PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS by Chris Johnson Current Revision

Attention Power Users:
Welp, I have delved into looking into the latest config analysis
and will summarize my FINAL tweaking to my 20 meg OS/2 system
with enhanced IDE controller and 540 meg drive.
1) IFS=C:\OS2\HPFS.IFS /CACHE:2048 /CRECL:64 /AUTOCHECK:CD
If you don't have HPFS, remove any reference to HPFS
2) Removed IBM2FLPY.ADD
3) SET RESTARTOBJECT=STARTUPFOLDERSONLY
4) SET KEYS=OFF (This saved me a little mem)
5) PRIORITY_DISK_IO=YES (Personal Preference--when bbs is up--NO)
6) FILES=30 (For DOS sessions)
7) BUFFERS=90 (Good for floppy access, less mem dictates lower buffers)
8) MAXWAIT=2 (Things are a little more responsive. Set to 1 if BBS)
9) RUN=C:\OS2\CACHE.EXE /MAXAGE:7500 /DISKIDLE:60000 /BUFFERIDLE:60000
10) SWAPPATH=C:\OS2\SYSTEM 2048 8192 (I saw it go to 8 ONCE-so I chose
to set it there. Personal pref.
'OS/2 Unleashed' says to place the
swapper.dat on the most used
partition of the least used drive)
11) THREADS=512 (Since I have the memory to waste. I doubt I would need
more than 100. I chose 512 for that rare moment)
12) PRINTMONBUFSIZE=2048,134,134 (awesome!)
13) FCBS=4,2 (FCBS is an old cow so I put the mins in to save some mem)
14) I REM'd out all references to TCPIP as I don't have a local
provider.
15) I REM'd out the refrence to DISKCACHE as I don't run FAT. SAVED
2 MEG due to the "D" switch enabled!!!
As you can see, I scrunched memory where I could and placed it in areas
that starve for it, ie CACHE, BUFFERS, PRINTMONBUFFERSIZE etc...
System Information says I have 4.5 meg allocated to OS/2 and the rest is
FREE.
This advice should be ok for 16 meg machines too. On 12 meg machines, I
would bring down the THREADS, PRINTMONBUFSIZE, and CACHE a notch. On 8
meg machines I would go no more than 1024 cache.
If this helps anyone out, let me know!
Also, if anyone wants to add some advice, feel free to email me the
info. Updates are provided as new info is received.
Respectfully,
Chris Johnson 1:208/610
