  5. Acorn introduces Universal Networking

  7. Acorn Computers has announced the first new products to be
  8. launched under its open networking strategy,  Acorn
  9. Universal Networking (AUN).
  10.  
  11. AUN provides a framework for the introduction of, and access
  12. to, new networking technologies in new or existing Acorn
  13. sites.  By incorporating the relevant technologies, industry
  14. standards such as TCP/IP and the concepts of Open Systems,
  15. AUN enables different computer types to be interconnected.

  17. AUN supports different cabling systems and a key feature of
  18. AUN is that users can connect different networks in the site
  19. together via RISC OS computers running an AUN software
  20. application. This allows every computer on site to see every
  21. other computer, even when they are not connected to the same
  22. physical network.

  24. An Acorn Universal Network can consist of a number of Econet
  25. and Ethernet networks linked together via a backbone
  26. Ethernet network using RISC OS computers as Gateway
  27. stations. These computers can act at the same time as local
  28. fileservers.  In this way AUN gives users the benefit of
  29. being able to take a site-wide approach to networking and by
  30. extension their IT resources.

  32. A new release of Acorn's Level 4 Fileserver networking
  33. applications has been optimised for Ethernet support. This
  34. new product gives users the benefits of significant
  35. increased speed performance and an industry standard cabling
  36. system, albeit that existing networks can be left intact
  37. with faster cabling systems added to form a single
  38. integrated network.

  40. For example, users of Acorn's proprietary Econet network may
  41. now extend their system by adding new cabling technologies
  42. such as Ethernet, while ensuring that users can still use
  43. established Econet methods of accessing network resources.

  45. A parallel Acorn software product called TCP/IP Protocol
  46. Suite enables a RISC OS computer to talk to a UNIX computer
  47. over AUN.  This is likely to be of particular benefit to
  48. higher education where TCP/IP and Ethernet networks are
  49. commonplace.

  51. Acorn's Marketing Director, Mike O'Riordan stressed the cost
  52. effectiveness of Acorn's Universal Networking package. "AUN
  53. protects existing user investments due to its compatibility
  54. with existing networks and its future proofing for tomorrow. 
  55. All of this adds up to a cost effective and efficient
  56. network offering which is ideal for schools, universities
  57. and businesses."

  60. networks in planned stages according to their resources and
  61. requirements." he added.

  63. The Acorn Universal Networking product pack which contains
  64. site software and a new release of Level 4 FileServer costs
  65. #399 ex VAT.

  67. In addition, the AUN interfaces are clearly defined
  68. allowing third party products to be incorporated into an
  69. overall AUN strategy.  This ensures compatibility and
  70. coexistence between products from different manufacturers.
