  8. review of the excellent A1200
  9. Graphics card, the Blizzard Vision,
  10. you will have concluded (hopefully!)
  11. that I am very happy with the card.
  12. However, nothing is ever perfect.
  13. Since there is no pass through for
  14. Amiga custom screenmodes, If you want
  15. to watch demos or read Eurochart
  16. there were two options. The first was
  17. to keep swapping the monitors between
  18. AGA and B-Vision and the second is to
  19. have two displays.  The first option
  20. is likely to take its toll on your
  21. patience and your hardware very
  22. quickly. The Second is easier but
  23. somewhat inconvenient. Having two
  24. monitors attached to the Amiga,
  25. especially when my Pointless
  26. Contraption shares the same desk
  27. space, resulted in a desk with no
  28. room for anything else.

  30. Fortunately there is a solution, the
  31. boffins at UK hardware company
  32. Eyetech have devised a monitor switch
  33. specially designed for the B-vision,
  34. and B-Mon, for it is this product, is
  35. the elegant option number three.

  41. The B-Mon consists of a small plastic
  42. box of trickery with two monitor
  43. inputs on one side, and one standard
  44. VGA connector and a red LED on the
  45. other. On the left connector a lead
  46. will probably already have been
  47. attached depending on what
  48. scandoubler you use, Eyetech build
  49. the units themselves and so can
  50. customise them to suit each customer,
  51. so any flicker fixer/scan doubler
  52. will be compatible. The B-Vision
  53. connector will attach to the other
  54. monitor input once unclipped from its
  55. PCB. This does mean you loose the
  56. shutter glasses output socket but
  57. quite frankly I cannot envisage
  58. anybody wanting to use this anyway.
  59. At the end of another thin length of
  60. cable sits a switch mounted on a
  61. tower face panel, the kind that
  62. covers a 5.25 inch drive bay. If you
  63. have none of these bays left you may
  64. well be in trouble, but the switch is
  65. small and if you ask Eyetech nicely
  66. they may be able to make you a 3.5
  67. inch B-Mon.

  69. »CL9:Power Problems

  71. »CL0:It is now that the device became a
  72. little problematic. The instructions
  73. for the installation are somewhat
  74. Spartan to say the least. The
  75. documentation that came with my B-Mon
  76. stated that there should be a power
  77. connector to supply the device with 5
  78. volts to power the LED and switching
  79. mechanism, this cable was absent and
  80. the B-mon won't function without it.
  81. A phone call to Eyetech later and it
  82. transpires that a power connector
  83. from a LED on the front of the tower
  84. could be connected and used to power
  85. the device. After searching and
  86. unscrewing my tower in places that
  87. were really not meant to be unscrewed
  88. I rang back to Eyetech, who had by
  89. then realised that the power tower
  90. does not have the right power
  91. connector, and promptly sent the
  92. correct one as mentioned in the
  93. installation instructions. Problem
  94. solved, or so I thought. Thanks again
  95. to general stupidity on my behalf and
  96. poor instructions on the
  97. manufacturers, I connected the power
  98. lead incorrectly. The resulting
  99. explosion managed to take out half of
  100. my house. Actually that's a lie, but
  101. the cable did melt and damage the
  102. switching mechanism. The B-Mon made
  103. its way back to Eyetech, who were
  104. very prompt and repaired the unit
  105. without any further fuss. If you have
  106. a Power Tower do not forget to order
  107. this extra connector when ordering
  108. your B-Mon.

  121. »CL9:I Was Blind, Now I see

  123. »CL0:So finally after a few setbacks the
  124. B-Mon was installed and running. In
  125. operation switching is instantaneous
  126. and since no software or patches are
  127. involved is 100% compatible with all
  128. software. Cybergraphics screens are
  129. unaffected and look as crisp and
  130. clear at they always did. AGA
  131. screenmodes, unfortunately, suffer
  132. from periodic distortion. The exact
  133. reason why this occurs is not clear,
  134. but the prime suspect is interference
  135. from the A1200`s Motherboard. Where
  136. the B-Vision connecting cable is very
  137. well insulated the AGA connecting
  138. cable supplied by Eyetech is not. I
  139. tried taking the cable out and
  140. wrapping it in insulating tape to
  141. cure the problem, this seems to have
  142. helped but not cured it completely.
  143. The interference does not occur often
  144. and is thankfully brief. Otherwise
  145. the whole thing worked perfectly.

  147. The B-Mon is by no means perfect, it
  148. suffers from poor documentation and
  149. the interference problem on the AGA
  150. screenmodes is almost unforgivable
  151. considering the £40 plus post and
  152. package price point and the long
  153. waiting list you have to join to wait
  154. for your unit to be custom made.
  155. However considering the two
  156. alternative methods of getting the
  157. entire range of screenmodes on your
  158. beefed up Amiga there really is no
  159. alternative. Get the B-Mon and get
  160. swiched on today.

  170. appears that the flickering AGA
  171. acreens are not a common problem in
  172. the B-Mon, if this is the case then
  173. the mark really should be higher,
