This file contains instructions on how to obtain PGP 2.6.2 from MIT.
The PGP documentation is available in this directory either as the two
files pgpdoc1.txt (Volume I of the manual) and pgpdoc2.txt (Volume II)
or as the ZIP file pgp262dc.zip. This directory (/pub/PGP) also contains
the file pgformat.doc which describes the internal format of PGP
messages.
In order get the PGP 2.6.2 software itself, you need to first fetch and
read the files rsalicen.txt and mitlicen.txt. The first of these
contains the license agreement for the version of RSAREF that is used by
PGP 2.6.2. The later file contains a license from MIT to you (if you
choose to download PGP 2.6.2).
If you agree with the licenses, you should now "telnet" (remote login,
*not* FTP) to net-dist.mit.edu and login on the "getpgp" account. You
will be required to answer four questions after which the location of
the PGP software will be provided to you. You then again use anonymous
ftp (login as anonymous giving your e-mail address as your password,
note: do *not* login as "getpgp") to get the actual software. The
location of the software will be something of the form:
/pub/PGP/dist/U.S.-only-xxxx
where the -xxxx will be a randomly appearing set of letters and digits.
Note: you must change directly to this directory as the /pub/PGP/dist
directory itself is not listable.
There are two common reasons why you may not be able to change to this
directory. The first has to do with the fact that the exact name of the
hidden directory is changed at the top and bottom of each hour. You must
be sure to attempt to change to the hidden directory within the same
half hour as you did the "telnet" command to obtain the filename.
The second reason you may have trouble is because our distribution FTP
server believes that your host is outside of the United States. If you
are in fact in the U.S. you should send mail to:
postmaster@net-dist.mit.edu. Please include the fully qualified domain
name of the system from which you attempted the FTP transaction.
Below is a copy of the questions you will be asked when you telnet to
net-dist.mit.edu and login as "getpgp":

This distribution of PGP 2.6.2 incorporates the RSAREF(tm) Cryptographic
Toolkit under license from RSA Data Security, Inc. A copy of that
license is in the file /pub/PGP/rsalicen.txt available via anonymous FTP
from net-dist.mit.edu (note: login as anonymous *not* getpgp). In
accordance with the terms of that license, PGP 2.6.2 may be used for
non-commercial purposes only.
PGP 2.6.2 and RSAREF may be subject to the export control laws of the
United States of America as implemented by the United States Department
of State Office of Defense Trade Controls.
Users who wish to obtain a copy of PGP 2.6.2 are require to answer the
following questions:
Are you a citizen or national of the United States or a person who
has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United
States under the Immigration and Naturalization Act?
<type "yes" or "no">
Do you agree not to export PGP 2.6.2, or RSAREF to the extent
incorporated therein, in violation of the export control laws of the
United States of America as implemented by the United States
Department of State Office of Defense Trade Controls?
<type "yes" or "no">
Do you agree to the terms and conditions of the RSAREF license (in
/pub/PGP/rsalicen.txt)?
