ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. BookManager Book ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the BookManager Book window to read online books.

When you open a book, the title of the book is displayed in the title bar at
the top of the Book window. In addition, two windows appear inside the Book
window: the Table of Contents window and the Topic window.

The Table of Contents window contains a sequential list of the topics in the
book. Double-click on an entry, or move the cursor to it and press Enter, to
display the topic in the Topic window. In addition, you can select a topic from
this list to print or to copy to the OS/2 clipboard.

The Topic window contains the text of the book. Each book is divided into
topics that correspond to chapters and sections. The topic number or identifier
(unnumbered name such as Preface or Title) and the topic heading are displayed
at the top of the Topic window. The copyright notice or security
classification, if any, is displayed below the topic heading.

If you specify a book and a topic when you start the program (from the OS/2
command prompt), the topic is displayed in the Topic window. If you do not
specify a topic, the topic containing the bookmark, if there is one, is
displayed. If there is no bookmark, the first topic in the book is displayed.

Keywords appear in the action bar below the book title. Click on one of these
keywords, or move the cursor to it and press Enter, to display a pull-down list
that lets you do one of the following tasks:

 Books
           To get more information about a book or close a book.
 GoTo
           To move to another topic; display the Table of Contents, Index,
           Figures, or Tables window; view revisions; return from a hypertext
           or cross-reference link; review a list of topics seen; retrace your
           topic path; or move to the topic containing the bookmark.
 Search
           To search a book or topic for words and phrases or turn emphasis on
           or off for search matches.
 Notes
           To create and edit margin notes for a line or topic, discard notes,
           or view a list of notes for the book.
 Services
           To copy a selected topic or marked area to the OS/2 clipboard; print
           a marked area, selected topic, or picture; or unmark text.
 Options
           To select display colors for a specific window area, change the size
           and font of the text characters in the Topic window, clear the check
           marks next to topics you have seen, or change the level of detail
           displayed in the Table of Contents or the Search Results window.
 Window
           To change the arrangement of open windows or make another open
           window active.
 Help
           To learn how to get help and view extended help for the Book window
           or the active secondary windows within it. You can also review
           shortcut key definitions, the help index, an explanation of moving
           around and making selections in BookManager, and copyright and
           version information for the program.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Books ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Books in the Book window action bar to get more information about a book or
close a book.

You can select one of the following:

 Describe
           To display additional information about the active book
 Close
           To close the active book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Describe ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Describe on the Books pull-down in the Book window to display the Book
Description window.

You can use this window to display additional information about the active
book, including the title and the document number. In addition, the book
description may include the author, the date, and the complete path and file
name.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Close ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Close on the Books pull-down in the Book window to display the Close Book
window.

You can use this window to close the active book and keep the previous
bookmark, close the book and save your place with a new bookmark, or close the
book without placing a bookmark.

If another book is open, it remains open after you close this book. You must
close each Book window, Bookshelf window, and Books and Bookshelves window
separately.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. GoTo ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use GoTo in the Book window action bar to see specific parts of a book.

You can select one of the following:

 Topic
           To go to a specific topic
 Table of Contents
           To display the Table of Contents window
 Index
           To display an alphabetical list of subjects in the book
 Figure list
           To display a list of numbered illustrations
 Table list
           To display a list of numbered tables
 Revisions
           To display a list of topics that have been changed
 Previous link or reference
           To return to the location from which you moved to a hypertext or
           cross-reference link
 Topics seen list
           To display a list of up to the last 200 topics that you have seen
 Retrace topic path
           To go back to the preceding topic that you have seen
 Closing bookmark
           To go to the bookmark that you placed the last time you closed the
           book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Topic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Topic on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the Go to Topic
window.

You can use this window to specify the number or identifier of the topic you
want to display. A topic is a section heading and its contents (text and
graphics).

A topic number is the section number assigned to most topic headings (such as
1.3.8). A topic identifier is the name assigned to certain unnumbered topics
outside the main body of a book (such as Preface, Glossary, or Contents).


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Table of Contents ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Table of Contents on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the
Table of Contents window.

You can use this window to view a list of the book's topic numbers or
identifiers (unnumbered names) and topic headings in sequential order.

When you double-click on a topic in the Table of Contents, or move the cursor
to the topic and press Enter, it is displayed in the Topic window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Index on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the Index window.

You can use this window to view an alphabetical list of the subjects in a book
and the topics in which they are found.

When you double-click on the subject, or move the cursor to the subject and
press Enter, the first topic in which the subject is found is displayed. If
more than one topic is listed for a subject, you can double-click on each topic
in the Index, or move the cursor to the topic and press Enter, to display that
topic in the Topic window.

Index is unavailable if the author has not created an index.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Figure List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Figure list on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the Figures
window.

You can use this window to view a list of the numbered illustrations in the
book.

Double-click on the figure title, or move the cursor to the title and press
Enter, to display the figure in the Topic window. If the figure is a picture
graphic, it is represented by a picture name or number (graphics reference
link) emphasized in a contrasting color or shade.

The figures or illustrations that are displayed in the Picture window are
assigned graphics reference links, which are either picture file names or
sequential numbers. Double-click on this graphics reference link, or move the
cursor to the link and press Enter, to display the figure in the Picture
window.

Figure list is unavailable if the author has not created a list of figures.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Table List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Table list on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the Tables
window.

You can use this window to view a list of the numbered tables in the book.

Double-click on a table title, or move the cursor to the title and press Enter,
to display the table in the Topic window.

Table list is unavailable if the author has not created a list of tables.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Revisions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Revisions on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the Revisions
window.

You can use this window to view a list of topics that contain changes and the
revision symbol (code) used for each. Revisions are listed in the order found
in the book.

Revisions is unavailable if the author has not indicated that there are changes
in the book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Previous Link or Reference ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Previous link or reference on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to
return to the location from which you selected a hypertext or cross-reference
link.

A hypertext or cross-reference link is an emphasized word or phrase that refers
you to a related area of the book, such as a figure, a table, or another topic.

You can move to the linked area by double-clicking on the emphasized phrase, or
by moving the cursor to it and pressing Enter. After you have viewed the linked
area, use Previous link or reference to return to your original location in the
book.

Example:

You are reading topic 1.2.1.1, File Servers. You double-click on the emphasized
phrase See topic 1.2.2, Connections. Topic 1.2.2 is displayed giving more
information on types of connections.

You can continue moving through the book from topic 1.2.2, or you can select
Previous link or reference to return to topic 1.2.1.1.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Topics Seen List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Topics seen list on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to display the
Topics Seen List window.

You can use this window to view a list of up to the last 200 topics you have
seen in the active book or since the last time you used Clear to erase the
Topics Seen List for the active book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Retrace Topic Path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Retrace topic path on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to move
backward to the topic from which you reached the currently active topic.

Retrace topic path returns you to the beginning of the topic from which you:

 o Selected a hypertext or cross-reference link
 o Selected Topic on the GoTo pull-down
 o Selected the Next topic or Previous topic pushbutton
 o Scrolled to the present topic.

 You can continue selecting Retrace topic path to move backward step-by-step
 through the topics you have seen. However, if you select Retrace topic path
 after you select a topic from the Topics Seen List window, you move backward
 through the topics beginning with that topic.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Closing Bookmark ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Closing bookmark on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window to go to the
topic that was active the last time you placed a bookmark.

A bookmark can be placed when you close a book. When you place a bookmark, the
book opens to that topic each time you open the book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Search ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Search in the Book window action bar to look in the book for specific words
and phrases.

You can select one of the following:

 Search [...]
           To search a book or a selected topic for specific words and phrases,
           change the search wildcard character, set search options for scope
           and type, display a list of words spelled similarly to a selected
           word, and display the search results
 Emphasize matches
           To switch emphasis of search matches on or off.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Search Book ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Search book on the Search pull-down in the Book window to display the
Search Book window.

You can use this window to specify your search words and phrases, change your
search wildcard character, set your search options for scope and type, display
a list of words spelled similarly to a selected word, and start the search of
an entire book.

Search book is unavailable if the Topic window is not active.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Search Selected Topic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Search selected topic on the Search pull-down in the Book window to display
the Search Selected Topic window.

You can use this window to specify your search words and phrases, change your
search wildcard character, set your search options for scope and type, display
a list of words spelled similarly to a selected word, and start the search
within a selected topic.

Search selected topic is unavailable if the Table of Contents window is not
active with a topic selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Emphasize Matches ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Emphasize matches on the Search pull-down in the Book window to turn the
emphasis of search matches on or off. If there is a check mark next to
Emphasize matches, it is on.

When Emphasize matches is on, matched search words or phrases are displayed in
the Topic window in a contrasting color or shade.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Notes ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Notes in the Book window action bar to create, view, change, or discard a
margin note, or to view a list of the margin notes in a book.

A margin note contains additional information or comments attached to a topic
or line of text in a book.

If a margin note is attached to the topic heading, it is a topic note. If a
margin note is attached to a line of text, a table, or a graphics reference
link, it is a line note.

If a line or topic has a margin note attached to it, a Note icon appears in the
Topic window in the left margin.

You can select one of the following:

 Create
           To write a new margin note. Create is unavailable if the cursor is
           on a line or heading that already has a margin note attached to it.
 Edit
           To change or view an existing margin note. Edit is unavailable if
           the cursor is not on a line or heading that has a margin note
           attached to it.
 Discard
           To delete a margin note. Discard is unavailable if the cursor is not
           on a line or heading that has a margin note attached to it.
 List
           To view a list of all the margin notes for the active book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Create ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Create on the Notes pull-down in the Book window to display the Create
Margin Note window.

You can use this window to attach a margin note to a topic heading or a
specific line in the book.

To create a line margin note, click on the line of text or move the cursor to
the line to which you want the note attached. Then click on Create, or move the
cursor to it and press Enter.

To create a topic margin note, click on the topic heading or move the cursor to
the heading to which you want the note attached. Then click on Create, or move
the cursor to it and press Enter.

Create is unavailable if the cursor is on a line or heading that already has a
margin note attached to it. To open an existing margin note, double-click on
the Note icon, or move the cursor to the line that contains the icon and select
Edit on the Notes pull-down.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Edit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Edit on the Notes pull-down in the Book window to display the Margin Note
window.

You can use this window to change or view a margin note attached to a topic
heading or a specific line in the book.

To change or view an existing margin note, double-click on the Note icon that
appears in the Topic window to the left of the topic or line, or move the
cursor to the icon and press Enter.

Edit is unavailable if the cursor is not on a line or heading that has a margin
note attached to it.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Discard ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Discard on the Notes pull-down in the Book window to delete a margin note
from a book.

To discard a note, click on the Note icon to the left of the line or topic
whose note you want to remove, or move the cursor to the line that contains the
icon. Then click on Discard, or move the cursor to it and press Enter. When the
confirmation message appears, click on Yes, or move the cursor to it and press
Enter.

Discard is unavailable if the cursor is not on a line or heading that has a
margin note attached to it.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use List on the Notes pull-down in the Book window to display the Margin Notes
List window.

You can use this window to view the topic number or identifier (unnumbered
name), type of note (line or topic), and first line of each margin note in the
active book. You can then view the note or change it, discard the note, or view
the topic to which the note is attached.

List is unavailable if there are no margin notes in the active book.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Services ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Services in the Book window action bar to copy a marked area or a selected
topic to the OS/2 clipboard; to print a marked area, selected topic, or
picture; or to unmark text.

You can select one of the following:

 Copy to clipboard
           To copy the marked area to the OS/2 clipboard if the Topic window is
           active, or copy the selected topic if the Table of Contents window
           is active
 Print [...]
           To print the marked area on the attached printer if the Topic window
           is active, print a selected topic on the attached printer if the
           Table of Contents window is active, or print the picture graphic on
           the attached graphics printer if the Picture window is active
 Unmark text
           To unmark an area that has been marked.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 26. Copy to Clipboard ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Copy to clipboard on the Services pull-down in the Book window to copy all
or part of a topic to the OS/2 clipboard. There are two ways you can copy text:

 o Select a topic from the Table of Contents window. Then click on Copy to
   clipboard, or move the cursor to it and press Enter. If you select a topic
   that contains subtopics, indicated by a Plus (+) icon or a Minus (-) icon in
   the Table of Contents, the topic and all its subtopics are copied.
 o Mark the text in the Topic window that you want to copy. Then click on Copy
   to clipboard, or move the cursor to it and press Enter. You can mark the
   text by holding down mouse button 1, dragging it, and then releasing it. See
   Getting Started help for more information on marking text.

 The first time you copy information to the clipboard in a BookManager session,
 a message is displayed telling you that the material you are copying may be
 protected by a copyright.

 Copy to clipboard is unavailable if there is no marked text or selected topic,
 or if the Topic window or the Table of Contents window is not active. Copy to
 clipboard is also unavailable if the Table of Contents window is active and
 TABLES, FIGURES, INDEX, or CONTENTS is selected.

 The clipboard holds the text that you copy and may be used as temporary
 storage by all OS/2 programs.

 Text that you copy to the clipboard replaces anything already in the
 clipboard. If you copy text to the clipboard and then exit BookManager, the
 text remains in the clipboard until it is replaced.

 You can use the clipboard with another program, such as a word processor or
 editor, or you can use it within BookManager. For example, you can "paste"
 text from the clipboard into a margin note or into the entry area for search
 words and phrases by pressing Shift+Ins. See your OS/2 documentation for more
 information on the clipboard.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Print Marked Area ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Print marked area on the Services pull-down to print the area marked in the
Topic window. The Topic window must be active.

You can mark the text by holding down mouse button 1, dragging it, and then
releasing it. See Getting Started help for more information on marking text.

The first time you print in a BookManager session, a message is displayed
telling you that the material you are printing may be protected by a copyright.

To print marked text, a printer with a monospaced font is recommended. With a
monospaced font, each character takes up the same amount of space, regardless
of how wide or narrow it is. For example, an m takes up the same space as an i.

Print marked area is unavailable when there is no marked text.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Print Selected Topic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Print selected topic on the Services pull-down to print the topic selected
in the Table of Contents.

If you select a topic that contains subtopics, indicated by a Plus (+) icon or
a Minus (-) icon in the Table of Contents, the topic and all its subtopics are
printed.

The first time you print in a BookManager session, a message is displayed
telling you that the material you are printing may be protected by a copyright.

To print selected text, a printer with a monospaced font is recommended. With a
monospaced font, each character takes up the same amount of space, regardless
of how wide or narrow it is. For example, an m takes up the same space as an i.

Print selected topic is unavailable if the Table of Contents window is not
active, or if the Table of Contents is active and FIGURES, TABLES, INDEX, or
CONTENTS is selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. Print Picture ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Print picture on the Services pull-down to print the picture graphic
displayed in the Picture window on a graphics printer. The first time you print
in a BookManager session, a message is displayed telling you that the material
you are printing may be protected by a copyright.

Print picture is unavailable if the Picture window is not active.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. Unmark Text ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Unmark text on the Services pull-down in the Book window to unmark an area
that you have marked with either the keyboard or a mouse.

Unmark text is unavailable if there is no marked area or if the Topic window is
not active.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 31. Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Options in the Book window action bar to change the display colors and
character style, to clear the check marks next to items that you have seen, or
to change the level of detail in the Table of Contents or Search Results
window.

You can select one of the following:

 Set colors
           To change the colors used by BookManager to display specified areas
           such as the Topic window background
 Set character style
           To change the size and type font of the text characters in the Topic
           window
 Clear item-seen check marks
           To remove all check marks in the Table of Contents, Search Results,
           Revisions, Figures, Tables, or Margin Notes List window next to
           topics you have seen
 Tree
           To change the level of detail displayed in the Table of Contents or
           Search Results window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 32. Set Colors ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Set colors on the Options pull-down in the Book window to display the Set
Colors window.

You can use this window to change the colors used to display one or more
specified areas within the Book window.

You can change the colors permanently or only for the active session. You can
also return the colors to the values specified when BookManager was installed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 33. Set Character Style ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Set character style on the Options pull-down in the Book window to display
the Set Character Style window.

You can use this window to set the size and type font of the text characters in
the Topic window. When you change the type size or font, it remains at the new
setting until you change it again.

You can choose a small, medium, or large type size. You can choose a Courier or
System Monospace type font.

You may want to display the book in each type size and font to find the
combination that is easiest for you to read.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 34. Clear Item-Seen Check Marks ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Clear item-seen check marks on the Options pull-down in the Book window to
remove the check marks that are automatically inserted in the Table of
Contents, Search Results, Revisions, Figures, Tables, or Margin Notes List
window next to each item you have seen.

A check mark is inserted only if you displayed the topic, figure, table, or
note by selecting it from the list window itself. The list window must be
active to remove the check marks.

Clear item-seen check marks is unavailable until an active list that has check
marks has been displayed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 35. Tree ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Tree on the Options pull-down in the Book window to expand or collapse the
Table of Contents or the list in the Search Results window to display higher or
lower levels of detail.

You can select one of the following:

 Expand one level
           To expand the Table of Contents or the list in the Search Results
           window to show one more level of detail for the selected topic
 Expand one heading
           To expand the Table of Contents or the list in the Search Results
           window to show all levels of detail for the selected topic
 Expand all headings
           To expand the Table of Contents or the list in the Search Results
           window to show all levels of detail for all topics
 Collapse one heading
           To remove all detail within the selected topic in the Table of
           Contents or the list in the Search Results window
 Collapse all headings
           To show only the first level of detail in the Table of Contents or
           the list in the Search Results window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 36. Expand One Level ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Expand one level on the Options pull-down in the Book window to expand the
Table of Contents to show one lower level of detail for the selected topic.

You can also expand one level directly on the Table of Contents window by
clicking on the Plus (+) icon next to the topic number or identifier
(unnumbered name). When a topic has been expanded, a Minus (-) icon appears
next to it.

You can also expand the list in the Search Results window with these
techniques. Additional information is displayed about the search matches found
in the selected topic.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 37. Expand One Heading ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Expand one heading on the Options pull-down in the book window to expand
the Table of Contents to show all levels of detail for the selected topic.

You can also expand one heading directly on the Table of Contents window by
clicking on the Plus (+) icon next to each successive topic number or
identifier (unnumbered name) until the desired topic heading is fully expanded.
When a topic has been expanded, a Minus (-) icon appears next to it.

You can also expand the list in the Search Results window with these
techniques. Additional information is displayed about the search matches found
in the selected topic. Topics in the Search Results list can be expanded to
only one level.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 38. Expand All Headings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Expand all headings on the Options pull-down in the Book window to expand
the Table of Contents to show all levels of detail for all topics.

You can also expand the list in the Search Results window with this technique.
Additional information is displayed about the search matches found in all
topics.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Collapse One Heading ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Collapse one heading on the Options pull-down in the Book window to remove
the lower-level headings within the selected topic in the Table of Contents.

You can also collapse one heading directly on the Table of Contents window by
clicking on the Minus (-) icon next to the topic number or identifier
(unnumbered name). When a topic has been collapsed, a Plus (+) icon appears
next to it.

You can also collapse the list in the Search Results window with these
techniques. Additional information about the search matches found in the
selected topic is removed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Collapse All Headings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Collapse all headings on the Options pull-down in the Book window to remove
the lower-level headings within all of the topics in the Table of Contents.
Only the first-level topics are displayed.

You can also collapse the list in the Search Results window with this
technique. Additional information about the search matches found in all topics
is removed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 41. Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Window in the Book window action bar to change the arrangement of open
windows within the Book window, or to make one of the open windows active.

You can select one of the following:

 Tile
           To arrange the open windows so they are all visible and do not
           overlap. Only a portion of the contents of each window is shown.
 Cascade
           To arrange the open windows so they overlap, with the active window
           on top. The title of each window is visible.

 You may want to change the display of the open windows to view quickly windows
 that you are not using. However, you cannot return the display to its original
 arrangement without resizing and repositioning each open window.

 The Window pull-down also lists up to nine windows that are open within the
 Book window. If you have more than nine open windows, More windows shows as
 the tenth item. You can use More windows to display the More Windows window,
 which lists all of the open windows, including the first nine.

 Click on any window title in the list of open windows, or move the cursor to
 the window title and press Enter, to make that window active. Double-click on
 any window title in More Windows, or move the cursor to any window title and
 press Enter, to make that window active.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 42. Tile ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Tile on the Window pull-down in the Book window to arrange the open windows
so they are all visible.

The windows are the same size and are arranged side-by-side like floor tiles.
Part of the contents of each window is displayed. This arrangement completely
fills the Book window.

Use the list of open windows on the Window pull-down in the Book window to view

If more than nine windows are open, More windows appears at the end of the
pull-down. Click on More windows, or move the cursor to it and press Enter, to
display the More Windows window. This window lists all of the open windows,
including the first nine.

Click on any window title in the list of open windows, or move the cursor to
any window title and press Enter, to make that window active. Double-click on
any window title in More Windows, or move the cursor to any window title and
press Enter, to make that window active.

Use More windows on the Window pull-down in the Book window to display the More
Windows window.

You can use this window to view the titles of all of the open windows.

press Enter, to make that window active.

Use Extended help on the Help pull-down in a BookManager primary window to
display general information about the functions available in that window,
including its action bar and pull-down choices. You can also display extended
help for these windows by pressing F1 when nothing is selected and the cursor
is in a neutral area within the window, such as the text of a book.

If a secondary window is active, Extended help displays general information
about the active window and the selections available on it.

Extended help for pop-up windows also gives you an overview of the window and
how the different selections relate to one another. Extended help for pop-up
windows can be displayed by pressing F2 within a contextual help, or by
clicking on Extended help on the Help pull-down within a contextual help.
Contextual help gives you specific information about a selection.

Extended help for secondary and pop-up windows can also be displayed by moving
the cursor to the pushbuttons with the Tab key, then using the right arrow key
to move to the Help pushbutton, and pressing F1 or clicking on the Help
pushbutton.

Use Keys help on the Help pull-down in a BookManager primary window to display
a list of available shortcut keys and their definitions.

Shortcut keys allow you to complete an action or move to a window without
selecting it from a pull-down. Some shortcut keys are displayed to the right of
certain choices on the pull-downs.

You can also type the underlined letter on an action bar or pull-down choice to
complete that action. This technique works only while the pull-down is
displayed.

Example:

You can press Ctrl+H to retrace your path through topics instead of clicking on
Retrace topic path on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window. Also, you can
press Ctrl+/ in the Books and Bookshelves window or Bookshelf window to select
all of the entries in the list instead of clicking on Select all on the Group
pull-down.

Help is available for all BookManager windows. The type of help displayed is
determined by what you select before you request help or what task you are
doing when you request help.

Contextual help

Contextual help is help for a specific selection or entry area. To get
contextual help for:

 An action bar or pull-down choice:
           Position the cursor or hold down the mouse button on the choice and
           press F1.
 An entry area or a menu choice:
           Position the cursor or click on the choice, and press F1 or click on
           the Help pushbutton.
 A pushbutton at the bottom of a window (other than the Help pushbutton):
           Position the cursor on the pushbutton, and press F1 or click on the
           Help pushbutton.

 Extended help

 Extended help is help for an entire window. Extended help describes the
 selections on a window and how they relate to one another. To get extended
 help for:

 The Books and Bookshelves window or the Bookshelf window:
           Click on Extended help on the Help pull-down, or move the cursor to
           it and press Enter.
 The Book window:
           With the Topic window active, click on Extended help on the Help
           pull-down, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.
 A secondary window:
           With a secondary window active, click on Extended help on the Help
           pull-down, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.
 A secondary or pop-up window:
           With the cursor on the Help pushbutton, press F1 or click on the
           Help pushbutton.
 Any window, from within a contextual help:
           With a contextual help for that window active, click on Extended
           help on the Help pull-down within the contextual help window, or
           press F2.

 Message help

 Message help explains information, warning, and action messages and how to
 respond to them. An information message, indicated by a lowercase i, tells you
 that a computer function is performing normally or has performed normally.

 A warning message, indicated by an exclamation point, tells you that a
 potentially undesirable situation could occur. You must respond to a warning
 message to continue.

 An action message, indicated by a stop sign, tells you that a situation has
 occurred that must be corrected by some action.

 To get message help, press F1, click on the Help pushbutton, or move the
 cursor to the Help pushbutton and press Enter while the message is displayed.

 Reference phrase help

 Within the help window itself, reference phrase help gives additional
 information about words or phrases that are emphasized. To get to this help,
 double-click on the emphasized phrase, or move the cursor to the phrase and
 press Enter.

 Additional help

 From a BookManager primary window, you can select the following in addition to
 Extended help:

 o Keys help, which provides a list of available shortcut keys used in
   BookManager and the actions they perform
 o Help index, which provides an alphabetical list of subjects for which help
   is available
 o Getting started help, which provides information on making selections using
   the keyboard or the mouse and moving through a book.

Shortcut keys can be used in place of selecting actions from the action bar or
menus. All mouse interactions can be duplicated using the keyboard.

You can use either a mouse or the keyboard to make selections and move through
a list or a book.

Making selections using the mouse

In BookManager, all instructions to click or double-click the mouse button
refer to mouse button 1.

Usually, a single click is used to select (emphasize) a menu choice. A single
click on a pushbutton at the bottom of the window processes the selected
choices. A single click both selects and processes choices from an action bar
or pull-down. You can also use a double-click to both select and process
choices from a list or reference links.

For example, you can:

 o Open a book or a bookshelf by double-clicking on its name in the Books and
   Bookshelves window or the Bookshelf window.
 o Make an open window active by clicking on the window or by double-clicking
   on its icon if it has been minimized.
 o Select an action bar, pull-down, or pushbutton choice by positioning the
   pointer on the desired choice and clicking the mouse button.
 o Select a menu choice (radio button or check box) on a window by positioning
   the pointer on the desired choice and clicking the mouse button. Then
   process your selections by clicking on the desired pushbutton at the bottom
   of the window.
 o Display a topic, figure, table, or index subject by double-clicking on an
   entry in the Table of Contents, Figures, Tables, or Index window,
   respectively.
 o Expand a topic heading in the Table of Contents or the list in the Search
   Results window by clicking on the Plus (+) icon next to the topic number or
   identifier (unnumbered name). Collapse a topic heading by clicking on the
   Minus (-) icon next to the topic number or identifier.

 In the Books and Bookshelves window and the Bookshelf window, you can select
 more than one choice from the list. To select more than one book or bookshelf
 with a mouse, press and hold Ctrl while you click on each name or icon.

 If the choices you want to select are adjacent, click and hold the mouse
 button on the first name or icon. Drag the mouse button to the last name or
 icon, then release it.

 Making selections using the keyboard

 Use the Tab key to move from one area or group of choices to another,
 including the pushbuttons at the bottom of the window. Use the arrow keys to
 move to a selection within an entry group and from one pushbutton to the next.
 Press Enter to process the action after you have made your selections.

 o Open a book or a bookshelf by using the arrow keys to move the cursor to the
   desired choice. If the choice is not already emphasized, press the Spacebar
   to select it. Then press Enter.
 o Make an open window active within the Book window by selecting the Window
   pull-down, positioning the cursor on the desired choice, and pressing Enter.
 o Move from one primary window to another by pressing Alt+Esc.
 o Move to and from the action bar by pressing F10 or Alt.
 o Select from the action bar, pull-down, Table of Contents, Tables, Figures,
   or Index by using the arrow keys to move the cursor to the desired choice
   and pressing Enter.
 o Select a radio button on a window by using the arrow keys to move the cursor
   to the desired choice. Then process your selections by pressing Enter.
 o Select a check box on a window by using the arrow keys to move the cursor to
   the desired choice. Then press the Spacebar to select it. Process your
   selections by pressing Enter.
 o Selections from the action bar and pull-downs can also be made by typing the
   underlined letter while the pull-down is displayed.
 o Use the shortcut keys shown next to certain pull-down choices (for example,
   Ctrl+C) to select and enter your choice simultaneously.
 o To expand a topic heading:

     1. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to a topic in the Table of
        Contents or Search Results window that has a Plus (+) icon next to it.
     2. Press F10 or Alt to move to the action bar.
     3. Move the cursor to Tree on the Options pull-down and press Enter. Make
        a selection to expand and press Enter.

 o To collapse a topic heading:

     1. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to a topic in the Table of
        Contents or Search Results window that has a Minus (-) icon next to it.
     2. Press F10 or Alt to move to the action bar.
     3. Move the cursor to Tree on the Options pull-down and press Enter. Make
        a selection to collapse and press Enter.

 In the Books and Bookshelves window and the Bookshelf window, you can select
 more than one choice from the list.

 The Details or Name view must be in effect to select more than one book or
 bookshelf with the keyboard. To select more than one book or bookshelf with
 the keyboard, move the cursor to the name or icon of the first selection.
 Press the Spacebar to select it if it is not already emphasized. Press
 Shift+F8 to begin Add mode. Use the arrow keys to move to the name or icon of
 each additional book or bookshelf that you want to select and press the
 Spacebar. When you have finished selecting the books and bookshelves, press
 Shift+F8 again to end Add mode.

 Radio buttons, check boxes, and pushbuttons

 Radio buttons allow you to select only one choice from a group of selections.
 Click on a choice to select it, or use the arrow keys to move from one choice
 to another within a group. A radio button is darkened when it is selected.

 Check boxes allow you to select from a fixed group of choices. You can select
 multiple check boxes, one check box, or no check boxes. Click on a choice to
 select it, or use the arrow keys to move from one choice to another within a
 group and then press the Spacebar. Repeat this procedure to deselect the
 choice. When a check box is selected, the choice is marked with an X.

 Pushbuttons, which appear at the bottom of each window, are used to process
 your selections on a window. Click on a pushbutton to process your selections,
 or use the arrow keys to move from one pushbutton to the next and then press
 Enter. When a pushbutton is selected, the border surrounding it is darkened.

 Shortcut keys and icons

 Shortcut keys are available for many actions. Select Keys help on the Help
 pull-down to display a list of available keys and their definitions .

 Shortcut keys allow you to complete an action or move to a window without
 selecting it from a pull-down. Some shortcut keys are displayed to the right
 of certain choices on the pull-downs. For example, press Ctrl+C to display the
 Table of Contents window.

 You can also type the underlined letter on an action bar or pull-down choice
 to select that choice. This technique works only while the pull-down is
 displayed. For example, type the letter B from the GoTo pull-down in the Book
 window to display the Tables window.

 You can use the following icons to complete certain BookManager functions:

 Plus (+) icon
           To expand a topic heading in the Table of Contents or get more
           information about search matches in the Search Results window. To
           expand a heading, click on the Plus icon, or move the cursor to the
           heading and press + on the numeric key pad.
 Minus (-) icon
           To collapse a topic heading in the Table of Contents or remove the
           search match information from the Search Results window. To collapse
           a heading, click on the Minus icon, or move the cursor to the
           heading and press - on the numeric key pad.
 Note icon
           To view or edit a margin note in the book. To display a note,
           double-click on the Note icon, or move the cursor to the icon and
           press Enter.
 Book icon and Bookshelf icon
           When you first open the Books and Bookshelves window or the
           Bookshelf window, the book and bookshelf entries consist of icons
           and names only. To display a book or a bookshelf, double-click on
           the icon, or move the cursor to the icon and press Enter. If the
           entries are arranged in an Icon or Mini-icon view, they can be
           rearranged by dragging the mouse.

 Moving around

 You can move through text in the Topic window or entries in a list window
 (such as the Books and Bookshelves window or the Table of Contents) with a
 mouse by clicking on the up arrow or down arrow on the scroll bar.

 You can also drag the slider box in the scroll bar up or down to move through
 the text within a chapter. To drag the slider box, position the mouse pointer
 on the box, press and hold down the mouse button, and move the box up or down,
 right or left. Then release the mouse button.

 Use the PgUp or PgDn key on the keyboard to move the Topic window up or down
 within a chapter. You can move from topic to topic by using the Previous topic
 and Next topic pushbuttons on the Topic window.

 Hypertext or cross-reference links

 Hypertext or cross-reference links are included in a book by the author to
 direct you to another area of the book that contains related information, such
 as a figure, a table, or another topic.

 You can move to the referenced area by double-clicking on the emphasized text,
 or by moving the cursor to the emphasized text and pressing Enter. After you
 have viewed the related information, use Previous link or reference on the
 GoTo pull-down in the Book window to return to your original position in the
 book.

 Marking an area for printing or copying

 To mark an area of text to copy or print, position the mouse pointer on the
 character that begins the area you want to mark. Click and hold down the mouse
 button, then drag the pointer to the character that ends the area you want to
 mark. Release the mouse button.

 To mark an area with the keyboard, move the cursor to the character that
 begins the area you want to mark. Press the Spacebar to set the beginning of
 the mark. Then use the arrow keys to extend the marked area in any direction.
 To end the marked area, hold down the Shift key and press the Spacebar.

The Topic window is located within the Book window and displays the text of the
book. The topic number or identifier (unnumbered name) and the topic heading
are displayed at the top of the window.

The Topic window displays the following information when it is available in a
book:

 o The beginning text of the selected topic is displayed. You can view the
   entire topic by using the PgUp and PgDn keys or the scroll bar within a
   chapter. You can move from topic to topic by using the Previous topic and
   Next topic pushbuttons.
 o Icons (symbols) to the left of the text show the location of margin notes.
   Double-click on the Note icon, or move the cursor to the icon and press
   Enter, to display the margin note in the Margin Note window.
 o Hypertext or cross-reference links are emphasized words or phrases in the
   text. Double-click on the emphasized phrase, or move the cursor to the
   phrase and press Enter, to display the topic, figure, or table that is
   referenced. To go back to the beginning of the topic that contains your
   original position, click on Previous link or reference in the GoTo
   pull-down, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.
 o Revision symbols are displayed to the left of text that has been changed.
 o Footnotes are displayed at the end of each topic, at the end of each
   chapter, or at the end of the book.
 o Picture graphics appear in the text as graphics reference links (a picture
   name or number displayed in a contrasting color or shade). You can display a
   picture graphic in the Picture window by double-clicking on the graphics
   reference link, or by moving the cursor to the link and pressing Enter.
 o Character graphics (illustrations composed of text characters) are displayed
   where they appear in the text.

 The pushbuttons at the bottom of the Topic window allow you to move through a
 book by topic (Previous topic and Next topic) or to move to emphasized search
 matches (Previous match and Next match).

Use the Note icon in the Book window to view or change a margin note.

Use Previous topic in the Book window to move backward from the active topic to
the beginning of the preceding topic in the book. The active topic is the topic

Three kinds of windows are displayed in BookManager: primary windows, secondary
windows, and pop-up windows. It is important to know how the windows differ,
because some actions can be performed on one type of window but not on another.

Primary windows have action bars (for example, the Bookshelf window). Secondary
and pop-up windows are displayed within a primary window and do not have action
bars.

Usually, a secondary window displays or lists parts of a book, or the results
of processing a function (for example, the book Search Results window). Both
primary and secondary windows can be made smaller or larger, or reduced to the
size of an icon. Primary and secondary windows remain open until you close
them, even though they may not be the active windows.

Pop-up windows are generally used to process functions (for example, the View
by Name window and the Create Margin Note window). A pop-up window cannot be
sized or reduced to an icon, and you cannot perform any other functions while
it is open. A pop-up window closes once you process the function.

An easy visual clue to distinguish secondary windows from pop-up windows is

Use Book Description to display additional information about the active book.

The descriptive information can include the title, the author, the date, the
document number, and the complete path and file name.

           help for the Book Description window, use the Tab key to move the
           cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move to the

 The Book Description window is displayed when you click on Describe on the
 Books pull-down in the Book window, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.

           To delete the previous bookmark and open the book to its first topic
           the next time you open it.

 Use the following pushbuttons:

 Close
           To close the active book.
 Cancel
           To return to the Topic window without closing the active book.

           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Close Book window, use the Tab key to move the
           cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move to the

 Each open book is a separate BookManager session, and you must close each
 active session separately. When the last session is closed, you return to the
 window that preceded it.

 Note that any file you send to print must be in the OS/2 Print Manager printer
 queue before you close the book or it will not print. A large text file, an
 image file, or a graphics file may take a few minutes to format and reach the
 printer queue.

 The Close Book window is displayed when you click on Close on the Books
 pull-down in the Book window, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 67. Keep the Current Closing Bookmark ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Keep the current closing bookmark in the Close Book window to return to the
previously set bookmark the next time you open the book. The book continues to
open to the same topic each time you select Keep the current closing bookmark,
until you reset the bookmark.

Keep the current closing bookmark is unavailable if there is no current
bookmark.

Use Place the closing bookmark in the Close Book window to return to the
currently active topic the next time you open the book. Any previous bookmark
that you may have set is canceled.

Use Close without a closing bookmark in the Close Book window to delete the
previously set bookmark from the book. The book will open to its first topic

revisions (for example, revisions made on different dates or by different
authors).

After you select a topic from the list, use Go to or double-click on your
selection to display the revised topic in the Topic window.

cursor to the topic and pressing Enter, if the Go to pushbutton is selected. A
topic that you select from the Topics Seen List window is not added to the list
of topics seen.

unknown words or characters. You can change the wildcard character by typing a
new character in the Wildcard character area.

           To search the entire book for the specified words or phrases using
           the current search options. When the search is complete, the results
           are displayed as specified in the Search Options window.
 Find next
           To search the entire book for the specified words and phrases using
           the current search options, and emphasize the next match in the

           view the other emphasized matches.
 Retrieve
           To display the search words and phrases and the search options used
           in the last 10 searches of the book, starting with the most recent
           search.
 Options
           To select the scope, match type, and display style of the search.

           similarly to the word selected in the Search words and phrases area.

           To return to the Topic window without searching for a word or
           phrase.

Type each word or phrase to be searched for on a separate line in the Search
Book or Search Selected Topic window. Move the cursor to the end of the line
and press Enter to move to the next line.

All of the words and phrases that you enter in the Search words and phrases
area are searched for. You can scroll or page through the list of search words
and phrases.

If you enter several search words on a single line, BookManager looks for all
of the words in that phrase. If you enter several search words on separate
lines, BookManager looks for a match to any of the words.

The maximum length of each word is 60 characters and the maximum number of
characters in the entry area is 255, including an end-of-line character for
each separate search word or phrase. Long phrases extend beyond the input area
and can be scrolled or paged through in either direction.

You can press Shift+Ins to insert text from the OS/2 clipboard into the Search
words and phrases area. See your OS/2 documentation for more information on the
clipboard.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 83. Wildcard Character ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Wildcard character in the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window to
specify the wildcard character used to substitute for unknown characters or
words in a search. Type the wildcard character as part of your search word or
phrase wherever you are uncertain about a character or word for which you want
to search.

The initial value for the wildcard character is an asterisk (*). You can change
the value in the Wildcard character area if the words or phrases you are
searching for already contain an asterisk as part of the search text.

Use a character that is not likely to be found in the book. If you use a
character that you may want to find as part of a search, your search results
will be inaccurate.

When you change the wildcard character, it remains changed on each subsequent
Search Book, Search Selected Topic, and Search Bookshelf window.

Example:

You set the wildcard character to #. If you search for the phrase terminal 1#,
your search results include every phrase that begins with terminal 1 (for
example, terminal 12 or terminal 153).

Use Search in the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window to begin your
search after you type your search words and phrases and check your search
options.

Use Find next in the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window to display the
first search match, starting with the top line in the Topic window. When a
search match is found, the line that contains the match is displayed as the top
line in the Topic window. All of the search matches are emphasized within the
text unless you have turned Emphasize matches off on the Search pull-down in
the Book window.

You can use the Next match and Previous match pushbuttons to move through the
other search matches.

The matches found during the search are active until the next search, whether
the emphasis is on or off. Actions other than search do not change the active
condition of the matches.

Find next is unavailable if there are no entries in the Search words and
phrases area.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 86. Retrieve ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Retrieve in the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window to display the
preceding set of search words in the Search words and phrases area. You can use
retrieved search words and phrases as if you typed them in, or you can add to
them or change them.

The options used for that search are also in effect. For example, if you select
a topic for the current search and then retrieve a previous search for the
entire book, the entire book is searched.

Retrieve can be repeated to display the search words and phrases for the last
10 searches of the book.

Retrieve is unavailable if there are no previous searches.

Use Options in the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window to display the
Search Options window.

You can use this window to specify the scope and match type for your search,
and how the search results are displayed.

Use Word check in the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window to display
the Word Check window.

You can use this window to view a list of words in the active book that are

begin a search.

Word check is unavailable if there are no entries in the Search words and
phrases area.

A wildcard character is used to substitute for unknown or unspecified
characters or words in a word or phrase. The unspecified characters can include
letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and spaces.

A wildcard character that is used in a word to substitute for unknown
characters must be the last character in the word. A wildcard character that is
used in a phrase to substitute for an unknown word or words can be placed after
any word in the phrase. When you select an exact match in the Search Options
window, a wildcard character substitutes for only one word.

The initial value for the wildcard character is an asterisk (*). You can change
the search wildcard character on the Search Book, Search Selected Topic, or the
Search Bookshelf window. If you change it, the new wildcard remains in effect
on each subsequent Search Book, Search Selected Topic, and Search Bookshelf
window.

Type the wildcard character in your search word or phrase wherever you are
uncertain about a character or word you want to search for.

Example:

You want to search for all words in a book that begin with pre. Type pre* in
the Search Book window to include prerelease and predefine.

Use Search Selected Topic to find specific target words and phrases in a topic
selected in the Table of Contents window.

Use Search Results to view a list of the topics that were found to contain
matches to your search words and phrases during a search.

You can use Label to identify a search or to change the label identifying this
search.

Some areas display additional information about the search results. You can
view the following:

 Topics with matches
           To show the number of topics with matches.
 List of topics
           To view the headings of topics that contain matches. You can click
           on the Plus (+) icon next to the topic that contains a match, or
           move the cursor to the topic and press + on the numeric key pad, to
           display additional information about the search results. Use this
           list to select a topic to display. You can scroll or page through
           the list of topics.

 Use the following pushbuttons:

 Go to
           To display the selected topic in the Topic window.
 Cancel
           To return to the previous window without displaying the search
           matches.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Search Results window, use the Tab key to move
           the cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move to the
           Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press Enter.

 The Search Results window is displayed when you perform a search for a word or
 phrase, and you select Listed by importance or Listed by topic number in the
 Search Options window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 92. Label ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Label in the Search Results window to identify a particular search during
the active BookManager session. The label contains the first few words from
your list of search words and phrases. If you reduce the Search Results window
to an icon, the label is displayed as the name of the window.

The label is initially assigned by the program when you begin a search.
However, you can change the label by typing a new name over the old one.

If you have reduced more than one Search Results window to an icon, and if the
labels are the same, you may want to change one of the labels to help
distinguish between the two windows.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 93. List of Topics with Matches ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the list of topics in the Search Results window to select a topic that
contains a match for your search words and phrases. The list shows the number
or identifier (unnumbered name) and heading of each topic containing a match.
This list is ordered either by the importance of the match or sequentially by
topic number depending on your selection in the Search Options window. You can
scroll or page through the list of topics.

If you selected Listed by importance on the Search Options window, only the
best 200 topics with matches are listed. If you selected Listed by topic
number, all of the search matches are listed.

Click on the Plus (+) icon next to the topic number, or move the cursor to the
topic and press + on the numeric key pad, to display the first line that
contains a match in that topic. When a topic has been expanded, a Minus (-)
icon appears next to the topic heading. Click on the Minus icon, or move the
cursor to the topic and press - on the numeric key pad, to remove the detail
below the topic heading.

An Index icon next to the line that contains a match tells you that the search
match does not appear in the Topic window, but in the Index window. The Index
icon is similar to the icon that is displayed when you minimize the Index
window. When you select a match with an Index icon, the topic that is
referenced by that entry in the Index is displayed in the Topic window.

Use Go to in the Search Results window to display the selected topic in the
Topic window. The search matches are emphasized unless you turned Emphasize

Use the Plus (+) icon to display additional information about topics with
matches in the Search Results window. The following information is displayed:

 Note:   When a topic has been expanded, a Minus (-) icon appears next to it.

Use Search Options to select the scope and match type for your search and to
specify how to display the search results.

You can use the following:

 Scope
           To search the entire book or the topic selected in the Table of
           Contents window. The preselected choice for Scope depends on whether
           the Table of Contents window is active. Selected topic is
           unavailable if Figures, Tables, Index, or Contents is selected in
           the Table of Contents window.

           Note:   If you change the scope of the search, the title bar of the
           Search Book or Search Selected Topic window is changed to reflect
           the new scope.
 Match type
           To search for a word or phrase that is a fuzzy (inexact) match to
           the search word or phrase; a word or phrase that is an exact match,
           regardless of case (capitalization); or a word or phrase that is an
           exact match, including case.
 Show results
           To list matches by importance (which is determined by frequency and
           similarity) or by topic number (in sequential order), or simply to
           emphasize the matches in the text.

           Listed by importance is unavailable if Selected topic is the scope
           of the search.

 Use the following pushbuttons:

 Set
           To save your selections and return to the Search Book or Search
           Selected Topic window.
 Cancel
           To return to the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window without
           changing any of the search options.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Search Options window, use the Tab key to move
           the cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move to the
           Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press Enter.

 The Search Options window is displayed when you click on Options in the Search
 Book or Search Selected Topic window, or move the cursor to it and press

Search Book window is replaced by the Search Selected Topic window.

Use Scope: Selected topic in the Search Options window to search only the topic
selected in the Table of Contents window for matches to your search words and
phrases.

choice for Scope. However, if the Table of Contents is active and Figures,
Tables, Index, or Table of Contents is selected, Selected topic is unavailable.

If you change the scope of your search from Selected topic to Entire book, the
Search Selected Topic window is replaced by the Search Book window.

Use Match type: Fuzzy in the Search Options window to search for alternative
forms of the search words or phrases. A fuzzy search matches different forms of
the same root word.

Example:

A search for the word is matches the words are, were, and was. A search for the
word complete matches the words completing and completed.

Use Match type: Exact, any case in the Search Options window to search for

the topic with the match completing.

the search matches as emphasized words and phrases in the text of the Topic
window. You might select Emphasized in text if you expect to find only a few
matches to the search word or phrase and you want to view them all.

When you select Emphasized in text, the Search Results window is not displayed.
Instead, a message is displayed to indicate that the search is complete, and
the first match appears in a different color or shade than normal text in the
first line in the Topic window.

You can move through the search matches with the Next match and Previous match
pushbuttons.

The search matches remain emphasized until you:

 o Search for another word or phrase
 o Close the Search Results window
 o Double-click on a topic listed in another open Search Results window, or
   move the cursor to the topic and select the Go to pushbutton
 o Turn Emphasize matches off on the Search pull-down in the Book window.

 A check mark next to Emphasize matches indicates that the emphasis is turned
 on. To turn the emphasis back on if it is off, click on Emphasize matches on
 the Search pull-down in the Book window or move the cursor to it and press
 Enter.

 Use Set colors on the Options pull-down in the Book window to change the
 display color for search matches.

can use this list to choose a word to replace the word selected in the Search
words and phrases area.

 Replace
           To replace the word selected in the Search words and phrases area
           with the word selected from the word check list.
 Cancel
           To return to the Search Book or Search Selected Topic window without
           replacing a word in the Search words and phrases area.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Word Check window, use the Tab key to move the
           cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move to the
           Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press Enter.

 The Word Check window is displayed when you click on Word check in the Search
 Book or Search Selected Topic window, or move the cursor to it and press
 Enter.

           To return to the Topic window without saving the margin note.

 file is the same as the book's file name except that it has a file extension

 The Create Margin Note window is displayed when you click on Create on the
 Notes pull-down, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.

           Monospace type font.

 You may want to display the book in each type size and font to find the
 combination that is easiest to read. With medium and large type, you may have

           To display the text characters of the book in the type size and font
           that you selected.
 Cancel
           To return to the Topic window without changing the type size and
           font.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display

           to the Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press
           Enter.

 The Set Character Style window is displayed when you click on Set character

amount of space, regardless of how wide or narrow it is. For example, an m
takes up the same space as an i.

Use System Monospace in the Set Character Style window to display the text

The Table of Contents lists all the topic numbers and identifiers (unnumbered
names) in a book in sequential order.

When you double-click on a topic in the Table of Contents, or move the cursor
to it and press Enter, that topic is displayed in the Topic window.

You can change the level of detail in the Table of Contents by using the Plus
(+) icon or Minus (-) icon next to the topics. When you click on a Plus icon,
or move the cursor to the topic and press + on the numeric key pad, the Table
of Contents expands to show another level of the topic's detail.

When you click on a Minus icon, or move the cursor to the topic and press - on
the numeric key pad, the detail under that topic is removed.

You can also change the level of detail in the Table of Contents by using the
choices on the Tree selection on the Options pull-down in the Book window.

After you view a topic that you have selected through the Table of Contents
window, a check mark appears in the Table of Contents to the left of that topic
to show that you have seen it. The topic is also added to the Topics Seen List
window.

The Table of Contents window can be moved and sized. You can minimize it to
display it as an icon. Double-click on the icon, or move the cursor to Table of
Contents on the Window pull-down and press Enter, to restore the window to its
original size and position.

When the Table of Contents window is active, and FIGURES, TABLES, INDEX, or
CONTENTS is selected, the following pull-down choices are unavailable in the
Book window:

 o Search selected topic on the Search pull-down
 o Copy to clipboard on the Services pull-down
 o Print selected topic on the Services pull-down.

 The Table of Contents window is displayed when you click on Table of Contents
 in the GoTo pull-down, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 136. Plus ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Click on the Plus (+) icon to expand a heading in the Table of Contents window
to show the next level of detail. You can also show more detail by moving the
cursor to the topic heading and pressing + on the numeric key pad.

Note:   When a topic has been expanded, a Minus (-) icon appears next to that
heading.

Click on the Minus (-) icon to collapse a heading in the Table of Contents or a

to that heading.

The Index is a list of all of the subjects in a book in alphabetical order.

If the book has an index, you can display it by clicking on Index on the GoTo
pull-down in the Book window, or by moving the cursor to it and pressing Enter.

Index is unavailable if the author has not created an index.

You can also display the index by double-clicking on INDEX in the Table of
Contents window, or by moving the cursor to INDEX and pressing Enter.

To move quickly through the index, type the first letter of the subject you
want to view. The first index entry beginning with that letter is selected.
Double-click on a topic in an index entry, or move the cursor to the topic and
press Enter, to display the topic in the Topic window.

The Index window can be moved and sized. You can minimize it to display it as
an icon. Double-click on the icon, or move the cursor to Index on the Window
pull-down in the Book window and press Enter, to restore the window to its
original size and location.

Close the Index window by double-clicking on the System Menu icon within the
Index window, or by moving the cursor to Close on the System Menu pull-down and
pressing Enter.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 139. Figures ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Figures window is a sequential list of the numbered illustrations in the
book.

Double-click on a figure title, or move the cursor to the title and press
Enter, to display the figure in the Topic window. If the figure contains a
picture graphic, a picture name or number is displayed in a contrasting color
or shade as a graphics reference link within the text. You can view the figure
in the Picture window by double-clicking on the graphics reference link, or by
moving the cursor to the link and pressing Enter.

If the book has a Figures window, you can display it by clicking on Figure list
on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window, or by moving the cursor to it and
pressing Enter.

Figure list is unavailable if the author has not created a list of figures.

You can also display the Figures window by double-clicking on FIGURES in the
Table of Contents window, or by moving the cursor to FIGURES and pressing
Enter.

The Figures window can be moved and sized. You can minimize it to display it as
an icon. Double-click on the icon, or move the cursor to Figures on the Window
pull-down in the Book window and press Enter, to restore the window to its
original size and location.

Close the Figures window by double-clicking on the System Menu icon within the
Figures window, or by moving the cursor to Close on the System Menu pull-down
and pressing Enter.

The Tables window is a sequential list of the numbered tables in the book.
Double-click on a table title, or move the cursor to the title and press Enter,
to display the table in the Topic window.

If the book has a Tables window, you can display it by clicking on Table list
on the GoTo pull-down in the Book window, or by moving the cursor to it and
pressing Enter.

Table list is unavailable if the author has not created a list of tables.

You can also display the Tables window by double-clicking on TABLES in the
Table of Contents window, or by moving the cursor to TABLES and pressing Enter.

The Tables window can be moved and sized. You can minimize it to display it as
an icon. Double-click on the icon, or move the cursor to Tables on the Window
pull-down in the Book window and press Enter, to restore the window to its
original size and location.

Close the Tables window by double-clicking on the System Menu icon within the
Tables window, or by moving the cursor to Close on the System Menu pull-down
and pressing Enter.

The Picture window, which is located within the Topic window, displays the
graphic illustrations in the book. The picture name or number, as shown in the
graphics reference link, is displayed at the top of the window.

Each figure or illustration that is displayed in the Picture window is assigned
a picture name or number. The graphics reference link is that picture name or
number emphasized in the text as a different color or shade and set off from
the other text on a separate line.

If a book was built using Release 1 of BookManager BUILD, the graphics
reference link is a picture name, which is the same as the original picture
file name. If a book was built using Release 2 of BookManager BUILD or later,
the links are picture numbers, which are numbered sequentially.

You can double-click on a graphics reference link in the text, or move the
cursor to the link and press Enter, to display the picture graphic in reduced
size in the Picture window.

If the picture graphic is not displayed immediately, a progress indicator
measures the time until the picture is displayed.

The Picture window can be moved and sized. You can maximize it to full size, or
minimize it to an icon. Double-click on the icon, or move the cursor to the
picture name on the Window pull-down in the Book window and press Enter, to
restore the window to its original size and location.

If the maximized picture does not fit in the Picture window, use the scroll
bars to see the entire picture.

Graphics must be printed on a graphics printer. To print graphics, click on
Print picture on the Services pull-down in the Book window, or move the cursor
to it and press Enter, while the Picture window is active.

If the entire picture does not print because it is too wide, change the page
orientation of the printer from Portrait to Landscape. Refer to your OS/2 Print
Manager documentation for more information.

Close the Picture window by double-clicking on the System Menu icon within the
Picture window, or by moving the cursor to Close on the System Menu pull-down
and pressing Enter.

Use More Windows to display the titles of all of the open windows within the
Book window. You can use this list to select the title of the window you want
to make active.

directory that is not in the books and bookshelves path, it may be in the wrong
format, or it may be corrupted. It may also be included in a prebuilt
bookshelf, even though the book is not on your computer system.

Action:

Make sure that the book file name and the path name are correct, that it is in
BookManager format, that it is in the books and bookshelves path, and that it
is on your computer system.

Use Close all on the Books pull-down in the Books and Bookshelves window to
close all of the books and bookshelves that you opened from the Books and

Close all is unavailable if no books or bookshelves have been opened from the
Books and Bookshelves window. Any books or bookshelves that you have opened
from the command line remain open.

Use Exit BookManager on the Books pull-down to close all of the books and

 effect. When you change from one view to another, the books and bookshelves
 that you have selected remain selected. However, when you refresh the list,

were selected are deselected.

bookshelf.

When the bookshelf is successfully created, the list will be refreshed. All of
the books and bookshelves that were previously selected will be deselected.

Use Copy bookshelf on the Group pull-down in the Books and Bookshelves window
to display the Copy Bookshelf window.

You can use this window to copy a selected bookshelf and save it with a

the Books and Bookshelves window.

When the bookshelf is successfully created, the list will be refreshed. All of
the books and bookshelves that were previously selected will be deselected.

Copy bookshelf is unavailable if no bookshelf is selected.

You can use a BookManager bookshelf to organize or group together all related
books or the books you use most often. BookManager organizes and displays all
of the books and bookshelves in the books and bookshelves path in the Books and
Bookshelves window. When you start BookManager, you can choose to work only
with the books in a specific bookshelf.

Some of the books in the bookshelf may not be on your system and cannot be
opened. However, if the bookshelf has a search index, you can still search
these books for specific words and phrases and list the books in the order of
importance of their search matches. This may help you decide which books to
obtain.

You can create or copy bookshelves in the Books and Bookshelves window, or
build them on a host computer using BookManager BUILD.

When a bookshelf is built on the host computer, the information in each book is
organized into a search index for the bookshelf.

This search index enables BookManager to search the books in a bookshelf more
rapidly. You can download the bookshelf file and the search index file from the
host computer to use them with BookManager.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 241. Book and Bookshelf Icons ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Icons, or picture symbols, are used in the Books and Bookshelves window and in
the Bookshelf window to represent books and bookshelves. The book icon
resembles an open book. The bookshelf icon resembles a group of books. To open
a bookshelf or a book, double-click on the icon.

When the Books and Bookshelves window or the Bookshelf window is arranged in an
Icon or Mini-icon view, the icons and file names can be moved into any
arrangement you prefer by dragging with the mouse.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 242. Search Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A bookshelf search index increases the speed with which bookshelf searches can
be performed. A bookshelf created with a BookManager host computer program may
be associated with a search index. The search index contains a list of all the
words in the bookshelf.

The Book Description window (if it is opened from the Bookshelf window) and the
Bookshelf Description window specify whether a book or bookshelf is associated
with a search index file. Because the search index is created by a BookManager
host computer program, the search index cannot be changed within BookManager.

If you add a new book to a bookshelf that has a search index, the new book is
not added to the search index. You can include books that are not in the search
index in a bookshelf search. However, the search may be slower because each
book that is not in the index must be opened and searched individually.

A bookshelf search index may include books that are not on your system. This
lets you search the bookshelf for words and phrases in books that you do not
have and list them in the order of importance of their search matches, so that
you can decide whether to obtain them.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 243. OS/2 Wildcard Character ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

An asterisk (*) is used in OS/2 as a wildcard character to substitute for
unknown or unspecified letters or numbers in a file name. The OS/2 wildcard
character cannot be changed within BookManager.

An asterisk must be the last character in the file name. If an asterisk is the
only character in the file name, all of the books or bookshelves that satisfy
the View by Name window criteria are displayed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 244. Books and Bookshelves Path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The books and bookshelves path defines for your system the location of books
and bookshelves that are displayed in the Books and Bookshelves window.

The entire path can consist of a single drive and directory specification, or
it can include multiple specifications. Whenever the fully qualified file name
for a selected file is not available to the system, the system searches each
drive and directory specification in the books and bookshelves path for the
selected file.

You can specify which drives and directories your system searches for books and
bookshelves when you install BookManager.

You can also change the path for the current session only. Use Change path on
the View pull-down in the Books and Bookshelves window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 245. Create Bookshelf ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Create Bookshelf to create a new empty bookshelf and to specify its file
name, descriptive title, and directory.

Type the 8-character file name of the new bookshelf in the Name area. Type the
descriptive title of the new bookshelf in the Title area. Type the path,
including the directory, in the Path area. Title and Path are optional.

Use the following pushbuttons:

 Create
           To create the new bookshelf with the specified name, title, and
           path.
 Cancel
           To return to the previous window without creating a new bookshelf.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Create Bookshelf window, use the Tab key to
           move the cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move
           to the Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press
           Enter.

 The Create Bookshelf window is displayed when you click on Create bookshelf on
 the Group pull-down in the Books and Bookshelves window, or move the cursor to
 it and press Enter.

In the Create Bookshelf window, type the 8-character file name of the bookshelf
that you want to create.

bookshelf that you want to create. The maximum number of characters in the
title is 80. The title that you type in this area is displayed in the title bar
of the Bookshelf window when you open the bookshelf.

This is not a required field. If you do not type a title, the 8-character
bookshelf file name is displayed in the title bar.

In the Create Bookshelf window, type the path of the bookshelf that you want to
create, including the directory.

This is not a required field. If you do not type a path, the bookshelf is
stored in the first directory in the books and bookshelves path. The first
directory in the books and bookshelves path is specified during BookManager
installation, and is displayed in the Path area when you open the Create
Bookshelf window.

descriptive title of the new bookshelf in the Title area. Type the path,
including the directory, in the Path area. If the original bookshelf has a
search index, the new bookshelf uses the same search index.

directory in the books and bookshelves path is specified during BookManager
installation, and is displayed in the Path area when you open the Copy
Bookshelf window.

one or more characters in the name. For example, to display all the books and
bookshelves that begin with USERG, type userg* in the Name area.

If an asterisk is the only character in the Name area, all of the books and
bookshelves that satisfy the other selection criteria in the window are
displayed.

After typing a book or bookshelf name, you must select one or both of the

 Books
           To include all the books that match the name specified in the Name
           area

that begin with USERG, type userg* in the Name area. Then select both Books and
Bookshelves.

If an asterisk is the only character in the Name area, all of the books and

View is unavailable if the Name area is empty, or if neither Books nor
Bookshelves is selected.

Use the BookManager Bookshelf window to view and work with a list of the online
books in a bookshelf. When you open a bookshelf, its title is displayed in the
title bar at the top of the window.

You can select one or more books. To select a single book, click on the name or
icon. With the keyboard, use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the name.
Press the Spacebar to select the name if it is not already emphasized.

To select more than one book with a mouse, press and hold Ctrl while you click
on each name or icon.

The Details or Name view must be in effect to select more than one book with
the keyboard. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the first book or
bookshelf that you want to select. Press the Spacebar to select the name if it
is not already emphasized. Press Shift+F8 to begin Add mode. Use the arrow keys
to move the cursor to each additional book that you want to select and press
the Spacebar. When you have finished selecting the books, press Shift+F8 again
to end Add mode.

Some of the books in the bookshelf may not be on your system and cannot be
opened. However, if the bookshelf has a search index, you can still search
these books for specific words and phrases. This may help you decide which
books to obtain.

The action bar below the window title contains keywords that let you work with
the list of books. Click on one of these keywords, or move the cursor to it and
press Enter, to display a pull-down list that lets you do one of the following:

 Books
           To open a book, get more information about a book, or close the
           Bookshelf window.
 View
           To change the content or appearance of the list of books.
 Search
           To search a bookshelf for words and phrases or turn the search match
           icon on or off in the bookshelf list.
 Group
           To put books into a bookshelf, remove books from a bookshelf, or
           select or deselect all the entries in the list of books.
 Help
           To learn how to get help and view extended help for the Bookshelf
           window. You can also review shortcut key definitions, the help
           index, an explanation of moving around and making selections in
           BookManager, and copyright and version information for the program.

 The status line is displayed just below the action bar. It shows the number of
 books in the list you are currently viewing, followed by the total number of
 books available in the bookshelf.

Use Describe on the Books pull-down in the Bookshelf window to display the Book
Description window.

Each window displays additional information about a selected book, including
the title, the document number, the complete path and file name, and whether
the book is associated with the bookshelf search index. In addition, the book
description may include the author and the date.

Describe is unavailable if no book is selected.

Use Close on the Books pull-down in the Bookshelf window to close the Bookshelf
window. If the Bookshelf window is the last BookManager window to be closed,

           To display the names of the books in horizontal rows with small,
           movable icons
 Details
           To display a table of descriptive information about all of the books
           in the list

           To adjust the list to display all of the books in the bookshelf

 By name
           To adjust the list to display only specified books
 Sort by
           To arrange the current list of books in alphabetical order, either
           by file name or title, or in order of search results importance

           To update the list of books to reflect any changes to the bookshelf.

 If there is a check mark next to a choice, then that view is currently in
 effect.

to see more of them at one time than you can display with the Icon view.

           To arrange the books in the order of importance determined by the
           most recent bookshelf search.

Use Sort by: Name on the View pull-down in the Bookshelf window to arrange the

When you sort the list by name, books that are in the Name view remain in

In an Icon or Mini-icon view, Name puts any books that you have rearranged back
into horizontal rows.

Use Sort by: Search results importance on the View pull-down in the Bookshelf
window to arrange the list of books in the order of importance determined by

The books in which search matches are found are indicated by a search match
icon, which resembles a book icon with a magnifying glass superimposed on it.
The book that contains the best search match is listed first.

Sort by: Search results importance is unavailable if no search has been
performed on the bookshelf, or if Hide results is currently in effect on the
Search pulldown.

Use Refresh on the View pull-down in the Bookshelf window to update the list of
books.

You may want to refresh the Bookshelf window to account for any books that have
been added to or removed from the bookshelf since the active session began, or
since the list was last refreshed. When you refresh the list, all of the books
that were selected are deselected.

Use Search in the Bookshelf window action bar to look in the selected books for
specific words and phrases, and display an icon next to the books that contain
search matches.

           bookshelf search index that are spelled similarly to the selected
           word, and determine how search results are displayed

           To switch the search match icon on in the list of books

 selected.

Use Search bookshelf on the Search pull-down in the Bookshelf window to display
the Search Bookshelf window.

You can use this window to specify your search words and phrases, change your
search wildcard character, display a list of words in the bookshelf search
index that are spelled similarly to a selected word, determine how search
results are displayed, and start the search.

Search bookshelf searches all of the books that you have selected in the
current list. If no book is selected, Search bookshelf searches all of the
books in the current list.

The current bookshelf list may not contain all of the books in the bookshelf,
depending on how you have changed the view. If you want to search the entire
bookshelf, select All on the View pull-down, then select Select all on the
Group pull-down.

Use Show results on the Search pull-down in the Bookshelf window to display a
search match icon next to each book in the Bookshelf window that contains a
bookshelf search match. The search match icon resembles a book icon with a

When Show results is in effect and you open a book that contains matches from a
bookshelf search, the Search Results window for that book is displayed within
the Book window.

Show results is unavailable if it is already in effect, or if no bookshelf
search has been performed.

Use Hide results on the Search pull-down in the Bookshelf window to turn off
the search match icon next to each book in the Bookshelf window that contains a
bookshelf search match. The search match icon resembles a book icon with a

If you turn on Hide results after performing a bookshelf search, the book
Search Results window will not be displayed when you open a book in which
matches were found, nor will search matches be emphasized in the Topic window.

Hide results is unavailable if it is already in effect, or if no bookshelf
search has been performed.

Use Remove from bookshelf on the Group pull-down in the Bookshelf window to
remove from the bookshelf any books that you have selected. A message window is
displayed asking you to confirm whether you want to remove the selected books
(Yes) or return to the Bookshelf window without removing them (No).

The books that are removed from the bookshelf are not deleted from your system.
If the books are in the books and bookshelves path, they are still displayed in
the Books and Bookshelves window.

Remove from bookshelf is unavailable if no book is selected, or if the
bookshelf file is read-only.

Use Put into Bookshelf to put one or more books that you selected in the Books
and Bookshelves window or the Bookshelf window into a bookshelf. The number of
books that you selected is displayed at the top of the window in the Number of
books selected area.

Use To bookshelf to specify the file name of the bookshelf to which the
selected books are to be added. Select a bookshelf file name from the list of
available bookshelves and the name is inserted in the To bookshelf entry area,
or type the file name of a new bookshelf in this area.

Use the following pushbuttons:

 Put
           To add the selected books to the specified bookshelf.
 Cancel
           To return to the previous window without adding any books.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Put into Bookshelf window, use the Tab key to
           move the cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move
           to the Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press
           Enter.

 The Put into Bookshelf window is displayed when you click on Put into
 bookshelf on the Group pull-down in the Books and Bookshelves window or the
 Bookshelf window, or move the cursor to Put into bookshelf and press Enter.

 Put into bookshelf is unavailable if no book is selected or if a bookshelf is
 selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 288. To Bookshelf ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use To bookshelf in the Put into Bookshelf window to specify the bookshelf to
which the selected books are to be added. You can scroll or page through the
list of bookshelves.

Select a bookshelf from the To bookshelf list by clicking on the name or moving
the cursor to it. If the bookshelf you want is not listed, type the 8-character
file name of the bookshelf in the entry area.

If the bookshelf does not exist in the books and bookshelves path, a message is
displayed asking if you want to create a new bookshelf (Yes) or return to the
Put into Bookshelf window without creating the bookshelf (No).

Use Put in the Put into Bookshelf window to add the selected books to the
specified bookshelf. The selected books are then available in both the original
bookshelf and the new bookshelf.

Use View by Name to specify the books that are displayed in the Bookshelf
window.

Type the file name of the book you want to include in the Name area. You can
use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard in the Name area to stand for one or more
characters in the name. For example, to display all the books that begin with
USERG, type userg* in the Name area.

If an asterisk is the only character in the Name area, all of the books that
satisfy the other selection criteria in the window are displayed.

After typing a book name, select one or both of the following:

 Books with search matches
           To include all the books that match the name specified in the Name
           area, and contain search matches
 Books in search index
           To include all the books that match the name specified in the Name
           area, and are included in the bookshelf search index.

 Use the following pushbuttons:

 View
           To display the specified books in the Bookshelf window.
 Cancel
           To return to the previous window without specifying the books to
           display.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the View by Name window, use the Tab key to move
           the cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move to the
           Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press Enter.

 The status line, which is located just below the action bar, is updated to
 show the number of books in the list you are currently viewing, followed by
 the total number of books available in the bookshelf.

 The View by Name window is displayed when you click on By name on the View
 pull-down in the Bookshelf window, or move the cursor to it and press Enter.

In the View by Name window, type the 8-character file name of the book you want
to display in the Bookshelf window. Do not type a file extension.

You can use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard character to stand for one or more
characters in the name. For example, to display all the books in the bookshelf
search index that begin with USERG, type userg* in the Name area. Then select
Books in search index.

If an asterisk is the only character in the Name area, all of the books that
satisfy the other selection criteria in the window are displayed.

An asterisk is the initial value in the Name area.

Select Books with search matches in the View by Name window to display the
books that are specified in the Name area, and have search matches. An X is

displayed.

Use Search Bookshelf to find specific target words and phrases in selected
books in the Bookshelf window.

The number of books selected for the bookshelf search and the total number of
books in the bookshelf are displayed in the Number of books to be searched
area.

Type the words or phrases you want to find in the Search words and phrases
area. Start each word or phrase on a new line by pressing Enter.

The character used as a search wildcard is displayed in the Wildcard character
area. Use the wildcard in a search word or phrase to substitute for unknown
words or characters. You can change the wildcard character by typing a new
character in the Wildcard character area.

Select one or more of the following in the Search Results area:

 Include only books with search matches
           To list only those selected books that contain search matches in the
           Bookshelf window
 Sort books by search results importance
           To arrange the list of books in the Bookshelf window so that the
           book that contains the best search match is listed first.

 Use the following pushbuttons:

 Retrieve
           To display the search words and phrases for the last 10 bookshelf
           searches, starting with the most recent search.
 Word check
           To display a list of words in the bookshelf search index that are
           spelled similarly to the word selected in the Search words and
           phrases area.
 Search
           To search for the specified words or phrases using the current
           search wildcard, and display the specified search results.
 Cancel
           To return to the previous window without searching for a word or
           phrase.
 Help
           To display contextual help for the selected choice. To display
           extended help for the Search Bookshelf window, use the Tab key to
           move the cursor to the pushbuttons and the right arrow key to move
           to the Help pushbutton. Then click on the Help pushbutton or press
           Enter.

 The Search Bookshelf window is displayed when you click on Search bookshelf on
 the Search pull-down in the Bookshelf window, or move the cursor to it and
 press Enter.

 Some of the books with search matches may not be on your system and cannot be
 opened. However, the search results may help you decide which books to obtain.

 Search bookshelf searches all of the books that you have selected in the
 current list.

 If no book is selected, Search bookshelf searches all of the books in the
 current list.

 The current bookshelf list may not contain all of the books in the bookshelf,
 depending on how you have changed the view. If you want to search the entire
 bookshelf, select All on the View pull-down, then select Select all on the
 Group pull-down.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 296. Search Words and Phrases ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type each word or phrase to be searched for on a separate line in the Search
Bookshelf window. Move the cursor to the end of the line and press Enter to
move to the next line.

All of the words and phrases that you enter in the Search words and phrases
area are searched for. You can scroll or page through the list of search words
and phrases.

If you enter several search words on a single line, BookManager looks for all
of the words in that phrase. If you enter several search words on separate
lines, BookManager looks for a match to any of the words.

The maximum length of each word is 60 characters. The maximum number of
characters in the entry area is 255, including an end-of-line character for
each separate search word or phrase. Long phrases extend beyond the input area
and can be scrolled or paged through in either direction.

You can press Shift+Ins to insert text from the OS/2 clipboard into the Search
words and phrases area. See your OS/2 documentation for more information on the
clipboard.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 297. Wildcard Character ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Wildcard character in the Search Bookshelf window to specify the wildcard
character used to substitute for unknown characters or words in a search. Type
the wildcard character as part of your search word or phrase wherever you are
uncertain about a character or word for which you want to search.

The initial value for the wildcard character is an asterisk (*). You can change
the value in the Wildcard character area if the words or phrases you are
searching for already contain an asterisk as part of the search text.

Use a character that is not likely to be found in the bookshelf. If you use a
character that you may want to find as part of a search, your search results
will be inaccurate.

When you change the wildcard character, it remains changed on each subsequent
Search Book, Search Selected Topic, and Search Bookshelf window.

Example:

You set the wildcard character to #. If you search for the phrase terminal 1#,
your search results include every phrase that begins with terminal 1 (for
example, terminal 12 or terminal 153).

Use Search Results: Include only books with search matches in the Search
Bookshelf window to list the selected books that contain search matches in the

Use Search Results: Sort books by search results importance in the Search
Bookshelf window to list the selected books in the Bookshelf window by the
importance of the search match. Importance is determined by the location,
frequency, and exactness of the matches.

The book with the best search match is listed first. Any books without search
matches are listed at the end of the bookshelf.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 300. Retrieve ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Retrieve in the Search Bookshelf window to display the preceding set of
search words and phrases in the Search words and phrases area. You can use the
retrieved search words and phrases as if you typed them in, or you can add to
them or change them.

Retrieve can be repeated to display the search words and phrases for the last
10 bookshelf searches.

Retrieve is unavailable if there is no previous bookshelf search.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 301. Word Check ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Word check in the Search Bookshelf window to display the Word Check window.

You can use this window to display a list of words in the bookshelf search
index that are spelled similarly to the word selected in the Search words and
phrases area. This allows you to verify the spelling or replace an incorrect
word before you begin a search.

You can select a word from the list to replace the original word.

Word check is unavailable if there are no entries in the Search words and
phrases area, or if the books selected in the Bookshelf window are not included
in the bookshelf search index.

If you have selected some books that are in the search index and others that
are not, only words in the indexed books will be displayed in the Word Check
window.

Use Search in the Search Bookshelf window to begin your search of the selected
books after you type your search words and phrases and specify the books that
you want listed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 303. Search Wildcard Character ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A wildcard character is used to substitute for unknown or unspecified
characters or words in a word or phrase. The unspecified characters can include
letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and spaces.

A wildcard character that is used in a word to substitute for unknown
characters must be the last character in the word. A wildcard character that is
used in a phrase to substitute for an unknown word or words can be placed after
any word in the phrase.

The initial value for the wildcard character is an asterisk (*). You can change
the search wildcard character on the Search Bookshelf, Search Book, or the
Search Selected Topic window. If you change it, the new wildcard character
remains in effect on each subsequent Search Bookshelf, Search Book, and Search
Selected Topic window.

Type the wildcard character in your search word or phrase wherever you are
uncertain about a character or word you want to search for.

Example:

You want to search for all references in a bookshelf to IBM programs. Type IBM
* programs in the Search Bookshelf window to include IBM system programs and
IBM computer programs.

You typed in a book name that cannot be found. You can open the Books and

The file name that you entered on the command line opened a bookshelf. You

path name are correct, and that the bookshelf is in BookManager format.

You tried to open a bookshelf that cannot be opened. The bookshelf may reside
in a directory other than the directories in the books and bookshelves path, it
may be in the wrong format, or it may be corrupted.

Action:

Make sure that the bookshelf file name and the path name are correct, that it
is in BookManager format, and that it is in the books and bookshelves path.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 309. Message 084 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

There is a syntax error in the command line that may be caused by too many
parameters. The error has been ignored.

You specified a command with a syntax error. You may have typed too many
parameters. The Books and Bookshelves window, Bookshelf window, or Book window
that you specified is still opened.

Action:

Use the BookManager windows to complete the actions you specified on the
command line.

The name contains an invalid character or a character following the wildcard
character. Do not type a file extension.

You typed a name that contains an invalid character or a character following
the wildcard character. Do not use a file extension or a period.

Action:

Make sure all of your characters are valid for an OS/2 file name. Make sure
that the wildcard character is the last character in the name. Do not type a
period or other illegal character. A file extension is not accepted in this
area.

The path does not exist. Make sure that you typed the path correctly.

The path you typed was not found and will not be created.

Action:

Make sure that you typed the path name correctly and that the path string is a

           To return to the Search Bookshelf window without replacing a word in
           the Search words and phrases area.
