Astrolog is a classic when it comes to astrology software, not only is
it 100 percent open source software, but it is also the most complete,
and most flexible astrology calculation program ever made freely
available. Personally I know of no better astrological calculation
software than Astrolog.
Thanks to the original author Walter D. Pullen Astrolog is already
available on multiple platforms, including DOS, Windows, Mac and Unix.
The fact that Astrolog is open source software has also made this
independent port to OS/2 possible.
Astrolog for OS/2
-----------------
This port of Astrolog for windows to 32-bit OS/2 compares to the
windows version as follows. A plus sign in front of an item indicates
functionality not in the original but in Astrolog for OS/2. A minus
sign precedes original functionality not found in this release.
- Printing
- Arabic parts*
- Biorythm*
- Basic interpretations*
- Windows bitmap save*
+ Longer filenames can be used.
+ Time and dates in the ISO format, this is the default (the old
format can be selected through a settings dialog).
+ Time zone automatically picked up if the environment variable TZ
has been set in config.sys, to test select the "Now" push button
in the chart dialog or press ctrl+z.
+ Clear UT based time zone designations. Also no need for any
separate and confusing "daylight saving" setting.
+ Summary in the sidebar for graphics charts presenting weighted
element and mode counts. This currently includes houses as well as
signs. In the future aspects will probably also be included.
+ Chart files can be associated with the Astrolog executable.
+ Preserving size and position of main window between runs.
+ Copying of select text to the clipboard.
+ OS/2 bitmap save.
+ Easy switching between four chart buffers. The contents of these
buffers is automatically preserved between runs. This includes
current file name (if there is any). Also loads filename when
opening a chart by double-clicking on it.
+ Adjustment of aspect lines to chosen orb (instead of a fixed 2
degrees).
+ Jyotish houses.
+ Dwads.
+ Extended user customization.
The following will be added or improved along the road towards v1.0:
* Graphics support for all letters in the OS/2 default code page
* Graphics charts optimized for OS/2 (much cleaner code and probably
also faster redraw as well as better appearance)
* Printing
* OS/2 meta file (picture) save
* Swiss Ephemeris
Finally, the fact that this program is free doesn't mean it should
lack any important features or have any persistent bugs. In other
words I'd like this version for OS/2 to work well, so if it doesn't
don't hestitate the slightest to tell me about it.

Astrolog for OS/2 system requirements
-------------------------------------
Any system running Warp 4.
The source code for this version was compiled and linked using
Watcom C 10.6, Warp 4 libraries and the resource compiler found in
the Warp 4 toolkit.
Where to get Astrolog for OS/2
------------------------------
This independent port of Astrolog to OS/2 is archived at the
public OS/2 shareware and open source software archive Hobbes:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu
In case you can't reach Hobbes, or you want the latest info on
Astrolog for OS/2 you can visit the Astrolog for OS/2 home page:
http://hem.fyristorg.com/sol/astrolog/astrolog.html
Here you will not only find the binaries for this version, but
eventually also the complete source for everything included in
the end user package.
The Astrolog Homepage (The Original)
------------------------------------
Ephemeris and general info about Astrolog as well as links to
related sites can be found at the Astrolog homepage:
http://www.astrolog.org/astrolog.htm
Here you will also be able to find the original source for
Astrolog as well as binaries for Windows.
Ephemeris
---------
Ephemeris files are not required but provide more accurate positions.
The anonymous FTP site ftp.magitech.com (or magitech.tcastle.is.net),
maintained by J.H. Trott has all ephemeris files available in the
subdirectory /pub/astrology/astrolog/ephem.
The files are in groups with xx being a number indicating the time
period covered. The three files LRZ5_24, CHI_24, and CPJV_24 cover the
current and 21st centuries. Copies of these files are already in the
end user package.
