: We've survived and defeated them all and finally sent
them back to where they belong. But now our oddest nightmares are coming
true - a new enemy is sending masses of invaders to infect our computers,
palmtops, dish washers and even some of the coffee-percolators!
The only way to prepare for the final battle is to live abstinent (OK, this
one isn't _that_ necessary), think fast, practice hard and - of course - use
the appropriate training tool. Therefore, we at Cramon Utilities decided to
create one of the best training devices ever designed, which (as a side
effect) is also:
The Ultimate Arcade Game for OS/2.
So: Fasten your seat belts and blast your way through the hordes of mutant
bugs, spiders and other nasty creatures in this original fast-paced galaga
style arcade game. Dazzling graphics and explosive sounds meet you as you
pilot your lonely ship trying to free the galaxy from Bills Evil BUGS!
Stardock Systems Inc. and Cramon Utilities today relased B.U.G.S. for OS/2
version 1.56
This upgrade fixes some annoyances with window creation/activation and some
other minor issues.
It has been the common belief among OS/2 users that the OS/2 version of
B.U.G.S. has been neglegted compared to the Windows version. This is far
from true. Eventhough there has been a difference in version numbers the
games are, except from small differences in their UserInterface, equal. To
clear this up the new fixpack for the OS/2 version has brought the version
number up to version 1.56 to match the Windows version.
As something quite new the full version of B.U.G.S., which can be downloaded
from Stardocks Commercial Server, is now wrapped in a totally new and cool
GUI installer developed by Douglas Hendrix of the Stellar Frontier fame.
Thanks to Douglas for his help!
Expect to see a release of this cool freeware, crossplatform and open-source
installer later this year :)

Best regards
Your B.U.G.S. Team

Subj: Low Cost Automated Network Clients from Serenity Systems
From: "Kim Cheung" <kimwaicSpamGoToGarbage@deltanet.com>
College Park, GA.
As the industry starts to calculate the billions of dollars which will be
spent on Microsoft Windows 2000, a Texas software company, Serenity Systems
International, is releasing a new low cost out of the box PC network for
business users. The new Managed Client(r) products will be launched on
October 16 at the Georgia International Convention Center, 1902 Sullivan
Road, College Park, Georgia, one mile south of the Atlanta airport.
"While 'instant' is too strong a word, my lab people boast that once the
workstation is cabled, they can build the network and provide users with
fully functional PC desktops before a three minute egg is half cooked. This
slashes the time it takes to set up and install traditional PC network
clients. There is nothing in the industry that is as functional, fast, and
easy at any price ... and that's important because this is inexpensive
compared to traditional PCs, NCs, or Windows Based Terminals." according to
Bob St.John, Director of Business Development.
How much less expensive? According to St.John, Managed Clients(r) can be
delivered to business users as a turnkey service contract. As a service, the
entire business computing environment including all the hardware, software,
service and support for the entire network can cost users only half the
current Total Cost of Ownership associated with PCs. At the same time, the
service provider benefits by developing a recurring revenue stream.
An important feature of desktop computing as a service is that businesses are
no longer restricted to products supported by in-house skills. And because
users don't have to acquire product under the service model, St.John
considers this an "exit pass off the expensive technology treadmill" for
business users.
The Serenity Systems Managed Client(r) product functions like a traditional
PC. It may even be possible for an organization to use existing PCs.
However, St.John cautions "the PC hardware is not a determining cost. In
fact, it is such a small part of the overall equation that Serenity Systems
has a Free PCs for Business promotion, with no limit on the number of
workstations. Users simply have to be under a service contract with an
authorized channel partner. We recently expanded this program to include
IBM's Network Station 2800."
The Managed Client(r) is a flexible PC application platform with support for
many Windows, DOS, Java, and OS/2 applications, and a new Linux desktop
client is in the product plan. Managed Clients(r) normally execute programs
in the client workstation, like traditional PCs, but can also support
applications which execute in the server including the new browser based
applications which are becoming popular. Managed Client(r) desktops can
include personal productivity applications, including office suites from IBM
Lotus and SUN Microsystems, Internet Suites from Netscape, general business
and even vertical applications, such as retail, maintenance management
systems, building automation, security, medical and veterinary specialties.
Present configurations use on-site servers which allow the network to be
managed from remote locations. Network administration, operations, and
software deployment are done with an application called WiseManager(r). Kim
Cheung, Executive Director of Serenity Systems, mentioned that WiseManager(r)
allows a service provider to dial into a server and deploy an update to an
existing application, or a new application, across a network of thousands of
users with one drag and drop action. "If a user needs a new application, they
can call the service provider and watch as the icon appears on their desktop,
all part of a service. Nothing could be easier." commented Cheung.
Cheung also pointed to a Managed Client convergence with the business
telephone, "These two business tools usually exist within inches of each
other on most desks, but they might as well be parallel universes. We'll be
addressing that before the end of the year." Serenity Systems also markets a
full set of Computer Telephony products, including PC PBX, voice mail, voice
response systems, and a telephony enabled database server which can scale
from one to two thousand phone lines.
Serenity Systems plans to move toward Application Service Provider status
with both business and consumer products in the first quarter of next year.

Subj: Revised OS/2 Software Choice Information
From: "Walter Metcalf" <os2.guide@about.com>
On Oct 2, 1999 I published a bulletin on the Focus on OS/2 What's New? page
regarding IBM new policy regarding Software Choice
and the new price of $249 per year. Although I received this information from
an IBM representative, it may have been incorrect.
Last night (October 6) I received an email from Al Burke, Marketing
Management, OS/2 Business Unit, NCSD which gave very
detailed information including the fact that the price of $249 was for a TWO
YEAR subscription. He also detailed what software the
subscription covers. For more information, please see
http://os2.about.com/library/blnews.htm.
I apologize for the confusion caused by this error.
