Subject: The Science Museum at Acorn World '93 (Acorn Press Release)
Date: 17 Sep 93 16:00:29 GMT
The Science Museum Joins the Party at Acorn World '93
Release Date 17th September 1993
The Science Museum, a long term Acorn partner, will have a high
profile at Acorn World '93. As well as providing consultancy and
advice on the exhibits in the Acorn Gallery, the Museum has taken a
stand and will be giving one of the presentations in the theatre
programme.
The Science Museum's stand will be used to demonstrate how Acorn
computers are used to provide interactive information to visitors
throughout the museum. The Science Museum has been a customer of
Acorn's for 10 years and, today, over 90% of its computer-based
exhibits run on Acorn platforms. A recent example is the Museum's
'Science Box' exhibition on DNA finger printing - one of a series of
exhibitions on contemporary science issues. Visitors were invited to
enter information via a touchscreen into an Acorn Computer.
Information is then fed back to them on the number of other people
who have used this exhibit that share the same characteristics.
Apart from the Science Museum, there are many other companies
demonstrating their interactive technology on Acorn computers at the
show.
Longman Logotron will be demonstrating Talking PenDown, its word
processor which can speak letters, words and sentences as they are
typed in. Immediate speech feedback allows children to see and hear
their text simultaneously and correct their mistakes as they type.
(As well as launching a new version of its RISC OS relational
database, S-Base 2, Longman will also be demonstrating the powerful
Eureka 2 spreadsheet and PinPoint 2, its data handling application.)
Wyddfa Software, which produces educational software for young
children and those with special educational needs, will be
demonstrating its latest product, Talking Stories. This interactive
system encourages children to learn to read and write by generating
stories. The text of the story appears on screen with various words
missing. The next page of the story is not displayed until the
children select the correct words to fill the spaces. Wyddfa's
established Talking Pictures and The Spoken Word will also be on
display.
With the theme of 'Vision for the Future', Acorn World is set to be
the largest ever showcase for Acorn products and services worldwide.
Taking place at Wembley from 29-31 October 1993, the exhibition will
have a futuristic theme and includes a series of dedicated feature
areas. These will offer a glimpse of technological innovation in the
education, publishing, professional services and home business
sectors.
A high level theatre programme will accompany the exhibition, at which
industry experts will give their views on a range of business and
technical, educational and leisure topics.
