  5. Acorn launches new A4000 
  6.  
  7. Acorn Computers is launching a new mid-range computer which
  8. bridges the gap between the newly expanded A3000 and A5000
  9. ranges (see separate news releases).

  11. Driven by the new ARM250 chip, purpose designed for Acorn by
  12. Advanced Risc Machines Ltd, and running at 12MHz, the new
  13. A4000 delivers 6 MIPS performance - which is 1.4 times
  14. faster than a 33MHz 386DX.

  16. The A4000 has 2MB of RAM expandable to 4MB on the circuit
  17. board; VGA graphic support comes as standard, as do the wide
  18. range of Acorn screen modes. There is a 2MB floppy disc
  19. drive which, with RISC OS 3,  can automatically detect and
  20. use Acorn and PC discs. Another major feature of this three
  21. box solution is the newly restyled keyboard.

  23. The A4000, with its industry standard 80 MB IDE hard disc,
  24. is housed in a slimline case which complements the A5000's
  25. styling. It has internal support for both Econet and
  26. Ethernet without compromising the main expansion slot.

  28. Although the A4000 can be bought on its own, it is also
  29. available as part of a new "Home Office" system.  This pack
  30. is targeted at the sophisticated professional user who wants
  31. more than just a PC. It contains an A4000 system including a
  32. monitor, an advanced wordprocessor (EasiWriter II) and
  33. Desktop Database (together with a disc of templates).  For
  34. those new to the Acorn RISC OS desktop interface, there is
  35. an audio training tape; there are also blank discs included,
  36. together with a full product directory of applications
  37. written to run on Acorn's range of 32-bit RISC computers.

  39. The A4000 Home Office pack, which includes a CGA monitor,
  40. costs #999 ex VAT. Educational institutions can also buy the
  41. A4000 without a monitor for #899.
